BOX OFFICE: GHOSTBUSTERS Launches With Impressive $46.5 Million Opening But Likely Won't Reach #1

Ghostbusters has had a tough time of it, and even now some "fans" of the franchise continue to try and plot against the reboot by rigging its audience score on sites like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb. It's pretty pathetic, especially after mostly positive reviews for the Paul Feig helmed release. However, it doesn't appear as if those have been enough to help the movie reach the coveted #1 spot.

After earning a solid $17.2 million yesterday, Ghostbusters is on track for a solid opening weekend of $46.5 million. That's quite a bit higher than Sony's $38 million - $40 million estimates, and actually the biggest live-action opening since X-Men: Apocalypse was released back in May. It's also the second-highest live-action non-superhero film of the year behind only The Jungle Book, so it's done well!

Alas, none of that will push it to #1 as The Secret Life of Pets looks set to win the weekend with a massive $50 million. With a B+ CinemaScore, it should be interesting to see how Ghostbusters performs from here, especially as it cost a whopping $144 million to make. A Chinese release has been ruled out recently too, so the reboot has quite a way to go before anyone starts thinking of sequels.
