Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn has previously spoken about how important Rocket is to the movie, and has now revealed that the wise-cracking racoon was one of the main reasons he agreed to return to complete the trilogy.

While speaking to Total Film, Gunn explained why Rocket was the most essential element to get right when it came to nailing the ensemble's character arcs.

"The most important thing for me was Rocket's story, and then, following that, everybody else. Rocket is the secret protagonist of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and has always been the centre of it for me; and this is really fulfilling that. The reason I came back, and decided to do this movie, was because I really felt like Rocket's story needed to be told – and it was left hanging after Vol 2. So that's the most important thing."

Fans are very worried about Rocket after the trailers, but we think it'll be another character that bites the big one before the credits roll. Who knows - maybe they'll all fly away together, one last time, into the forever and beautiful sky?

Check out a new image of Rocket below.

"In Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past." "Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them."

Gunn writes and directs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, and Maria Bakalova. Kevin Feige is the producer and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nikolas Korda, Simon Hatt, and Sara Smith serve as executive producers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters on May 5, 2023.

Drax dies and gets to go to the afterlife to be with his wife and daughter for eternity.

Rocket had better NOT die though!

I don't care if Bob Iger has to drop a mountain's weight worth of cash at his doorstep while sucking him off, there has to be some way he can stay at Marvel. but maybe that's just wishful thinking.

We are going to see Rocket’s origin story and meet his first love. Makes sense that he will be getting some great character moments.

This will be the best comic book movie of the year,we've had two duds already, the next two The Marvels and maybe Aquaman 2,yeah Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 3 will the best comic book movie this year.

@marvel72 - I’m sure you are right. While The Flash could be a crowd-pleaser with the inclusion of Batmen, it can’t have the same emotional punch that this one will. The rest will likely be bad to ok.

@marvel72 - It will be the best MCU movie of 2023, but I have my doubts whether it will cross $600 million -- a year ago, $800 million would have been the over-under. The MCU brand has taken a beating. It's going to take a new set of characters and new mythos (Fantastic Four?) to get the MCU back to the top.

@mountainman - I forgot about The Flash, yeah I agree The Batmen could draw the crowds and the trailer did look good.

@GeneralZod - I think it might do £800 million, they are popular bunch of characters.I do also believe that the MCU is damaged so I can see why you are saying $600 million,

Fantastic Four and The X-Men are what people want and see but they seem years away.

@marvel72 - wouldn’t bet on F4 doing that well unless it’s really good

Seems like this one will be very emotional at the very least. Cautiously optimistic Gunn will crush it
