New Ghostbusters Live-Action Movie Reportedly In Development At Sony; Title And Writer Revealed

According to a new report, Sony Pictures is moving forward with another live-action Ghostbusters movie, and it sounds like the spook-hunting team will be encountering some Holiday-themed scares...

2024's Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire received mixed-to-negative reviews and grossed $202 million worldwide on a budget of $100 million, but Sony Pictures clearly still sees potential profitability in the franchise, and the studio is reportedly developing a new live-action movie.

According to Daniel Richtman, Sonic the Hedgehog writer Josh Miller is working on the script for Ghostbusters: Nightmare on 34th Street.

The scooper doesn't share any more details, but based on the title, there's obviously a good chance that the story will take place during the Holiday season. We assume the new movie will focus on the characters that featured in Afterlife and Frozen Empire, but nothing has been confirmed.

Afterlife featured the late Egon Spengler's (Harold Ramis) daughter Callie (Carrie Coon) and grandkids Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) and Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) forming a new team with Gary Grooberson (Paul Rudd), with support from Ghostbusters vets Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), and Janine Melnitz (Annie Potts) in Frozen Empire.

Earlier this year, Netflix unveiled the title and logo for its upcoming Ghostbusters animated series.

Ghostbusters: Night Shift is executive produced by Ben Hibon, Elliott Kalan, Jason Reitman, Gil Kenan, Amie Karp, and Dan Aykroyd. Reitman and Kenan co-wrote Sony Pictures' recent live-action movies, with the former directing Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Kenan taking the helm of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

Night Shift plot details are still under wraps, but Netflix did release the following blurb.

"The Ghostbusters are officially pulling an all-nighter. Ghostbusters: Night Shift, a series from Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation based on the beloved Ghostbusters franchise, will debut exclusively on Netflix in 2027. The new series marks the next chapter in the franchise’s ghoul-catching legacy, bringing supernatural comedy and paranormal action back to animation.

This isn’t the first time the Ghostbusters universe has gone animated. The 1980s and ’90s saw The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters take over the small screen. For now, you can rest assured: If there’s something strange in your neighborhood, a Ghostbuster will be on the job — even if it’s after hours."

"In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family decide to leave Summerville, Oklahoma and go back to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – and help the original Ghostbusters, who've developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level! But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes a mysterious and evil force, known as the Death Chill, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a deadly and unpredictable fate that unknowingly, could affect earth’s history with a second Ice Age."

Idk I feel like Ghostbusters is dead , do something new

@ShimmyShimmyYA - perhaps , I feel it’s more niche as a franchise now then it used to be though all it takes is one film.

Though as evidenced by recent films (atleast ones that aren’t purely horror) , people say they want original films but don’t really go see them.

@ShimmyShimmyYA - Same. I got what I wanted from Afterlife after the reboot nearly destroyed the series. But Frozen Empire didn’t really work for me. Not sure why.

@TheVisionary25 - that’s true , people do need to put words into aciton and support new shit for sure . I try to go see new idea movies along with franchise stuff cause someone has to support them

As far as GB, I’m sure someone out there has the next version of something that can be the ghostbusters of this era or maybe GB was just for the time it was made either way retreading the wheel isn’t gonna get us anywhere

@skyshark03191 - somethings just run their course it is what it is , Hollywood and audiences wanting every franchise to run forever is detrimental so many things we love were born out of new risks being taken
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 10/6/2026, 11:06 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - perhaps

As I said , it all depends on one take that can change the franchise for the better so I’m fine with them continuing to find that but yes as you said , making new stuff alongside it would be nice too.

@AgentofSH1ELD - I love GB and I didn't even bother to watch Frozen Empire. It took me just last year to finally sit down and watch Afterlife from beginning to end. While I enjoyed it, sad to say Ghostbusters is kind of "flailing" for attention but doesn't truly get the right sauce to make a new GB for new audiences.

The last one was really bad but not “franchise killer” bad. The sub plot with the ghost and Egon’s lesbian granddaughter (because, of course they’d go that route) was ridiculous and Rudd plays the same “nice guy” baffon in every movie.

They’d need to steer away from kids as leads (it’s obvious Stranger Things influenced the new ones) and get back to comedy horror and keep it in NYC. A great script can work (again, the last one wasn’t offensively bad) but it’s an uphill battle
skyshark03191
skyshark03191 - 10/6/2026, 10:42 AM
@Bucky74 - it worked in Afterlife but like Stranger Things, they leaned too much into it in FE.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 10/6/2026, 10:47 AM
@skyshark03191 - I liked Afterlife but it was missing that Bill Murray sarcastic wit and, obviously, NY, and took itself too seriously at times.

I'd love for them to adapt some of the enemies from the Real Ghostbusters. I've always thought that a movie where they were up against Sandman could lend itself to some cool and creative "dream/nightmare come to life" sequences. Samhain could be legitimately terrifying if done right.

The alleged title of this kind of reminds me of the episode where they ended up in the past and busted the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future before Ebenezer Scrooge was visited, and they accidentally destroyed Christmas. Whatever they do, I hope it's more coherent and cohesive than Frozen Empire, which had some things I liked but never really gelled as a whole for me.

@TheTyrantVirus - that sounds like a cool idea.

I liked Afterlife but never saw Frozen Empire but have heard similar opinions about it like yours from some so might check it out just out of curiosity at this point.

Frozen Empire is ALMOST as bad as the 2016 reboot or Ghostbusters 2. I hated it so much whereas I loved Afterlife so much. I'll still see it

Phoebe felt off in FE. I love her character so much in Afterlife. I like that thy finally branched out with different sectors essentially and new people but the movie was just blah. Afterlife was so special it kinda felt like amending to it all really instead of a new beginning.

This could be the third installment of the continuation series with Egon’s family but I had heard they were making an animated movie too so this could likely be that aswell but we’ll see…

Whatever it is , I like the title and a spooky & funny story set during Christmas should be fun so looking forward to learning more about it hopefully!!.

Also , I’m interested in that Night Shift animated series aswell which hopefully turns out well too.

Of the original two movies the one set at Christmas is the lesser one.

Of the legacy sequels the one with all the snow is the lesser one.

Loved the original films and the real ghostbusters… and actually didn’t mind GB afterlife but Frozen Empire was awful… They need a cast of adults… and needs to be in the same style as the original movie and widows bay.. which is ironic since the creator wrote GB Answer the call…

Hope we get something as remotely as good as Afterlife, if true. That was a great entry for the franchise.

I love this franchise but honestly not sold on the new cast. I'm ok with moving on from the old boys for sure but definitely don't feel the chemistry from this new group. Kinda ruins it for me.
