BOX OFFICE: G.I. JOE: RETALIATION Surprises! Opens With A Whopping $10.5 million!
Usually moving your opening back by eight months is not a good sign. But in this case, Jon Chu's G.I. Joe: Retaliation hasn't suffered one bit from the delay, as it has hauled in $10.5 million at the box office already. Come see what audiences are grading it.
Summer of 2012, Paramount shocked many when they decided to push back the opening of G.I. Joe: Retaliation to March of 2013. At the time they said the move was necessary so that they could convert the film to 3D. I and many others assumed that the delay would have a negative impact on the film's opening, but it overcame that with a solid two day effort.
It began Wednesday night (midnight showings), with a very pleasant $2.25 million and continued with a strong Thursday that pushed it's two day total to $10.5 million. The news keeps getting better as Deadline reports that the film has been receiving an ‘A-’ CinemaScore from audiences, which by the way trumps the ‘B+’ grade that 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra received. Now, chances of the film topping $50 million this Easter weekend are looking more than likely, which will make Paramount execs breathe easier.
In this sequel, the G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy, Cobra, they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence. The film stars D.J. Cotrona, Byung-hun Lee, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce, RZA, Ray Stevenson, Channing Tatum with Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson. Directed by Jon M. Chu, and produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Brian Goldner, written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick based on Hasbro’s G.I. Joe® characters. March 29th, 2013!
