James Gunn Rehired By Disney To Direct GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3; Will Still Helm THE SUICIDE SQUAD

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was supposed to be released next year but when some offensive Tweets written by director James Gunn resurfaced from around a decade ago, Disney was forced to fire the filmmaker much to the anger of fans and cast members alike.

Now, Deadline has confirmed that the filmmaker has been rehired by Disney and despite the fact he's still working on The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros., production will begin on the next Guardians movie as soon as work on that concludes. Walt Disney Studios President Alan Horn met Gunn a number of times after his dismissal and after accepting his apology and repeating how Gunn has handled the decision, he chose to ask him back.

The trade adds that despite meetings with Taika Waititi and Adam McKay, Marvel Studios only ever wanted Gunn at the helm of the threequel and it sounds like Kevin Feige may have pushed for Gunn's return as it was always the plan to use his screenplay and someone failing to direct that to its full potential would have been a PR nightmare for Marvel Studios.

Now, we're getting both a Suicide Squad movie and another instalment of Guardians of the Galaxy from Gunn in the space of a few years.

Awesome, right?
