BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Reclaims First & SIN CITY 2 Bombs

What's the lesson from Sin City: A Dame To Kill For? It's probably not a good idea to wait nine years to make a sequel, as interest in it is likely to wane. On a positive note, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is back on top at the North American box office.

The Friday numbers are rolling in from the North American box office and it looks like Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy will reclaim first. It had spent the past few weeks behind Paramount's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The James Gunn-directed comic book movie will finish up the weekend with $17.2M to $17.6M. The previous box office champ, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is in a dogfight for second place aganst the newcomer, If I Stay.  Both films are expected to finish up somewhere around $15.2M to $16.5M.

Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is having an awful weekend. And that might be putting it nice. The sequel to the 2005 film was initially expected to make at least $15 million in its opening weekend, but after a rough Thursday expectation were taken down to $10 million. Apparently that figure wasn't low enough. It'll finish in sixth place with a meager $6M to $7M. The original had a $29 million weekend and finished up with $74 million. It cost $40 million to make the first film and it cost $60M to $70M to make the sequel. By the way, I know how much Sin City 3 will cost. Answer: nothing! Because there won't be one.

Expendables is unexpectedly weak. It's beaten by The Giver, which is, if I'm not mistaken, a sci-fi drama, which is a hard genre to be successful.

GOTG has prevailed against numerous new films, that's quite surprising. Sin City is not as good as the first, doesn't have the usual support of a sequel aince it came after a decade and doesn't have any jokes for the GA to enjoy.

It's a dystopian film, in the vein of Hunger Games and Divergent.

Maybe this will deflate some of Miller's ego and he'll start acting like a normal human being again.

Getting stomped by Guardians and Turtles SHOULD accomplish that.

Well it's official: GOTG has legs!! Apparently, those legs were long enough to run down the Turtles AND bitch-slap Sin City 2 before it could get out of the gate.

I think the main lesson pulled from this is: Frank Miller is NOT very successful with film sequels. That, and I think that his "style" is becoming repetitive (like Tim Burton). He's done a lot of great work but his egotism is causing me to enjoy this just a wee bit!!!

^This.

I was excited when they announced a sequel was coming. But as the years went by I just stopped giving a shit. I'll wait for it to hit netflix.

Stubner - 8/23/2014, 3:14 AM
You would think that after NINE years the first Sin City film would have an even bigger following now with a new generation.

I saw, I enjoyed it. The first one came out when I was was in twelfth grade so why isn't the high school crowd of 2014 racing to the theaters like we did in 2005? Especially now since there's another film to watch to get ready for the sequel?

I really don't get it. Shame.
CherryBomb
CherryBomb - 8/23/2014, 3:20 AM
@loki

I haven't seen any reviews criticise the style and look of the film, they've all praised it! I just think they should've marketed the film as though it was more of a new movie rather than a straight out sequel. Because it has been 9 years and audiences don't remember the first all too well.

But I do think the style is growing tiresome, with 300 too and like you said, similarities to Tim Burton's movies.

Kyos - 8/23/2014, 3:20 AM
I loved the first Sin City, but nothing I've seen of the sequel really made me that interested in the movie. Nevertheless I wouldn't have wanted for it to crash that hard, if only because I like a lot of the actors involved. :(

Aside from that: yay Guardians! In 5 days this wonderful movie finally opens here in Germany, and I'm looking forward to watching it again. How are the international BO numbers doing anyways?

I still think If I Stay will end up #1 with a strong Saturday and Sunday but the fact Guardians even might reclaim the top spot is fantastic! I hoped it would do well but in my highest expectations I never thought it would be the #1 movie in the US for the year. I doubt it holds off Hunger Games or The Hobbit but WOW, way to handle business being at the top as Summer closes!
