Here is the full, official announcement:

IMAX Corporation and Sony Pictures Releasing announced today that The Green Hornet, the highly anticipated adaptation of the radio and television masked superhero character will be released to IMAX theatres, simultaneously with the film's wide domestic 2D and 3D release on January 14, 2011. The film will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience and presented in IMAX 3D.

"We are tremendously excited that The Green Hornet will be released in IMAX 3D as part of our wide release of the film," said Rory Bruer, President, Worldwide Distribution for Sony Pictures Releasing. "When you have a film that has such an imaginative and unique depth, scope, and visual style, you really should experience the film with the outstanding 3D elements that the filmmakers are delivering. We believe The IMAX 3D Experience will offer audiences a truly state of the art cinematic experience."

"Superhero movies typically play very well with IMAX audiences, making the release of The Green Hornet a great way to kick off our 2011 slate," said IMAX Chief Executive Officer Richard L. Gelfond. "We're pleased with the continued expansion of our relationship with Sony Pictures, and we're excited to work with them to reach our growing audience base with another quality film."

"We're excited to welcome Michel Gondry to the list of acclaimed directors who have released films into the IMAX network and we believe his innovative creative vision will play very well in IMAX," added Greg Foster, Chairman and President, Filmed Entertainment. "This film is ideally suited to our fan-boy audience, and in IMAX 3D, they will be transported into the world of The Green Hornet."

The statement also included the following synopsis of the movie which goes into further detail about both the stars and story of the upcoming Green Hornet, the trailer for which is set to debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live on June 21st.

In the film, Britt Reid (Seth Rogen), son and heir to Los Angeles' largest newspaper fortune, is a rich, spoiled playboy who has been happy to maintain a direction-less existence. When his father James Reid (Tom Wilkinson) mysteriously dies, Britt meets an impressive and resourceful company employee, Kato (Jay Chou). They realize that they have the resources to do something worthwhile with their lives and finally step out of James Reid's shadow. Kato builds the ultimate weapon, The Black Beauty, an indestructible car with every weapon and gadget imaginable and Britt decides that in order to be heroes, they will pose as villains. With the help of Britt's new secretary, Lenore Case (Cameron Diaz), they learn that the chief criminal in the city is named Benjamin Chudnofsky (Christoph Waltz). He has united all the gangs under his power, and he quickly sees that the Green Hornet is a direct threat to the prosperous criminal underworld he controls. Directed by Michel Gondry. The screenplay is by Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg, based upon "The Green Hornet" radio series created by George W. Trendle. The film is produced by Neal H. Moritz.

Gawd, I hope this movie turns out well. I've loved the Green Hornet ever since I used to check out audio tapes of the old radio serials from the public library when I was a little kid. Those and the Shadow.

But if the early word of mouth on the movie was already bad, it just got worse with the newsthat Sony has now acknowledged that the studio won't be screening the film ahead of time for critics. It's a tried and true strategy that studios use to prevent bad buzz from spiraling out of control,at least until they've had a chance to squeeze some moola out of opening-weekend audiences who've been gulled into showing up on Friday night by the studio's trailers and TV spots. Still, it's one thing to keep critics away - and another thing to come up with a preposterous excuse for doing so. I guess people in Hollywood just love to tell whoppers, which is the nice way of saying that when things go wrong they come up with explanations that are about as believable as BP's rationale for why its Deepwater Horizon oil spill has been sending as much as 100,000 barrels of crude oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico every day. When a wintertime movie has a lousy opening, you often read quotes from the studio's distribution chief blaming it on an East Coast snowstorm. When an director quits a film two weeks before it was supposed to start shooting, you always hear about "creative differences," when it's really because the filmmaker, after having one too many screaming fights with the star, said "It's him or me."
On another note, does not matter how much technology they put into this movie, the fact remains,Seth Rogen does not have the "Chemistry" to play an edgy and dark vigilante. He has been completely miscast and this mistake has infuriated the thousands of Green Hornet hard-core fans. Michael Weatherly from NCSI would have been a much better choice.

Ranger14 ,yeah I grew up w/ The Green Hornet as well. Seth Rogen is a terrible choice to portray this character. If they were making a movie about "Happy Days" and he were portraying "Potsy",then, I would support that decision. Don't get me wrong,I don't dislike Seth Rogen but that does not change the fact,on my own personal opinion,he does not represent, not even remotely,The Green Hornet. I consider this as an insult to the hard-core fans.

"Highly anticipated"?,I have seen some of the fight scenes in L.A. and his stun double does not even look like Rogen. On close-up shots, on the fight scenes, Rogen's face expression does not carry theintensity of a fight. He basically looks like Seth Rogen (doofus-geek character we are used to seeing in his movies)wearing a Green Mask,no credibility whatsoever.

This is going to be a BOX OFFICE BOMB. I'm sorry but Seth Rogen is no Britt Reid. They could've gotten someone like JENSEN ACKLES to play the Green Hornet. He's more credible than Rogen is to play a super hero...

I know little to nothing about Green Hornet so I'll have to wait until they finally release the trailer until I can judge whether it looks any good. I'm a fan of Seth Rogen but I have to admit that it seems like an odd casting choice though... :P
