Director Peter Berg Has An Idea Of When HANCOCK 2 Filming Will Begin

Peter Berg states that once he finishes up obligations for Battleship and Lone Survivor and Will Smith does likewise for After Earth and MIB III, cameras will roll for a Hancock sequel.

Hancock Will Smith
The French website, CineHeroes had a chat with director Peter Berg recently and one of the topics of discussion was Hancock 2. Here's what Berg had to say. Translation from BleedingCool.com:

This should be done. We are in talks. Once our respective projects will be finished, that Will Smith is finished with Men In Black 3, once I’m done with Battleship and Lone Survivor, we will. I talked with Will Smith, he is always ready.

Of course, Will Smith is also in talks to star in another sequel [or prequel, if you're being technical] to one of his blockbusters, I Am Legend. Time will tell whether this proves to come to fruition as the schedule Berg creates puts the Hancock 2 start date pretty far from now and in Hollywood, a number of things could pop-up to derail the project between now and then.

The film earned $624,386,746 at the box-office on a $150 million dollar budget. It's rather shocking that we haven't had a sequel yet based on those numbers alone.

Hancock is a 2008 American action-comedy superhero film directed by Peter Berg and starring Will Smith, Jason Bateman, and Charlize Theron. It tells the story of a vigilante superhero, John Hancock (Smith) from Los Angeles whose reckless actions routinely cost the city millions of dollars. Eventually one person he saves, Ray Embrey (Bateman), makes it his mission to change Hancock's public image for the better.

The story was originally written by Vincent Ngo in 1996. It languished in development hell for years and had various directors attached, including Tony Scott, Michael Mann, Jonathan Mostow, and Gabriele Muccino before going into production in 2007. Hancock was filmed in Los Angeles with a production budget of $150 million.

In the United States, the film was rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America after changes were made at the organization's request in order to avoid a "restricted" (R) rating, which it had received twice before. The film was presented and widely released on July 2, 2008 in the United States and the United Kingdom by Columbia Pictures. Hancock received mixed reviews from film critics and grossed more than $620 million in theaters worldwide.

I never cared for the first one. Will Smith was great, otherwise I found it to be very forgettable. Would rather not see a sequel.

I must say that I would rather see this get made first. I have very little love for Smith's Omega Man reboot. The world created in Hancock could really go somewhere. Especially if there are more Celestials in the picture this time around. Flashbacks...something?

I liked Hancock. I'd really like a sequel but once I saw this, I figured a sequel might not happen. That part just kinda threw me for a loop.

Why do people post hateful comments. If you didn't like the first movie, why even click on the link to read the article? If I'm browsing through stories and don't like a particular subject, I don't click on it. You come across as a shitbag when you do that.

I really liked the first movie and would love an origin prequel. Can't wait to see Battleship to see if Peter Berg has what it takes.

I thought that Hancock was one of the most original superhero movies in recent years. It was a great film. I would totally be down with a sequel.

I even had an idea for a sequel that Hancock meets his arch nemesis who is like him but is evil. In the first film Charlize Theron's charcter said that Hancock was extra strong because he is ment to be a hero and they could use that to introduce a villain version of Hancock.

Bring it on give us some more back story and a strong villain, love story is interjected to make the human interest and to bring women into the film because studios don't make money on comic book fans alone.

they're obviously not planning on making this into something compelling, they want to stay on that superhero comedy track, and by that, they need fresh jokes and funny situations and big name out side the box actor to add as a villain and lots of cgi action. and its guaranteed to repeat its success

I think if you're going to create an original Superhero for the big screen, making him more of an anti-hero is a risky proposition.

Even with that said, I thought the first movie was decent. And you can't deny how cool it is to see Will Smith play a superhero.

If the studio can get some great writers for this, we will be in for a movie that lives up to it's potential. Something we saw spades of in the first film.

HANCOCK WAS ABOUT LOSING ONESELF, FALLING TO THE LOWEST OF LOWS, GIVE THAT TO A SUPERHUMAN AND IT MAKES FOR A GOOD STORY. HANCOCK FOUND HIMSELF..I SAY LET'S SEE ANOTHER IMMORTAL SURFACE THAT LOSES HIMSELF IN A DIFFERENT WAY. HANCOCK FELT ABANDONED SO HE STOPPED LOVING HIMSELF AND JUST STOPPED CARING. WHAT IF WE SAW ANOTHER IMMORTAL LOSE HOPE IN PEOPLE IN SOCIETY AND THE RULES,MAYBE HE WAS HAPPY AND WANTED TO SETTLE DOWN WITH HIS OTHER AND SOMETHING TRAGIC HAPPENED THAT TOOK THAT AWAY FROM HIM.. FEEL THE UNFAIRNESS AND JUST SAY TO HELL WITH ALL THIS I'M MAKING MY OWN RULES DOING WHAT I WANT AND IF ANYONE TRIES TO STOP ME I'LL DESTROY YOU.

@Azazel

You couldn't be more wrong about Will Smith's stock.

Seven Pounds: 70 million (not bad for a movie that was critically panned)
Hancock: 228 million
I am Legend: 260 million
Persuit of Happyness: 163 million
Hitch: 180 million
Shark Tale: 160 million
I Robot: 144 million
Bat Boys II: 138 million

The dude has only had 3 movies sine 1996 fail to make 100 million dollars. Any actor would love to have box office numbers like that. He's a good actor, and his movies tend to be a lot of fun.

Why are they making this? Its just gonna be another one of those films thats just gonna wear out the superhero genre. Isn't there any better project film studios can invest in? Its not fair for people with original ideas who can't have their stuff made because sequels are being produced instead
