5 Movies Perfect For Your Halloween Horror Marathon

It’s that time of year again. The leaves are changing color, pumpkin spice is everywhere, and we finally have an excuse to shove candy in our faces and watch scary movies.

Even if horror movies aren't typically your thing, the genre has evolved enough over the years that you can probably find a scary movie that suits your liking. Here are five movies that make great Halloween-time viewing:

Halloween

Duh. As you can tell by the movie’s title, John Carpenter’s 1978 classic is synonymous with Halloween. If you’re in the mood for a slasher, Halloween is the way to go. While Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street are also great, Halloween’s theme music is enough to tip the scales in its favour. Also, the movie helped set the standard for an absurd string of sequels where the killer inexplicably can’t be killed. It’s a good time.

The Witch

A lot of people hate this movie. The common criticisms are that it’s pretentious, boring, and hard to understand. And while some of those are valid points, The Witch is still one of the most original horror movies to be released this decade. Director Robert Eggers expertly builds tension with creepy lingering shots of the woods and an unsettling soundtrack reminiscent of The Shining. If you can handle the period-accurate dialogue, this eerie New England folktale is worth a watch.

Shaun of the Dead

If you’re in the mood for something a little more fun, why not watch what’s probably the greatest horror comedy of all time. The first entry in Edgar Wright’s Cornetto Trilogy is a hilarious romp that combines witty humour, a good story, and gore that would make Greg Nicotero proud. Along with Zombieland, Shaun of the Dead is probably your best bet if you’re looking for an unconventional zombie movie.

Fright Night (2011)

This remake of the eighties classic is a bit of a forgotten gem. While it wasn’t a box office smash, the movie is still one of the more entertaining horror movies in recent memory. Anton Yelchin plays Charley, a teen who is forced to go to war against his new neighbor Jerry, who just happens to be a vampire. For me, the standout in this movie is David Tennant’s turn as over-the-top vampire slayer Peter Vincent. If you like Twilight jokes and want to see the Tenth Doctor in ridiculous leather pants, this is the movie for you.

The Others

So far we’ve checked serial killers, witches, zombies, and vampires off the list, so it’s time for a good old fashioned ghost story. The Others relies less on cheap jump scares than it does on creepy imagery and tension.  Director Alejandro Amenábar establishes the mood of the film from the start, and slowly builds to one of my favourite endings in movie history. The Others was the first scary movie I watched as a kid, and is still my favourite.

Some interesting choices you got there... I liked The Others. That dark victorian feel was utilized really well with a decent twist.

I think my 5 would have to be:

Halloween 1 & 2 (1978)- the originals of course... i know I'm cheating by putting them both, but they're classics.

The Evil Dead (1981) - such a great combo of goofiness, horror, and campy gore... its perfect for Halloween night. And Bruce Campbell is a national treasure.

The Exorcist (1973) - I put this here mainly because it was (and I think still is) one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. Linda Blair acted the shit outta that role.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) - this one is a little dated and raw... but man it's STILL pretty terrifying.

Pet Semetary (1989) - not one of the best King adaptations... but something about this one just really says Halloween to me. Maybe it's the undead black cat.

Honorable mentions:
The Conjuring 2 (2016)
The Shining (1980)
Freaks (1932)

I like all these movies, and I really like how disparate the tones between these are, mars for a good, diverse list.

That said, here are some further suggestions:

Trick R Treat is a silly, weird anthology type Halloween film that I personally really liked but may be a more acquired taste.

You're Next is a criminally overlooked home invasion/slasher type with one of my favorite horror movie protagonists of all time.

Drag Me To Hell is pretty great, though has a lot of gross out moments.

I love the whole Scream series, though admittedly 3 is a step down and 4 is a step up from 3 but gets a little too meta for my tastes.

What We Do In Shadows is a horror/comedy/mockumentary that everyone should see.

Furthermore: Trollhunter, Stitches, Pontypool, Grabbers, Ravenous, Stake Land, Apartment 143, Stage Fright, Almost Mercy, Wyrmwood, Hush, and A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night are lesser known Horror themed films that I think are pretty great.

Also, Happy Death Day is still in theaters and is really enjoyable! Scream meets Groundhog Day!

Or just watch Stranger Things. It takes up about the same amount of time.

@JPH152

Thank you. I might re-watch the "Fright Night" remake. And now I will seek "The Witch."
