Comic-Con is underway in San Diego, and a new photo snapped on the show floor (via SFFGazette.com) reveals our first official look at the three lead characters in Disney+'s Percy Jackson and the Olympians

While we've already seen the trio in some behind-the-scenes snaps, this is the first time Aryan Simhadri's Grover, Walker Scobell's Percy Jackson, and Leah Jeffries' Annabeth have been shown in character.

Unfortunately, this still doesn't reveal any more than what they'll be wearing, though we're sure this sneak peek will make fans of Rick Riordan's books happy. The movies were widely considered a disappointment, and the hope now is this small screen adaptation will do right by Percy and his friends.

Shooting on season 1 wrapped up long before the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, meaning Percy Jackson and the Olympians is now in post-production. We're getting a total of eight episodes adapting the events of The Lightning Thief, and it's possible more from the series will be revealed over the next couple of days.

Riordan has previously revealed that there have already been season 2 discussions, though cautioned at the time it hasn't been officially green-lit...yet. If it ever reached the writing stage, we'd assume work has now ground to a halt seeing as the WGA is also striking.

Based on Disney Hyperion's best-selling book series, the series tells the fantastical story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who's just coming to terms with his newfound divine powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt.

With help from his friends Grover and Annabeth, Percy must embark on an adventure of a lifetime to find it and restore order to Olympus.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians also stars Aryan Simhadri, Leah Sava Jeffries, Jason Mantzoukas, Megan Mullally, Virginia Kull, Glynn Turman, Timm Sharp, Olivea Morton, Dior Goodjohn, Charlie Bushnell, and WWE Superstar Edge.

The series is still expected to premiere on Disney+ sometime in 2024.

@AmazingFILMporg - It’s a story based on Greek Mythology. The author has many series that feature different cultures mythologies and there would have been lots of opportunities for diversity when featuring the right contexts. What’s the chance that the Kane Chronicles, with is Egyptian based, will feature a caucasian lead?

I enjoyed the other Percy Jackson movies but not so sure about a series.

@slickrickdesigns - the movies were garbage. Books series like this I think are better suited for a show rather than movies.

@tBHzHomer - that’s ok. I enjoyed the films. Those aren’t my kind of books to read. I’m more of a where’s Waldo kinda guy.

We know this won't get past a Season 2 at most, so what's the point? It won't adapt past the point the movies reached. It's adapting material we've already seen with a less accurate cast than the previous time.

One of the primary reasons for the movies being rejected by fans was straying from the source material, now it's not just Grover but Annabeth that have been race swapped. It's just repeating the same mistakes.

@Scarilian - How is it a less accurate cast? They're actually kids this time, like the books, and the author is literally an executive producer on the show who had final say on the casting and creative direction. This show is MUCH more closely adhering to the source material than the movies, by a long shot.

@DarkModeDan -
The author, Rick Riordan, who is an executive producer on the series called fans bullies and racists for wanting the characters to appear as he wrote them. He can go [frick] himself. Actively attacking the fans for making a virtue signalling change that he acknowledges goes against what he wrote. What a bastard.

DarkModeDan - 7/25/2023, 12:27 PM
@Scarilian - The author called those self-described "fans" bullies and racists because they bullied a 12-year girl over her race. He was objectively right. Why are you even trying to defend the piss-awful behavior of those so-called "fans" here instead of the kid getting harassed? Doubt that's a hill worth dying on.

And you didn't answer my question, how is it a less accurate cast? Is Rick Riordan not the author and executive producer? Is it not his story and his characters? Is he not allowed to adapt them whatever way he wants? How can this casting be "less accurate" if the creator himself sees a performance and says "yep, that perfectly embodies the essence of my character, hire her." Do you have any reason other than the kid's skin color?

I answered your question before you even responded. I stated clearly my viewpoint that the race swap was against the characters iconography. You are purposefully ignoring the fact he knew the race swap would cause issue, that the departures from the original was what caused the original movies to flop. Now they are repeating the same mistakes as the previous movies and expecting a different result. The only reason they race swapped Annabeth this time around is because they already race swapped Grover in the previous films and wanted to generate new discussion.

Give it another 5-10 years with the same ideology in media and they'll race swap Percy because it'll be something new to attract interest to a book series that most people have accepted by this point will never be adapted with respect to the source material, it'll always be someone changing something - even if that's the author pulling a J.K.Rowling and race swapping a character to appeal to a new demographic or generate discussion.

They actively chose to hire the actress, despite them not fitting what fans desired, knowing the actress would get a ton of hatred. They actively set her up to get the hate because they know in current day it generates marketing, it's what is known as fan baiting:

• Individuals such as yourself will defend the change because to you the iconography of the character is not important, just the writing.

• Individuals such as me will feel that it's a departure from the source material because the iconography of a character is something that is important, alongside the writing.

All the while, those involved will stir the pot usually by directing hatred towards individuals who are not supportive of the change. They need the controversy and hate because at the moment they've shown nothing else of the show that would entice them and controversy generates discussion which generates social media interactions and they are adapting material that has already been adapted so without it, would anyone really care about this series at all?

Without the race swap, neither I or yourself would be discussing this.

Not a single person in this entire thread has mentioned actively looking forward to this show:

• slickrickdesigns is not sure about the new series
• GhostDog expresses enjoying the books but doesn't even comment on the series
• micvalpro and TheNewYorker both dislike the look of the cast
• Malatrovaa is trolling, as per usual
• Myself and Marvel72 are expressing disappointment over the lack of accuracy due primarily to race swapping

Remove the race swap casting and you lose ALL these comments except for maybe Ghostdog and slickrickdesigns - one praising the books but not remarking on the series, the other unsure how to feel about the series because they liked the movies but did not like the books.

@Scarilian - Bruh, do you even realize what you're admitting here?

You do realize that by saying "he knew the race swap would cause issue," and "they actively chose to hire the actress, despite them not fitting what fans desired, knowing the actress would get a ton of hatred," you're admitting you EXPECTED the “fans” to act racist and bully a child!

Why were you pretending before that Rick Riordan wasn’t justified in calling those sorts of asshole “fans” what they are - bullies and racists - if you yourself are saying you EXPECTED them to behave like that!

Don't you think that’s kind of messed up? That it’s just kind of expected that some kid will get a shit-ton of harassment online because of her skin color? And that you think it’s somehow the producers fault, and NOT the fault of the people actually harassing a literal child?

“The only reason they race swapped Annabeth this time around is because they already race swapped Grover in the previous films and wanted to generate new discussion.” Nothing but empty speculation. You have no way of knowing this unless you’re literally a producer on the show.

And do you know how you could break your alleged “fan-baiting” conspiracy theory? Just don’t [frick]ing harrass the actors or whine about their race. It’s so simple.

Based on how you describe it, if you and other “fans” just didn’t start malding about about the casting of a black actor in the first place, then by your logic, there would be no discussion right now, the marketing would fail, and the producers and studios would eventually have to stop doing it.

By your own logic, YOU are the reason this is happening, and by your own logic, the only way to “make it stop” is for you to not participate.

For the record, I think your logic is flawed…but if following it to its natural conclusion means you stop whining about “the non-whites” anytime there’s a new casting decision you personally don’t like…yeah, I could get behind that.

And no, you didn’t answer my question. What does “against the characters iconography” even mean? Define “iconography”, and what exactly about Annabeth’s “iconography” is intrinsically tied to her race. Do you think you know Annabeth better than Riordan? The CREATOR of this character saw the acting performance of this kid and said, “yep, she perfectly embodies my vision for MY character, and is the best fit for this adaptation.” What exactly do you know better than the character’s literal creator?

The studios desired backlash. 'Good news' or 'the expected' results in people losing interest because it does not provoke a strong emotional response. If this was a 1-to-1 adaptation with zero variation then they wouldn't have any shocking headlines to report on. You and I would be unlikely to comment with anything more than 'looking forward to this'.

"What does “against the characters iconography” even mean? Define “iconography”, and what exactly about Annabeth’s “iconography” is intrinsically tied to her race."

Her character is written, described and stated as being a certain way in the books - these aspects define who the character is. Stories take on entirely different meanings when you swap aspects of the character because those aspects are part of what defines them.

Over time you develop a brand image around these characters, this aspect is iconic and used to sell merchandise and familiarize people more with your character, most people can draw Spider-man from memory because the iconography of the suit has been ingrained with them for decades.

"What exactly do you know better than the character’s literal creator?"

I think he's an author of a franchise that had a lot of attention and since getting backlash for a declining quality in his later work, he's decided to double down on the controversial decisions that got him attention previously. The writer's political and social views have also notably changed from a viewpoint of adapting Greek material to the idea of restructuring his work to reflect a modern day diverse audience even if that means sacrificing a large aspect of his narrative framework.

Fans of the books still remark on the decline in writing quality as the books progressed and he does not really have a leverage given the prior film adaptations both flopped.
