The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special has been a hit with fans, and writer and director James Gunn has now revealed that he also played a key role in the Special Presentation in front of the camera.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special was an absolute delight, and proof Marvel Studios' "Special Presentations" are among the best ideas they've had in this Multiverse Saga era of storytelling.

With the filmmaker gearing up to make the leap to DC Studios as its new co-CEO alongside producer Peter Safran, he won't be returning to the MCU for any further projects after next May's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. As a result, the only Holiday Specials we're likely to get from him are those set in the DCU (The King Shark Holiday Special, anyone?).

Over the past few days, Gunn has been sharing plenty of insights into his MCU return on social media, including the fact he had a secret role in the Christmastime caper.

There's been a lot of confusion over how Groot was brought to life in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, with many left convinced it was actually a practical costume instead of VFX. Gunn has debunked that, but confirms he once again provided the motion reference for Groot's dancing.

He did the same for Guardians of the Galaxy's mid-credits scene and again in the sequel's standout opening dance number.

Gunn has also revealing this Groot is the Young Adult version of the character, naming him "Swoll Groot." Vin Diesel has previously said we'll see "Alpha Groot" in the threequel, though the director would later go some way in dismissing that (the Fast & Furious star making bold, hard-to-believe claims about his place in the MCU has become the norm).

Check out the filmmaker's comments in full below.

@HeavyMetal4Life - he looked better in the leaked trailer, like a young man, he was shooting with a gun side-by-side with Starlord (who was wearing his blue/red costume)

Griot’s proportions looked very off to me. His head looked too small and immature in proportion to his body size. He was the only one of the Guardians that I was disappointed with in the special.

That special was what I should’ve expected from a Gunn Guardians Christmas special but for some reason I was expecting something a little more cinematic

I wonder if they would ever be so bold as to use a special presentation as a way to tell origin stories for bigger heroes who wont get movies or tv shows, but they want in the MCU as background characters.

Like maybe they want to do a Robbie Reyes ghost Rider show but dont have enough time to establish the backstory of the lore and Jhonny Blaze, or it just fit into the pacing of the story they want to tell in the show or movie, so instead they do a Special Presentation, a 45 min short film pulp style introducing whichever celebrity they cast for Johnny, and they tell his whole story and why the mantle is getting passed.

Thats a super thin example. But kinda like that. Maybe the X-Men get a special presentation that is like a student film or found footage style short having like Kitty Pride and Kurt Wagner running around the X-Mansion introducing themselves on video to the new students and old teachers, and at the end we see the tape was recovered by like Sinister or something.

But to give us origin storys as shorts.

Well i guess Werewolf by Night was exactly that lol nvm lol

@TheVandalore - 75-90 min origin specials would be great

I love baby Groot. Teenage Groot is okay. But I need full grown man Groot back. What a lovable log.

Hate to say it, but the shittiness of Groot's look kept taking us out of it when we were watching. Looked like a shitty Thanksgiving parade costume.
