David Corenswet's career will likely blast through the stratosphere when he becomes the latest actor to suit-up as arguably the most iconic superhero of all time in James Gunn's Superman, but it's now come to light that he actually auditioned to play another mega-powerful caped character... in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Gunn revealed that Corenswet read for the role of Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but it doesn't sound like he made much of an impression - because the director has no memory of his audition!
"I asked him about [his audition] and he said he did so I believe him, but I don’t remember it," Gunn responded to a fan on Threads, who also asked if the VFX used for the Man of Steel's flying sequences will be similar to Warlock's.
"No, what we’re doing now for flying is much more complex than what was done for Adam Warlock," replied Gunn.
In hindsight, Corenswet must be glad he didn't land the Adam Warlock part. There's nothing to say he couldn't also have played Superman in the DCU, of course, but Warlock was a much smaller role, and the character's future in the MCU is uncertain.
Even though Vol. 3 did leave the door open for another movie featuring the new team (which includes Warlock), we know Gunn won't be taking the helm, and it will probably be quite some time before Marvel Studios decides to revisit those characters.
Do you think Corenswet would have been a better fit for Adam Warlock than Poulter? Drop us a comment down below.
Superman will also star Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.
More recently, Sara Sampaio signed on to play Lex's assistant/lover Eve Teschmacher, and Skyler Gisondo has been cast as Jimmy Olsen. Milly Alcock's Supergirl is also rumored to make her debut ahead of her own Woman of Tomorrow movie, but that's yet to be confirmed.
We're still not sure exactly how these other superheroes will factor into the story, but Gunn has previously revealed that Superman's dual-life as both Clark Kent and the Man of Steel will be explored in the film, suggesting that these characters will be his "super friends." Whether they'll be part of an actual team or not remains to be seen.
“Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday,” Gunn captioned the first official photo earlier this year. “When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film ‘Superman: Legacy.’ By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN,” he added. “Making our way to you July 2025.”
Filming had been taking place in Svalbard, Norway, but is believed to have moved to Atlanta, Georgia. Superman is set to fly into theaters on July 11, 2025.
