New GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Clip Introduces Rocket's Adorable Counter-Earth Pals

Another new clip from Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been released, this time taking us back to Rocket's childhood on Counter-Earth, where we find out why he decided on his name...

This latest clip from Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is quite a bit more emotional than the others we've seen, as we flash back to Rocket's childhood on Counter-Earth, where he and his fellow animal pals have been experimented on by the High Evolutionary (the bastard).

Lyla suggests that they all give themselves names for when "Sire" takes them to the new home he promised, and we find out why our favourite surly space-racoon chose to call himself Rocket.

Director James Gunn also took to Twitter to announce that Linda Cardellini will voice Lylla, Mikaela Hoover is Floor, and Asim Chaudhry will play Teefs.

"I was very, very careful about what we see in terms of animals being hurt because it is something I'm incredibly squeamish about, and people are squeamish about," Gunn tells Collider. "So I think the difficult stuff to watch in the movie – and there is some difficult stuff at times – is because of the idea of what's happening more than what you actually see. You don't see very much, in terms of violence or harm to animals, but you do see these little animals, the results of which are not the most beautiful, but somehow they're extraordinarily cute."

"In Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past." "Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them."

Gunn writes and directs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, and Maria Bakalova. Kevin Feige is the producer and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nikolas Korda, Simon Hatt, and Sara Smith serve as executive producers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters on May 5, 2023.

Well that was great. I can put up with stupid jokes if we get more stuff like this in the movie. The center of this franchise has always been the family dynamic, and it looks like we are going to get some good stuff with Rocket’s backstory.

Also, High Evolutionairy may not fit the comic look I expected, but I can’t wait for his downfall for experimenting on such adorable animals. Evil evil man.

@mountainman - I mean that's pretty much been this series since the beginning.

James Gunn's trademark humor with really heartfelt storytelling.

@HOTSHOT - And the heartfelt storytelling part is how this D-list Marvel team has been embraced so much by audiences. I do wish he cut out with the pre-teen humor, but I can look past it if the movie is good. I’m in the camp that liked GOTG2 almost as much as the first one simply because of the awesome character moments.

@mountainman - Agreed. I don't mind the stupid jokes as I know that everyone has their own sense of humor (mine's admittedly pretty broad) and Marvel tries to offer something for everyone as much as possible. So while the more stupid jokes and physical comedy may not appeal to all adults, or even most adults, it will likely appeal to younger folk and even little kids. Personally, I've always had something of an "immature" sense of humor (although I've never found things like "The Three Stooges" to be funny and having 2 little kids has made me more aware of what kids their age find funny, so I can understand the appeal of some of these dumber jokes (and I'll be honest, there are some episodes of shows like "Peppa Pig" and "Bluey" that are pretty funny - in particular there's an episode of "Bluey" called "Unicorse" which is absolutely f**king hilarious (to me anyway)).

Anyhow, yeah, it looks like there are going to be a lot of feels in this movie, particularly with Rocket. Even watching that clip is kinda difficult seeing what the HE did to those animals (the rabbit with the clamp-jaw? WTF?!?), and I know that it's all make-believe but still I hope that (1) Rocket and Llyla get a happy ending and (2) the HE gets what he deserves. And regarding his look, I think that there is still more to be revealed as it's pretty obvious that his face is stretched skin and he does appear to have a lot of cybernetic enhancements, so let's wait and see what his final form looks like.

I’m not as excited for this as I should be.

@PlusUltra - I wholeheartedly believe Gunn's transition to running DC has had a sort of underlying impact on GOTG 3; its aura and the anticipation surrounding it. Idk if he or Marvel anticipated this. Sure, they agreed that he would promote GOTG, finish the job but the simultaneous DCU promoting he has had to do is integral.

Because Gunn is tied to Guardians in a way that few MCU directors are tied to their property. And now you have Gunn's name becoming more synonymous with DC. I am truly more interested in what he's doing with DC than Guardians. When I think Gunn now, I think DCU.

Didn't know until that that Counter-Earth was Rocket's home. Always thought he was from Earth like Peter Quill, so this all just helps adding in the context of why the footage of the movie in the trailers and half of the action takes place in that world. It's Rocket's home. It's starting all to become clear.

Cute clip. After seeing this I'm gonna believe that a LOT could happen to the Guardians and their fates, but good ol' Rocket will earn a nice retirement in Counter-Earth by the end, hopefully.

@NinnesMBC - I would think the animals were taken from Earth, so Rocket could still be originally from Earth.

@mountainman - It could be that too, it's just that seeing how they all can speak like humans and Gunn shared a BTS pic recently on Twitter about some characters called "Humanimals" or something it made me think if maybe these are their own species.

Unless the High Evolutionary experimented on their vocal cords too.

The original Rocket miniseries by Bill Mantlo and Mike Mignola were among my favorites when I was a kid, so I'm 100% here for Rocket and Lyla's story getting its due. Cannot wait for this.

What are you nattering on about now girl?

I'm wondering if they will tie anything in this movie to all the Kang multiverse nonsense. Then we could see Jonathon Majors fighting Adam Warlock. & slapping down GotG BeeOtches left & right.
