It's still early days, but Deadline has shared early box office data for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 which suggests the threequel has earned roughly $14 million during Thursday previews.
We'll have confirmed numbers a little later today, but this is a solid start for the movie and one that bodes well for what's currently shaping up to be an interesting weekend for James Gunn's farewell to the team. A few weeks ago, tracking pointed to a $130 million opening weekend, but that's since been lowered to a more conservative $110 million.
As the trade explains, no one is currently sure where the latest Guardians of the Galaxy movie will land, though it should debut with an impressive $250 million global opening.
On a brighter note, advance tickets have picked up in recent days, and are now nearing the same levels as Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. That arrived in theaters with $106.1 million over three days and $120.3 million over four. For comparison's sake, Guardians of the Galaxy earned $11.2 million during its first Thursday, while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 followed that with $17 million.
Thanks to the pandemic, box office takings have decreased in North America and $14 million is a respectable haul for a movie that hasn't quite received the same level of critical praise as its predecessors. However, Vol. 3 currently boasts a 96% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie's CinemaScore hasn't been revealed yet, though we should have that information to share with you soon.
"As heart-wrenching as it is hilarious," we said in our review earlier this week, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is James Gunn’s masterstroke and a showcase for both his filmmaking talent and a cast that makes everything about this movie simply awesome. An absolute triumph."
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now playing in theaters.
