Theatrical Version of Green Lantern Just A Studio's Cut? Director's Cut Coming?

Perhaps the movie's flaws can be redeemed...

Here is something I feel is worth thinking about:

"One thing I feel needs mentioning: this is not Martin Campbell’s cut of the film, but the studio’s. I live in New Orleans where it was shot, I read the shooting script, all of which was painstakingly filmed with intense research, and all of that was left on the cutting room floor — a sort of combination of what happened to Daredevil and Watchmen, respectively — character development sacrificed for CG, scenes made irrelevant by removing their setup. The movie in the theater starts with an explanation of mythos that is made redundant by the more natural, scripted questions from Hal when he gets the ring. Ten minutes of childhood Hal, Carol, and Hector that sets up Hal’s first ring construct is reduced to an awkwardly placed flashback in the middle of another scene. The training with the ring is almost completely excised except for one minor scene. Most appallingly, the ending completely deletes the fact that Kilowog, Sinestro, and Toma-Re arrive at the end and help Hal defeat Parallax. Not to mention Parallax was supposed to be a 3rd act reveal after we spend the film worried about Hammond going evil, not the main villain for the entire film. I sincerely hope we get a director’s cut or at least all the deleted scenes on the video release."

Interesting thoughts... Let's just hope we get to see this Director's Cut when the Blu-Ray releases!

this is what is needed for the film more corp member scenes & definetly set 2/3 of the movie in space.

i said this the other day about daredevil how much better the directors cut was over the normal cut.

daredevil directors cut is more watchable but not amazing.

If this is true, then that is the ONLY way I will even consider buying the DVD. I was hoping it was something like this. I hope its true. This movie was such a let down. and EFF a Reboot. Its too early for that.

I'm with marvel72. I think this would really help out GL.

I think if we got the film that the director really wanted, it might have turned out amazing. If this is really WB's cut. Because Martin Campbell did seem disappointed about some things.

I believe this is true. I remember a friend who worked on the movie telling me that Campbell wanted Hal, Sinestro, Kilowog and Tomar-Re to defeat Parallax together, while Warner wanted Hal to do it alone. I also remember Campbell talking about "training sessions" in Oa in several interviews, and there are actors hired to play kid Hal, kid Carol, kid Hector and even kid Jim and kid Jack.

what is this? scripts change all the time, and the editing process is called the third element of storytelling. this is one person wishing GL was better. We all do. but there's no truth to it.

another fault with the movie, when about six maybe more corp members go to take on parallax at the fifty-five minute mark & they all get pushed back like they couldn't take him out.

about forty minutes later, hal's been a lantern for about five minutes & is able to take on & defeat parallax on his own.

abit of a f*ck up there.

@ otherside

i'm chilled. :D

i know he becomes the greatest green lantern ever, but it seemed abit quick.

no experience at all but can defeat parallax, but when seasoned corp members take him on they don't do shit.

The concept art is so great. What the hell happened between these concept and storyboards pieces to give us that train wreck? Having the other lanterns there for support would have been great, give us more screen time with the characters. I didn't hate the movie, I just think it was mishandled. Even discounting the fact I'm a GL fan, I still think it was a poor film. Definitely aimed at kids and for the selling of toys. A damn shame the studio had to do all their cuts and edits. It kind of shits all over Campbell, and didn't help their movie at all.

I'd be far more curious to see a directors cut. Can't imagine Campbell screwed it up all on his own.

It still seems though that a lot of the stuff that was cut didn't even have FX work done or may have just not been shot. I mean, if Kilowog and Sinestro were supposed to be in the final battle, then why cut them out?

I think a new cut would just be more daddy issues and Blake Lively and Hector Hammond screen time. WB wont spend more money on FX at this point and if it was already done it would have been in the theatrical movie!

Daredevil's DC was better but there wasn;t any more action ofr FX scenes.

There's no way that WB is putting more money into this to finish any scenes cut from the final film. More non-ring Earth stuff could be added, but that would likely be it.

I'd like to see a longer cut of Thor too... There was a lot of Earth-bound stuff cut from that one as well.

i understand everyones faults witht the film, but i enjoyed it alot. I think its to early to start talking reboot. They can make a sequel involving more of sinestro becoming more succumbed to the power of fear, leading to a epic battle with hal and the third one, he has the sinestro corps war. Thats what i think should happen. WB and everyone can take consideration that this one has been getting a bad rep, and fix the flaws and give the comicbook community and a regular audience a movie they can both get behind.

I say, if this is true - don't buy the first release of the film - let its sales fall - then they might release a director's cut to break even.

I agree whole heartedly with this article, you only have to refer back to the first trailer to see footage and hear script lines which didn't make the theatrical version. Examples of this include;

1. The footage of GL standing over the kid (possibly his nephew) looking up with ring aloft glowing and ready for action.

2. Hal talking about "when i'm flying it feels like anything is possible - no matter how bad things get theres always good out there just over the horizon"

3.) The "what happens now" comment with Hal responding with "we go look for trouble" instead of the poor "doesn't the hero get the girl?" garbage.

All in all these scenes could make things flow a little better and would clear up some of the problems regarding the movie.

In my opinion this would certainly explain better Sinestro putting on the yellow ring if he, and others, did indeed help Hal defeat Parallax thus not making a mockery of Hal defeating it on his own and confirming that will is indeed stronger than fear. With this message Sinestro has no reason whatsoever to use the yellow ring unless a group of GLs defeat Parallax.

As far as i'm concerned bring on a Directors Cut!

We really should start a petition for WB to release a Director's Cut. Maybe even theatrically. Otherwise, here's a great potential franchise ruined by executive meddling. This is the only way WB could redeem themselves in my eyes.

C'mon, SHOW US THAT DIRECTOR'S CUT, WB!
