GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Star Dave Bautista Confirms He's Done Playing Drax...But Hopes To Rejoin The MCU

Dave Bautista has confirmed he bid farewell to the role of Drax after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but makes it clear he remains open to playing another character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe...

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 concluded James Gunn's trilogy and, if Marvel Studios should choose to retire the team, the stories of these characters as well. The door was left open for the "Legendary" Star-Lord to return, though, and Rocket now leads a new iteration of the Guardians.

As for Drax, he chose to remain on Knowhere with Nebula to raise the children created by The High Evolutionary. While he could quite easily return to action, Dave Bautista has repeatedly made it clear he's done playing the character.

Talking to io9 about his role in Dune: Part 2, the pro wrestler turned actor reiterated that his time as the Destroyer has ended but made it clear he remains open to working with Marvel Studios again. Or James Gunn's DC Studios should the filmmaker come calling.

"No, no. When I said that I was done, I was really just done with my journey as Drax," he explains. "I still have a relationship with Marvel. I’ve seen Kevin Feige again, Lou [D’Esposito] as recently as two weeks ago. And they know that I would be up for a role. I love the universe - the superhero universe, I love it. I’m a fan."

"So Marvel or DC, if they call, I would answer the phone. And if the role makes sense, I’d be all over it. I just would like the opportunity to do a bigger role, a different role. Maybe a deeper role," Bautista continued. "I’d love to have the opportunity to play, like an ominous villain in the superhero universe. Yeah. But never. I’m not done with it. But my journey with Drax is over."

Last year, the Guardians of the Galaxy star admitted that he's seeking roles which challenge him, something Drax didn't necessarily do.

"[Working on the James Gunn-directed franchise] wasn’t all pleasant. It was hard playing that role. The makeup process was beating me down. And I just don’t know if I want Drax to be my legacy — it’s a silly performance, and I want to do more dramatic stuff."

"Honestly, I could give a f***k [about being a movie star]. I don’t live a great big glamorous life. I live here in Tampa. I don’t care about the spotlight, I don’t care about fame. I just want to be a better actor. I want respect from my peers...It’s about the experience, about knowing that I accomplished something."

Marvel Studios has yet to announce plans for The Legendary Star-Lord or any other Guardians-related plans. It's likely at least some of the characters will return in the next Avengers movies, but nothing has been confirmed on that front, unfortunately.

You can rejoin the MCU… as Drax.

@FireandBlood - Or he can come back as multiverse Drax, just like Saldana played a new Gamora. Technically they are different characters.

@mastakilla39 - Gamora wasn't a different character. She was the Gamora from 2014. The Gamora from the first Guardians of the Galaxy. Except instead of spending years with Peter and the others and gaining compassion and joy, She went with the Ravagers to continue feeding her killer instincts.

@ObserverIO - They are both bald but I'm not convinced he has the range for that. Hugo Strange requires someone with a certain gravitas.

@ObserverIO - Yeah, I'd really like to see his take as Hugo Strange. A scientist who can take Batman hand-to-hand would be dope.

Just call him Huge Strange lol

I wanted to see Drax die just to see him reunited with his family again. I feel like that’s what he deserved.

@valmic - What a cynical outlook
SATW42
SATW42 - 2/27/2024, 9:34 AM
@FinnishDude - I don't think it's necessarily cynical. Especially in Marvel where it's been established there are many different planes to the after life.

So yes, in the real world this would be cynical, but in Marvel we've seen the ancestral plane, Duat & Field Of Reeds, Valhalla, whatever the afterlife was Rocket saw in Guardians 3. While I'm glad we have a smiling Dancing Drax being able to be a father figure among the living, I don't think it's a cynical take ot have wanted to see a happy tearful reunion with his family in his afterlife.

JK I loved his Drax.

I wish he wouldn’t look down on the role of Drax so much…

I get that he & even some fans had issues with the more comedic route the character was taken but he still had moments of genuine heart & pathos imo (maybe not as much as Dave wanted but still).

Even then , comedy is the hardest genre to do so to be able to have good comic timing like he had (even if the humor itself was hit or miss imo) is still a great talent & skill to have so I hope with time he comes to appreciate it more.

I wouldn’t want him back in the MCU though because I generally don’t like double dipping casting (unless it’s a voice role or motion capture)

@TheVisionary25 - He's made a ton of comments about his journey as Drax, in many of them he's grateful for it making him a movie star and opening up a lot of opportunities for him.

Still think he could make a good Hugo Strange.

Getting tired of these meathead wrestlers who think they are great actors because of action movies. (Yeah THE Rock, I'm lookin' at THE you.)

Drax is the best role this genius will ever see.
