James Gunn introduced audiences to his ragtag bunch of intergalactic A-holes in the first Guardians of the Galaxy back in 2014, but the characters have been utilized by other directors since, most notably in the Russo Brothers' Avengers movies.
The team was an integral part of Infinity War (and Endgame to a lesser extent), aiding a fallen Thor and launching a valiant attempt to defeat Thanos before he could acquire all six Infinity Stones.
During that battle, Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) basically sabotaged the heroes' efforts by whacking the Mad Titan with his gun when he learned that the villain had sacrificed his own daughter, Gamora, for the Soul Stone. It was something a lot of fans took issue with (Peter Quill had been portrayed as a bit of a fool at times, but a blithering idiot?), and it sounds like Gunn would tend to agree!
Here's an excerpt from a THR piece on the filmmaker and his cast.
"'They did some things that I wouldn’t have wanted,' says Gunn of the films. (Yes, he says, Star-Lord would have killed Gamora if she asked him to; no, he would not have punched Thanos and doomed the universe.)"
To be fair, Quill did ultimately shoot Gamora after some hesitation... but Thanos turned the blast into bubbles!

"In Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past." "Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them."
