THE HOBBIT: Better Look At Mikael Persbrandt As Beorn

From Lord of the Rings to The Hobbit, director Peter Jackson ("The Lovely Bones") has taken quite a few liberties adapting J.R.R. Tolkien's work. Has he gone too far with fan-favorite shapeshifter, Beorn (Mikael Persbrandt)? Come check it out!

Beorn was of immense size and strength for a man, and retained his size and strength in bear-form. He had black hair (in either form) and a thick black beard and broad shoulders (in human form). While not a "giant" outright, Beorn's human form was of such great size. - J.R.R. Tolkien

The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

Once thing I've noticed with the Hobbit is that the wigs and the fake beards (and the make up for that matter) just look off. The hair in the Beorn pic does not look good at all. Reminds me of hair used for stage productions.

"Has Peter Jackson gone too far?"

Oh man, his hair's brown, and they didn't CGI his muscles. He totally ruined the whole book.

Man it's like the first Iron Man all over again. I mean, Obadiah Stane had a beard! What were they thinking? They ruined everything!

I rather enjoyed the first one and shall explain why

1. 'The Hobbit' takes place before TLotR; in a time before the darkness of Sauron had fully returned to the lands of Middle-Earth...sooooo the reason it's more campy looks cheesy and all that jazz is because he's trying to convey an innocence that was prevalent throughout the book.

2. The overall feel of the book (to me at least) was beautifully captured in the first film so I have faith he will carry on the same path in the next. Granted he is taking some liberties but fanboys this is a different medium of entertainment...he can do that!! :B

3. I believe by the third film there will be a darker tone because

The Hobbit is one of my favourite books of all time, but I have no intention of watching Jackson's take on it. I am way too fond of the story.

I was expecting someone huskier and with a beard, kind of like guys who train bears. But I think this Beastmaster guy should be funny. It's a comedy, right?

He looks more like a were-wolf than anything. But I guess I've accepted that this is Peter Jackson's flawed version of Middle-earth, not Tolkien's.

The problem with the Hobbit is that all the character's hair looks like they were done in a salon. Seriously, look back at the first official photos of the Dwarves, then compare that to any of the charcters in the LOTR trilogy. LOTR looked gritty, realistic, and the Hobbit looks like everything was done on a perfectly manicured set.

No offense Gusto, but the piss-poor CGI, the childish action, the physics-defying stunts, the terrible characters...all of that is why the LOTR will always be ten times better than the Hobbit.

Holy shit, that trailer was amazing! Cool pics of Beorn, truly, but that trailer reinvigorated my excitement and anticipation for Parts 2 & 3. Much needed, good sir.

I knew I'd get shit for mentioning DnD. Yes, I'm a virgin. I'm also underage. I'm not a religious player. I play every now and then and we tend to drink alcohol during sessions. We rarely play it properly and end up taking the piss.

That meme is hilarious though 'cause it looks EXACTLY like my GM..

I'll reserve my judgement til after I see the movie (Crazy, I know, but I'm weird like that...), but it does seem to me that while this Swedish guy may be a great actor - I have no idea - this was a missed opportunity to cast an actor with brown skin for once in Middle Earth as someone besides an orc or other evil character. I could definitely see a burly Maori actor as Beorn. Especially considering the PC squad complaints about the films' lack of diversity. At least they didn't make black as he's described in the books. (Which makes no sense; things that live in perpetual dark loss pigment.)
