2011's The Green Hornet didn't exactly light up the box office, but it didn't bomb either. It ended up grossing $227M at the worldwide box office. That's not too shabby when you compare it against its $120M production budget (excluding marketing costs). That's not bad for a film that was actually made in Los Angeles. If it had filmed in a location that offered a sizable tax rebate, like most films do nowadays its returns would be looked at more favorably.

So, why no sequel? In a 2013 interview with WTF Podcast, Seth Rogen ("The Guild Trip") was quite candid about having a bad experience making the first film and his lack of interest in making a sequel. He described the mere notion of making a sequel as being a "Nightmare." He felt the 2011 film could've been better if they had chosen a director with experience with big-budget action films instead of arthouse director Michel Gondry ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"). And since the film had such a big budget he felt that led to the studio being more hands on than Rogen was used to. He's an actor that enjoys his creative as seen in Superbad, Pineapple Express, 50/50, and This Is The End.

Britt Reid (Seth Rogen), son and heir to Los Angeles' largest newspaper fortune, is a rich, spoiled playboy who has been happy to maintain a direction-less existence. When his father James Reid (Tom Wilkinson) dies, Britt meets an impressive and resourceful company employee, Kato (Jay Chou). They realize that they have the resources to do something worthwhile with their lives and finally step out of James Reid's shadow. Kato builds the ultimate weapon, The Black Beauty, an indestructible car with every weapon imaginable and Britt decides that in order to be heroes, they will pose as villains. With the help of Britt's new secretary, Lenore Case (Cameron Diaz), they learn that the chief criminal in the city is named Benjamin Chudnofsky (Christoph Waltz). He has united all the gangs under his power, and he quickly sees that the Green Hornet is a direct threat to the prosperous criminal underworld he controls.

Cast: Seth Rogen, Cameron Diaz, Christoph Waltz, Tom Wilkinson & Jay Chou Director: Michel Gondry * Screenwriter: Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg

@dannramm113

I agree. Stupid but fun. It was exactly what I wanted and expected from a Seth Rogan comedy.

The first mask would have been AWESOME. The movie was great in my opinion, but I'd like to see a more grounded and serious Hornet film in the future. Also, the Shadow should get a new movie right? Anyone reading Grendel vs. the Shadow?

The movie had so much potential. I applaud the effort.

The comedy is what got me. This is a show about mobsters, if they would have keep a serious tone to the movie it would have been fine.

I hated the original Green Hornet (I only watched for Bruce Lee) soooo.......this film, while not great, was a definite improvement.

Would like to see a serious version possibly set in the past. But if it's in present day, the characters should be updated a bit. I'm not saying they should be turned into gays for the liberals, but their tech and costumes should be improved. Hornet should be able to fight also.

I can definitely see why people liked the movie. I hated it though, but that's 99% because of Seth Rogen. I just can't watch him in anything.

Forgot this movie actually happened.

This film was such an atrocious mess that it deserves to be ignored and forgotten.

Not even the TV series was successful, what made anyone think a full length picture would be?

I liked it a lot.
Then again, I love Seth Rogen in every single film he's in.
Why does everyone hate him so much, anyway?
Because he's annoying? Yes, he is. Very much so, in fact. But he's very funny as well in his annoying way. Does this mean everyone hates Will Ferrell too? Am I the only one that thinks annoying character is needed in movies?

On topic: they all suck. Good decision on the masks they actually choose for the film.

The movie was fun, but could've been better. The original TV show had a very serious tone, then you have Rogen. That's when everything is a joke.

By the way, isn't time to UPDATE these characters by bringing them to our century and NOT still stuck back in the 50's or 70's time? Even in the recent comics these characters' clothes are still stuck in that era...SHEESH!!!
If Batman (Adam West) got updated then whey not Kato and the Green Horny? Wake up creators/writers!!!!

That first mask would've been great in a serious take on the film.

Anyways, I like the film, but, I don't have a problem with Rogen either. Neighbors was very funny along with many of his other films. Like Orehrepus said, if you can tolerate Will Ferrell then you should be able to tolerate Rogen.

Nice masks! I like the full face one, it's a classic, but the one from the 70's show is what wee all know and love. Movie wasn't horrible, but definitely could've been better. Kev Smith's version was much better. Should've also cast Bradley Cooper in the role instead of Rogen.

I had no previous attachment to the Green Hornet and really enjoyed the movie, on par with Kick-ass and Red. Dumb but entertaining.

Rogen should have played the role a bit straighter than he did.

I wanted to see this as bad as I wanted Jack Black to do a comedy Green Lantern. I'm all for poking fun at superheroes and such, but let's leave it for SNL, not for feature-length films.

No freakin mask in the world could've hidden this dog of a movie. Rogen is an OK actor but he sucked in this. The Director and writers should take the brunt of the criticism. The writing was pre-juvenile at best. The director and writer didn't take the content seriously.

I am a huge fan of the Green Hornet so when I saw this shit I was severely disappointed. How could they???
Green Hornet was anything but a comedy comic and tv show. It is serious and gritty with great stories. I thought Kato was good though.
