Marc Guggenheim Discusses Cut Superman Cameo In Green Lantern!

The co-writer of the movie discusses potential easter eggs and also explains why the Superman cameo was cut, revealing that Smallville's Tom Welling is more than welcome to come along and film that scene if he has time...

On What He Thinks Of The Actors' Performaces In The Movie:

"Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively are so good together it is ridiculous. Peter Sarsgaard is unbelievable. People are going to draw comparisons in his performance to Heath Ledger in 'The Dark Knight.' It is just that good. Mark Strong is ridiculously great. The cast is amazing. The look of the movie is unlike anything you’ve ever seen — and it needs to be. That’s what the concept requires. I think it’s going to be really spectacular."

On Why The Superman Cameo Was Cut From The Script Before Filming:

"Without trying very hard, you could probably find the leaked script on the internet. The Superman cameo is in the leaked script. It survived several drafts. Ultimately, it was cut for budgetary reasons. We took it out in one of our later drafts. After my interview with you, of course. The Clark Kent cameo is still near and dear to my heart. I really wanted it to be in the movie. You never know — it can still happen. If Tom Welling has a free hour or two, you never know."

On Other Easter Eggs And Green Lanter Corps Cameos:

I think there will be plenty of Easter Eggs in the movie on other fronts. I’m a sucker for those. I’m the voice for those. I’m always thinking we can fit in that name or we can fit in that character. I’ll always do that. I can pretty much promise that Ch'p will not be in the movie. Martin’s favorite Lantern, who is in the movie, is Bzzd. The funny thing is, from our very first meeting with Martin, he came onto the project and really knew his stuff. He was able to quote Lanterns and said 'I love Bzzd' from the start. I was like, 'Okay, I guess Bzzd is in the movie.'"

Although he seemingly makes that Tom Welling remark jokingly, could he have let his tongue slip and accidentily revealed that the actor is being considered for the role of the big screen Superman? Probably not, but be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

supes appearing in GL would be awesome and show the general audience that DC has continuity as well as marvel.

I can't believe the studios would be stupid enough to cast Tom Welling. Whether you like Smallville, Tom or both is irrelevant. He carries too much baggage and expectation from years of a watered down DC universe that is just not good enough for the big screen. It's simple as that!

Stubbyswof: Lol, thanks mate - the fact this comments section will ultimately explode into Welling vs. Anti Welling fans was sort of why I made him the teaser image and put that part of the interview in big and bold! :D Gotta love these Superman casting fights...they're almost as fun as the Captain America ones we all used to have!

Ummm I love Smallville, but I still dont know about Welling for Superman in the reboot, especially with the way the Smallville is going. Revealing too many of Superman's Villains.

Oh well If he can do the cameo, I think that will be cool

I'd rather a Welling sighting than no cameo at all. I'll take it.

Budgetary issues my muscular buttocks! Like one Superman cameo would have broke the bank of an already multi million dollar movie. They cut the scene because WB don't want any cross overs, plain and simple. If we are lucky there might be some type of reference to it in a deleted scene someday. Also, he was joking about Welling, thank Christ!

I thought the cameo was of Clark Kent not Superman. It would make since to have Welling since he's only been portraying CK.

@Leee: NO HE'S NOT!

Look, you've had your fun. We get the joke. You're always the guy shouting loudest about how Hollywood [frick]s up our 'beloved' characters and then you "champion" one of the worst portrayals of the most iconic superhero of all.

Yes, the irony is delicious - Routh who was terrible, played a bizarro version of the big guy and looks nothing like Superman with his horse face, effete look and big fat nose is clearly NOT Superman in any way shape or form and yet you say he is. Hilarious. Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.

Btw - I doubt they cut the scene because of budget - how expensive is it to film two guys talking in the street or having a coffee? - they cut it because they're about to make a Superman movie and (a) didn't want to tie them together or (b) haven't cast their Superman yet and didn't want to confuse the issue by putting an "old" Clark/Superman in it.

Neither Routh nor Welling will be in Snyder's Superman. Get with the program.

a small cameo could be cool. Maybe not even Clark, just show an article about Green Lanter and put "photos by Clark Kent" or somewhere have a guy say "Geeze Kent took a good picture of you" to GL

@Backdoor: Not difficult. Pick any name at random out of the Hollywood telephone directory and you're almost guaranteed to pick a better actor than Routh tbh.

That doesn't necessarily mean Welling's any good either.

He's average at best, let's be honest. Better than Routh's utterly dreadful, first day at drama school performances, but not a patch on Reeve.

The new guy has a very big ask - to 'succeed' Reeve - clearly Routh's piss-poor imitation wasn't it, and you're deluded if you think Welling can manage the step-up from TV. They have to find a new guy - period.
