A new Flash Gordon movie is in the works and two of today's most-wanted actors' names are being tossed around for the lead role!

Okay, okay, I like actors Ryan Reynolds and Sam Worthington just as much as the average CBM fan. You would think they are the only two actors in Hollywood with how often their names are tossed around for genre film roles. Reynolds did justice to the poorly-written role of Wade Wilson/Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and he will (hopefully) make a great Hal Jordan in Green Lantern. Worthington stole the spotlight in Terminator: Salvation and impressed in Avatar, but he's already got Clash of the Titans on the way and may also appear in a remake of Mad Max. Now there's this rumor...

According to HollyScoop, both actors are in the running to play Flash Gordon in a new live-action adaptation of the classic comic strips:


"Right now it’s between Sam, Ryan Reynolds and one or two others for the lead role should the project actually get off the ground.

"If [Worthington] gets the role it would be quite a big deal as Flash is an all-American hero."



Do either one of them really need to star in more comic book/sci-fi films? What do you think, CBM fans?









UPDATE: Harry Knowles of AICN claims to have received the following email from Sam Worthington regarding the Flash Gordon rumor:

Merry Xmas. And they would both do ok in this role but I agree Brent, there's others out there who could probably do better. Perhaps jensen ackles?.......all kidding aside he would actually ne a better fit for gordon since he's got that young football jock look and attitude. I say jensen ackles.

he blowing? I just don't understand it! He just doesn't have

Ya know Ryan Reynolds I love as Deadpool and am optimistic for Hal. Sam Worthington is an awesome action star but as stated can;t really cover his accent at all. I honestly say Ben Foster for Flash Gordon. I just like him as an actor and think he deserves a headlining character for once.

As long as it is not Ryan Reynolds. I like him as an actor and think he will do great as Green Lantern and Deadpool but do not want every comic book character to be portrayed by him.

No. God no. Ryan Reynolds is great. Sam Worthington is awesome. But no. I'm already tired of their asses, and the fact that their names are getting tossed around so much just means that Hollywood is lazy, unoriginal, and afraid to try anyone else new. Which is stupid. Ugh.

I'm not the most knowledgeable on Flash Gordon, but I'd rather not have Reynolds in this.

I've been saying for a while, pretty much since he was cast as Hal, that he's a great actor and is going to be a great Green Lantern. And he was an awesome Wade Wilson, it's not his fault that Deadpool got character-raped by the script. He took what he had, 5 minutes as a Wade Wilson who had Deadpool's personality, and made the most of it.

I still stand firmly by all that, but I don't want to see him in this. It's just too many characters now. Deadpool, Hannibal King, Green Lantern, and now Flash Gordon? That's too many.

Sam Worthington, on the other hand, I wouldn't mind. I've criticized Sammy a lot these past few months, but Avatar really turned me around. The dude can certainly act. He was funny, likeable, compelling, etc. I would go to see a FG movie starring Worthington. Though I don't know if he's exactly ideal for this part, I wouldn't mind him and I prefer him over Reynolds.

Yeah if Reynolds wasnt Green Lantern than I would want him for Flash so lets see who the other actors are.

Oh and Merry Chrismas Guys,it's my first Year with you Dudes and its been awesome so I hope next year would be even awesomer.

Despite of what some people say I like the 80's treatment for Flash Gordon.It did not try to imitate Star Wars or Star Trek. Its effects are very much outdated but all the casts and production design and style fits perfectly to the source material. It was campy but I enjoyed watching. Back then I thought Timothy Dalton (who played Prince Barrin) would make a perfect Tony Stark and Sam Jones as He-Man.

It would be cool if the next movie version would maintain the same production design and I agree with bizarro, ASHTON KUTCHER would fit as Flash. Reynolds and Worthington are too overly exposed.

The problem with Flash Gordon is..he's [frick]ing shit. At best he's a piss take character that works as a campy distraction(the movie) at worst he's an abysmal waste of time(the tv show)...so, sorry, i hope this doesn't happen at all.

There are other actors out there that can do it you know. If Sam is in there, why isn't Hugh Jackman? I mean come on. I see Sam as Captain America, but that's just me. No more for Ryan, two is enough. Who is he going to play next, The Flash? Come on, geez!

CHRISI FING PINE should have it just made sense. Now im happy Ryan is going to be Hal Jordan I cant wait but if they are seriously considering him for flash to then WB messed up in casting because that should have been FIRST CHOICE. BUT : ] because I want to work for WB some day ill say do whatever you want you are gods..heh...heh. As for Sam I dont see him as flash at all no where near it if anything he's Hawkman Right?!?! Right!!

@DDD who cares man its about acting not about patriotism but I do respect where you are coming from in a sense. As for Ryan Reynolds bro he is CANADIAN so i mean you up set about that to?? Ashton Kutcher...have you guys ever read Flash Gordon? You mine as well cast rosie O'donnel as wonder woman if you think Kutcher is a good choice for Flash.

And Ror, I disagree. The 80's movie was indeed campy, but the comic strip itself is full of awesome scifi pulp stories. It was pretty well written back in the day, and extreemly edgy too for it's time and most importantly not corny or campy. You can't base your opinion on the character from the tv show or the 80's movie, to really know flash gordon you have to read the old comic strips or even the old serials are pretty good.
I mean with out Flash Gordon we wouldn't have had starwars, almost all that is truly great about the original trilogy was directly mined from the old Flash Gordon serials.

If done right a Flash Gordon movie could be amazing.

Not a huge Flash Gordon fan but I think I'd prefer to see Worthington in the role, especially after Avatar! :)

I think I would rather see an up and coming actor that hasn't been doing a bunch of movies in a similar genre, than regurgitating the same few actors every time a comic book/action movie comes out. There has to be some blonde, All-American type out there that would fit. I hope they take their time and not hire the latest and greatest thing out there, but I understand that ticket sales can rely on who is starring. Such is Hollywood.
