Universal Pictures has optioned the rights to The Green Hornet and Kato from Amasia, the production banner which is run by former Marvel Studios President Michael Helfant and Bradley Gallo. They acquired the film rights to the pulp franchise back in January.

The title above has been made official, and it's expected that Kato will receive equal billing in both that and the film itself. Introduced through radio shows in the 1930s, The Green Hornet series (which has frequently found its way into comic books as well) revolves around Britt Reid, an American newspaper publisher who dons a mask to fight crime and protect his city.

He's joined in his crime-fighting adventures by his Asian valet and master martial artist Kato.

"Our goal is to make a film that existing fans will love, and new fans will love to discover," said Helfant in a statement, pointing out that Universal actually made the 1940 serials as well. "With Universal, it feels like we are merging the past and the future, creating a contemporary version of the franchise that is fresh and exciting while respecting its long legacy and history."

Gallo adds: "The confluence of America and Asia is so important. Who better to partner with than a company that has such a major presence on both continents? We also know that Universal will align with our 'film geek' sensibilities and offer up a vision which respects the iconic world of The Green Hornet."

A search for writers is expected to begin soon, and a director will likely be found shortly after.

@BritishMonkey - As long as they dont turn the hornet into an idiot and get someone with actual martial arts skill for Kato, it will be better. and dont fill the fights with crappy special effects

Why?

The last reboot -- less than 10 years ago! -- was mediocre. Let this property die.

@PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - If one bad movie means a good property should die, then I guess the mcu shouldn't have used Captain America
Captain America

plus those 2 tv movies.
also The Fantastic Four

plus the 3 other crappy movies
Green Hornet has a decent fan base and yeah the last movie sucked, because they turned it into a Seth Rogan comedy, Green Hornet is not suppose to be a comedy

@dracula - It's really weird that the guy who played Captain America in that film is the son of the guy who wrote Catcher in the Rye.
