TOP GUN: MAVERICK Star Glen Powell Responds To "Humbling" Green Lantern And Cyclops Fan Casts

Sharing his thoughts on his Devotion co-star, Jonathan Majors, playing the MCU's big bad, Top Gun: Maverick's Glen Powell talks Cyclops and Green Lantern fan casts, his Captain Planet project, and more.

After starring in Top Gun: Maverick and Devotion, Glen Powell's star is very much on the rise. A huge superhero role for the actor following those projects feels inevitable, with Green Lantern and Cyclops two potential roles often suggested by fans.

During a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Powell was asked to share his thoughts on his Devotion co-star, Jonathan Majors, prepping to become the Marvel Cinematic Universe's new big bad, Kang the Conqueror. "It's just so fun watching that guy take on the world," the actor raved. "He's literally taking over the entire mortal world. It's wild."

As for his own superhero future, Powell admitted he isn't a huge comic book fan and confirmed he hasn't ever "had a conversation with Marvel."

Despite that, he's appreciative of the support he receives from fans when it comes to him potentially playing Hal Jordan or Scott Summers. "It takes a long time to navigate this town, so for anyone to be like, 'Oh, he'd be great in this role,' it's humbling, it's great."

While Marvel and DC haven't come calling (yet), Powell remains attached to Captain Planet, and reiterated during this conversation that he's still waiting to hear whether the project will move forward at Warner Bros.

"I think those conversations will be happening shortly," he noted. "I know DiCaprio is super passionate about it. I'm super passionate about it. I think it could be great...I want that one to work. I'd love to play that superhero."

A superhero role will happen for Powell sooner rather than later, we're sure, and with the DCEU being rebooted as the DCU, James Gunn and Peter Safran should be able to find a character for the charismatic Scream Queens alum to suit up as. Who that might be remains to be seen, of course, but Green Lantern does seem like a good fit.

What do you guys think?

I wish him success and hope he's cast in various roles.

When I first saw that he was in Devotion, my concern was that he'd become typecast, having played two pilot characters back to back.

very few actors right now have that "movie star" je ne sais quois that he has. cruise has probably aged out of the jordan role, but powell would be an excellent choice

He's more Booster Gold than Green Lantern.

I think he’d be a great Guy Gardner or DCAU style Wally West

There are a handful of actors where the moment I saw them on screen for the first time, my mind instantly went to a marvel character they should plauly

He is one, for cyclops
The blonde roommate from Wednesday, as spider Gwen

No casting call needed. Feige should call them directly

@Vigor - you mean Emma Myers? Because then you're not the first

@bkmeijer1 - yep that's her! I only saw that she also was interested in the role after I finished the show. Goes to show she's just perfect for it

@bkmeijer1 - I could honestly see Emma as Kitty Pryde too. She's got the feistiness and plucky optimism that Elliot's take on Kitty never really got to present because he was so sidelined.

I was reading something yesterday about sabretooth. A character that throughout the years I forgot about. He is so cool. And he is just one of so many. And it made me think of just how many cool xmen characters there are

Cyclops for instance, the pompous jerk He is (depending which comic you read) could be just as big a draw as Chris Evans was captain America

@Vigor - I definitely agree. And as per your comments above, I think Glen Powell is a really good choice for the role.

Like Evans, his handsomeness definitely helps with the popularity.

@bkmeijer1 - mcu avengers worked so well because marvel put such an emphasis on each character of the OG 6

Foxmen to this day leaves a bad taste in my mouth because in contrast to the xmen animated show from the 90s, it only put real focus on 3-4 characters. Mystique, Xavier, magneto and Logan

If mcu does xmen like the way they put care into the avengers, I see 2+ billion dollar movies becoming the norm for them

Would like @corndogburglar thoughts on the matter too

@Vigor - I totally agree. The X-Men movies NEED to handle the team aspect. Each core member needs to have around the same amount of screen time. Here's a list of screen times for each character in the first Avengers movie.

Hawkeye - 12m 15s
Thor - 18m
Banner - 21m 45s
Black Widow - 24m 45s
Cap - 28m 15s
Iron Man - 31m 15s

They're all pretty close with Hawkeye being the lowest by far. But he was also brainwashed for half the movie and not around the Avengers. So it makes sense.

This is how X-Men needs to do it. But it's also important to understand that screen time doesn't necessarily equal story lines. Not every character can have a deep story line in every movie, and it was never like that in Avengers films either. But if the characters have screen time we are at least getting to know them better and they are developing, which is what's really important.

As for Cyclops, he is my favorite comic character of all time for several reasons. The obvious reasons are his sheer badassery that most people overlook. He's an awesome leader and he went toe to toe with Wolverine in a fist fight several times lol. But his flaws are what make him great. He's done really crappy things when it comes to his female relationships. He questions his own abilities. He's by far not the shining example of perfection that Cap is.

But in the movies I would leave the relationship stuff out. Mainly because that opens a whole can of worms around Madelyn Pryor and all that, and I don't feel it's worth the time in films. Show his flaws in his own confidence issues.

But his leadership should 100% be up to par with Cap's. My favorite description of him actually comes from Iron Man during the Civil War X-Men Tie In issue. Iron Man shows up at the mansion to try and recruit the X-Men to his side. As he's flying in he spots Cyclops standing outside and he goes on a brief monologs and says:

"Scott Summers' leadership might as well be considered a second mutation. He's a natural born leader. While Captain America is a great leader because he always finds a way to win, no matter what, Cyclops has already analyzed the battlefield and determined the best approach for each of his team members to achieve the best outcome of any situation".

This is exactly how he should be portrayed in the films.

@CorndogBurglar - looks like I called on the right person for insight here. Wasn't aware you were a big fan of cyclops. I agree with everything. I gravitate to capt America for the same reasons I gravitate to cyclops and towars sojourn (for those thar play overwatch2). I just like these leadership type heroes who inspire others.

@Vigor - I've always been the same. Cap is my favorite Avenger. Cyclops is my favorite X-Man. Leonardo is my favorite turtle. The Red Ranger was my favorite power ranger (until the green ranger showed up, because I mean, come on).

But yeah, I didn't put it together that all my favorite characters were leaders until my 20's. Then I was like, "huh. Interesting"

@CorndogBurglar - I wish Marvel would ret-con some of Scott’s bad choices out of existence. He shouldn’t be a perfect Boy Scout but he’s been a real a$$ at times.

CorndogBurglar - 1/13/2023, 11:58 AM
@RolandD - So, I agree to an extent. I hated the whole way he hooked up with Madelyn, had a kid, then ditched them the second Jean came back. That whole thing was a bit too much.

I think Cyclops in the Astonishing X-Men is probably his best portrayal of all time. He was really good in that series.

Honestly can see Glen as Hal, Richard Rider, Mento, or Booster Gold. He would make an pretty good Scott but my eternal fancasting for him is Freddie Stroma, he looks almost identical to the Jim Lee art of him, he's 5'11 but he can easily wear platform boots to make him look taller, he's built but pretty slim and athletic too, and he could bring a very likable, relatable, slightly goofy charm to Scott (which has been very much missing from the character).

Would not be shocked that once Superman starts production that Glenn Powell's name will be thrown in to a mix of rumors...and maybe...might actually be Clark Kent.

@ForceofWakanda - just don’t think Brandon routh, Glenn Powell and to a lesser extent Liev Schreiber have enough star power at this point in there careers for these big roles.

Absolutely onboard with Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm though.

@DesiSpiderman -

I honestly think that's a good thing though, you probably don't want a bigger name to supersede the role
