G.I. Joe Trailer Reviewed

G.I. Joe Trailer Reviewed

The guys over at NukeTheFridge.com (love the domain name) somehow got to see a test trailer for Paramount's G.I. Joe movie, and are taking some heat by posting a negative review.

Review Opinion

Sounds like Paramount has sicced their lawyers on them for this critique, and they're keeping it online anyway. So, read their review and then give them some link love for having giant kahonas.

Here is the original review from NukeTheFridge.com:

I just came from a “test screening” of the first teaser trailer for “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra.” What can I say about it? Well, it was horrible. No, actually it was worse than horrible.

The trailer begins with some jets zooming by and dropping some bombs. Then we see Dennis Quaid as Hawk talking to members of a new elite fighting force he says has been put together to fight terrorism.

We see a couple of terrorist attacks, some G.I. Joe guys dressed like Snake Eyes jumping out of a plane and the Eiffel tower being topped by what looks like some green ooze.

Next we see some quick shots of a number of characters like Scarlett, Channing Tatum’s Duke on a motorcycle, Sienna Miller as the Baroness sliding down a staircase railing, and a quick shot of Snake Eyes and Stormshadow fighting. About the Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow fight…it looks about as bad as a fight from the “Double Dragon” movie from the early 90’s.

Finally we get another quick editing job of some action sequences that go by really too quick to make anything out, and then finally there is this really lame sequence featuring some horrible CG work, as a couple of rockets are launched at some Joes dressed again to look like Snake Eyes. They do this dive / twirl through mid air where they some how avoid the rockets as they swirl by.

The “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra” title appears on screen followed by “Summer 2009.” In all the trailer was about a minute long. I was told they are testing the trailer for debut as a possible Super Bowl commercial.

There was no footage of Destro, Zartan, or Cobra Commander.

My heart has been ripped from my chest.

Even Snake Eyes v. Storm Shadow isn't going to save this movie?

Indeed, it is sad. Because I want this movie to be good...as I want Wolverine to be [BUT NO!..not gonna happen]

...but "Wolverine" is going to be a FLOP. Fox studios always ruins the Marvel character persona. Maybe, they should give their director "SOME FREEDOM" like WB does. Why else would WB movies be so badass. "Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Constantine, and V for Vendetta"....

[frick] FOX!
I hope G I Joe does great. I know its 75% chance it might fail...but honestly...I'm rooting more for this movie then Wolverine.

Some freedom you say? You mean like the freedom that was used to make the Justice League TV show in the 90's? THAT freedom? Oh you didn't see the show, that's because it SUCKED and didn't get past the pilot. You can find it on Youtube.

How about the freedom that gave the Batsuit nipples? Or gave Bats his very own Bat Card "can't leave the cave without it!" That freedom? The freedom that has repeatedly and constantly thrown the S (first and ONLY time I will use that phrase) at every single attempt at a Superman movie? That gave us 6 "Super" movies, all of which reeked, and all of which portrayed Lex Luthor as the freakin' bad guy? Seriously? 3 decades of making movies for a character and you keep putting the SAME bad guy in the movies?

How about the freedom that created Space Jam? Wasn't that spectacular? OH, how about Catwoman? That was a lovely movie, right? Pokemon? Yu-Gi-Oh, Powerpuff Girls, Live Action Scooby-Doo, Wild Wild West, Free Willy, 13 Ghosts? I can go ON AND ON with the awesome freedom that WB gives their directors...Richie Rich, Dennis the Menace (and sequels)...Wow that freedom is sure turning into a giant pile of SHYTE if you ask me. But that's only a dozen of the 1051 movies that WB has in their database. SOOOOOO, I think we're on pretty safe ground saying FOX will do this movie well, i.e. X-Men movies...So, I don't think we're going to have a problem, of course, that's just MY opinion right?

But, just based on what has been seen of the 2 movies involved here (Wolverine and GIJoe) how in the WORLD did you come up with the conclusion that THIS is going to be better than Wolverine? Please tell me.

There's not just some creative licensing going on here, this is a total rewrite of GI Joe history, people, look, EVERYTHING! Yea, they do share the same names as people we know and love, the Baroness is HOT and Ray Park plays Snake Eyes, you DO realize he isn't exaclty an actor, right? That's why he plays parts with very little (or in this case, NO) dialogue. Ooo he's a kickass martial artist, but he can't ACT! So, let's not forget Cobra Cmdr. is oh, about 28 years old, Destro has NO mask (at least not from what we've seen) Roadblock is named Heavy Duty (not ROADBLOCK) and Ripcord is now a black guy played by Marlon Wayans. He's a funny guy, but I haven't seen him do ANYTHING even remotely serious.

Its really a shame this movie will probably suck ass. It has all the potential to be a great trilogy or even more. With so many diffrent characters to chose from it go for 5 or 6 movies. Too bad it will probably be more for kids than adults, which makes no sense since most people who love gi joe are adults now anyway. Im not saying it should be rated R or anything because its not like it was a graphic cartoon. But at least make it realistic and not cheesey. They should stick with the comics and not the cartoon for refrence. The comics were awesome. I'll see it anyway but probably come out of the theater cussin like a sailor and damning the director and producers to burn in hell for eternaty. Oh well... I guess its time to just hope for a bad ass
He-Man movie to relive childhood memories. Damn movie studios thinkin they know what true fans want.

The comics were NEVER children oriented, yes the toys and cartoon obviously were, but the comics, NEVER.

The producers killed this movie the moment they said G.I. Joe will be called G.I.J.O.E., an 'international' crime fighting organization that fights terrorists. HA! What a joke! I hope this movie sucks ass and makes less money than Gigli. Shame on the entire crew that came up with this insult. But hopefully as soon as this movie flops, somebody with some brains (and balls) will redo the script and movie. So in a couple years, I'll be thrilled to see G.I. Joe: The Real AMERICAN Hero!

guys, it sounds like a typical trailer, since when do trailers show you all the cool parts of the movie. they just give you little glimpses here and there. that's why they're called "teaser trailers" they're teasing you w/ the movie's content.

as for the effects shots, it takes time to get those done right, but i'm guessing that this is going to be awesome.

and as for the fight scene between Stormshadow and snake eyes...have ANY of you ever seen a fight being filmed. it looks NOTHING like the finished product.

give it some time, this movie will come around.
SGA
SGA - 12/18/2008, 11:34 PM
also, IonParallax...CALM THE [frick] DOWN!

it's just a god damn movie. even if it does blow, it's not like it's the end of the world.

you'll get over it. as for your list of so called bad movies, some of them were actually decent, space jam for one...it was DEFINITELY a movie geared for little kids, so obviously, depending on your age when it came out, you're not gonna like it. it came out in 96 right? it was targeted for people my age at the time, 7 years old...why'd you waste YOUR time watching it (if in fact you are older)

as for Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh!, those were Japanese originated, so it has no bearing on this subject, it was out WAY before it ever reached the U.S.

and don't give me that shit about how it's not great. Pokemon now sux, but back when it was first introduced to the U.S. it could do no wrong, that's why it is Nintendo's #2 selling franchise in it's history (second only to Mario)

The first superman movie rocked by the way...not the rest, but the first one at least did.

and i have no idea why in the hell you would bring Free Willy into this, it is in no way comic related. sure it might have been a creation of WB, and at the time it was good (for its target audience of people under 12 years old).

and as much as i don't want to, i do have to agree w/ you about all the other movies sucking major ass.

as for Ray Park, who cares about his acting. I for one think it's pretty good. I mean, who else can you think of that could pull off Darth Maul like he did.

sure he only had a few lines, but it's the intimidation that's important. and as for his lines in the movie, that's not his fault. Blame George Lucas for writing the script that way. (yes, i'm not stupid, i know he had his voiced dubbed over for the movie, but you could see that the emotion was there, or as is needed in the case of Darth Maul, the lack thereof)

but what most people don't know is WHO they got for his dubbed voice. It was British comic actor Peter Serafinowicz...a COMIC actor of all people.

it just goes to show that no matter what stereotypes you put someone under, they can pull through and surprise you at any given moment, just like Peter did for Darth Maul (who would have guessed he was a comic actor)

besides Ray has been wanting to get into acting, and he's got to start somewhere.

i think i've ranted long enough....besides, i'm hungry, i'm gonna go make a sandwich or something.

I almost feel obligated to go watch this when it comes out, just because I grew up watching it on tv. But I'm affraid I'm going to leave the theater in tears, and not tears of joy. I don't want to see my third most favorite catoon franchise get castrated like this.

First of all, like SGA said, it's a trailer. And like the article said, a "minute" long at that. Which showed what... a second of the Snake eyes/storm shadow fight? They saw one kick being blocked and based the whole fight sceen on it... well isn't that a well founded critique. And how can "we" go off bitching about a trailer that "we" ourselves haven't even seen yet?

However, in ION's defense (even though he's more than capable of defending himself, i don't give a shit, it's one for all and all for one here!), all he did was "he-bitch-man-slap" that idiot Aiiwolf for making unfounded remarks praising WB/DC over FOX!!! ION took the words right out of my mouth, i was about to boil and morph into "apeshit" mode on his ass!!! That's what "we" "LogicLanternCorps" of the "comicbookmovie.com" universe do best!!! We kick ass where logical reasoning can't be found!

As for his distaste in children's movies, that's his opinion geared towards making the point that DC/WB has produced even more dogshit than FOX. Aiiwolf was talking out of his ass and was lapidated for it. SGA, myself, ION and countless others, we post here regularly with logical reasoning to back our statements and opinions. If you're gonna post something negative in a caveman fashion (meaning without any plausible reasoning), you'll be met with "La Resistance". VIVA LA RESISTANCE!!!

And Aiiwolf, by posting "Fox studios always ruins the Marvel character persona. Maybe, they should give their director "SOME FREEDOM" like WB does. Why else would WB movies be so badass. Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Constantine, and V for Vendetta....", that was as idiotic as saying "they did the Matrix" but not mentionning how much the sequels sucked! What, do you have blinders on or something? You throw at us "Batman Begins and TDK" saying that FOX always "ruins" Marvel characters but you easily forget that we all saw how much crap they made with the previous Batman movies or Superman movies. Hell i never saw this coming one damn bit, someone that'll actually make me "defend" FOX, but all the X-movies, the Daredevil movie and yes even the FF movies had more to offer than those WB movies. WB can't even make a decent "animated" movie for crying out loud!!! Dude, think before you type for the love of Christ! You're talking about a MONUMENTAL company that's waiting on a single director to tell them what they should do next as if he was their freakin' mother!!!

This is one person's take on the trailer. I'm not saying this will be a good film, I pretty much know in my gut that it'll be a crappy G.I.Joe movie, just as I've said before, like Transformers was a bad Transformers movie.

I'm just looking for a decent action film out of this.

That said, my expectations leave little room for disappointment so I'll have to see this trailer for myself and see if it's as bad as they've said.

Not sure, sounds like it is being geared for kids, a military movie geared at kids just makes my mind explode.

I mean sure some terrorists somewhere are planning on covering the eiffel tower in green ooze, that will really scare the living crap out of everyone. I mean if the terrorists attack like that, I can probably kick their asses, hell even Justin Chatwin can probably kick their asses.

It's brainwashing them to join the Navy or something...Like that simpsons episode where Bart, Millhouse, Nelson and Raplhie become a boy band and do "yvan eht nioj", somethin' like that. Which was an awesome episode.

Thank you SHAMAN! I know I always got backup with you man. SGA, I, do, and always will, appreciate your rebuttals as much as SHAMAN's backup. It's interesting and you make for good conversation. Yes, Space-Jam was geared for kids, I was 14 when it came out ok? It still sucked as a movie, as did Free Willy, Wild Wild West, and the various other movies I mentioned. I understand Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon came out in Japan, i'm well aware of that, and I played Pokemon and it was cool. I would actually still play it to this day if I owned it. I'm not downing the game, i'm downing the SHYTETASTIC movie's WB made out of these franchises. Just for the record, Yu-Gi-Oh SUCKS major sweaty ballsack whether it's for little kids or not. I could NEVER see getting into anything even remotely close to Yu-Gi-Oh (Magic the Gathering) because it's LAME. Yes, that's my opinion, so cut it down all you would like. I understand.
As it is my opinion that ALL incarnations of a Superman movie are completely destroying Mr. Kal-El. It's all wishy washy and Lois this and Lex that. Since WHEN didn't you see Superman get into a kickass fight in the comics? NEVER. He's always had some badass villain to contend with, there's always a fight he's got to deal with, whether he beats the living tar of the opponent or not, he fights ALL THE TIME! He doesn't make the illusion of literally ripping the S off his chest and saran wrapping his opponents with it, NO, he hauls off and sucker punches someone. Can I get some heat vision action going on please? That actually does some DAMAGE and not just melting metal together to make some cuffs to aprehend someone. COME ON! He's Superman for god's sake.

Back to the point at hand, I believe the points I made about this movie are well founded in the "this could possibly suck a big fat one" category, I will reitterate;

"There's not just some creative licensing going on here, this is a total rewrite of GI Joe history, people, look, EVERYTHING! Yea, they do share the same names as people we know and love, the Baroness is HOT and Ray Park plays Snake Eyes, you DO realize he isn't exaclty an actor, right? He's a funny guy, but I haven't seen him do ANYTHING even remotely serious."

As for Ray Park, you do realize that you just said it wasn't even HIM who did the voice for Darth Maul right? So, he just looked pissed off and did A cool fight scene for about 6 minutes. That's IT. There wasn't any acting involved. Yea, he's a great stunt guy who can do some amazing moves. He is NOT an actor. That's all.
IonParallax
IonParallax - 12/19/2008, 11:25 AM
Did I forget to mention that Dennis Quaid plays Hawk? Who amazingly looks just like FLINT! Which is who I thought it was for the longest time. But it's not. It's Hawk...It does NOT make sense. I wish they would use the damn "Chewbacca defense" tactic for this movie, so my head could explode violently and then I won't have to see it BOMB as I assume it's going to. Yea, it may be a DECENT action flick, but it won't be GIJoe, it's PG-13, why the hell do they have guns if you're not going to see someone get a bullet through them? This shouldn't be geared towards children and it SHOULD follow the comics, which were extremely intriguing, and full of espionage and kick ass fight scenes, and REAL BULLETS, not some (sound effects) crappy blue and red lasers. Geeeeeeeeeeeeeez. I want to see Roadblock(Heavy Duty) with a 50 Cal tearin' the place apart. But I highly DOUBT that's going to happen, since it is PG-13. Craptastically crappy crap fest o rama.

sunsetcracker - 12/19/2008, 12:43 PM
I think that this movie is going to the 90s batman territory here. The thing about comic movies is that you have to have the right people working on the project. Look at Ironman for exmaple Jon F was a fan of the comic and it turned out to be a really good movie. Zach Snyder has said that he is a fan of the watchmen novel and it looks to be amazing. I think the blame can be past mostly to fox for not hiring the right people to work on the movie. I don't think that directer, writer, producer really understood the source material. This is just another attempt to cash in on a booming market right now.
IonParallax
IonParallax - 12/19/2008, 1:10 PM
Agreed Sunset. Because the 25th Anniversary Joe's are flying off the shelves, they just HAD to make a movie. It's amazing. I understand it started out as a toy line (like Transformers) and they actually did it well adapting a TOY into a comic and then a childrens cartoon. Actually, the comics were, and will always be, awesome. Much better than the cartoon, and DEFINITELY better than any toy they've made, or what this movie is shaping up to be.

Pirates of the dark water was cool, visionaries too, thundercats and silverhawks... don't know, really really hard to do.

Yea, those were some of the coolest toys EVER!!!!!
There were just so damned many of them, and bases and vehicles that the figures actually fit in. It was awesome. Hasbro did an amazing job, and I think, the best thing they've produced to date.

The 25th Anniversary ones are cool, much more articulated, some are badass, and some of them just looked rushed and not at all even cared for.

But the comics are badass. Very adult oriented. The Special Missions (28 total I think) are my favorite, the crown jewel of GI Joe comics.

I think if this was a great movie concept, it would have been done to death already back inthe 1990's.
To review a test run of a trailer that hasn't been released yet or been given a final clearance is just not right though.
I'm sure they are going to have a kickass fight between Snake eyes and Storm Shadow...2 good martial artists and he calls it a fight from Double Dragon? i'm not convinced by that argument.
It won't win Oscars, but it will take in a fortune based on the kids who wil want to see it.

ooo shaman, sign me up for a She-Ra movie anytime, just remove that anoying sidekick (I could never find the darn thing on the show, too focused on She-ra). If they make a thundercats movie who would play snarff? Verne Troyer?

Those were the good times, great action cartoons, now.... the only action cartoon that comes to mind is Ben 10 (and I really don't understand that, why 10? he has like 20 aliens to choose from, it makes my head hurt).

Hell Rainbow Brite could be played by Miley Cirrus and be the biggest grossing film ever. Although I would feel really sorry for the parents of those 10 year olds, first have to sit through Jem 5 times, then sit through Rainbow Brite 8 times.

Sorry Ion, the coolest toys ever are Legos, then the classic transformers, then Gi-joe, then M.A.S.K., then Centurions, then Visionaries, then TMNT.
