Netflix's Animated GHOSTBUSTERS Series Is Still Moving Forward According To FROZEN EMPIRE Director Gil Kenan

It appears that the animated Ghostbusters cartoon series being developed at Netflix isn't quite "dead" yet, despite being first announced back in 2022.

The director of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Gil Kenan, was recently interviewed by the Odeon Cinema-sponsored YouTube channel A Trip to the Movies with Alex Zane. The discussion primarily focused on the movie that is now playing in theaters, but it also touched on the Netflix animated season towards the end.

Check it out below. If you haven't watched the movie, skip to the 23:18 mark in the video since there are a lot of spoilers in the interview.

During the chat, Kenan stated, "It's very exciting, I just watched an entire presentation for the show. I've seen the sets and the environments and I just saw my first glimpse of a world of supernatural characters as realized by our brilliant creative team."

"All I can say is that the work is being done as we speak. It's in what we call, 'full development.' The scripts are being written and art is being created. It's a great time to be a Ghostbusters fan."

There haven't been many updates since the June 2022 announcement that revealed that Sony Animation and Netflix were collaborating on an animated Ghostbusters project. It seems the project may have been dormant for a while as Kenan has confirmed that the scripts are still being written.

Kenan is spearheading development on the series along with  Jason Reitman. Reitman directed 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife, while co-writing the script with Kenan.

The duo swapped places for Frozen Empire, with Kenan directing and co-writing the script with Reitman. It's likely that the pair's work on the live-action films have kept them from devoting much time to the animated series but it sounds as if that's set to change.

The Ghostbusters franchise is all about bustin' ghosts as the cult-classic, comedic 1984 supernatural film from Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis served as the launchpad for this enduring IP.

The lineup may change across projects but the core of any Ghostbusters production is usually a motley crew that chooses to start a ghost-catching business. These quirky individuals subdue ghosts, ghouls, and other supernatural entities with the use of specialized tools and vehicles.

Up to now, there have been five movies, including the two most current Kenan and Reitman productions, a 2016 all-female revival, and a 1989 sequel.

The franchise also has a couple of animated shows, including the beloved, The Real Ghostbusters which ran in the late 80s and early 90s. We'll also shoutout the sequel animated series, the Extreme Ghostbusters, which was criminally underrated.

@TheIronDuck - TRG got the ‘97 treatment in ‘97 when Extreme Ghostbusters first aired.

Wouldn’t mind a continuation of that though.

Cool!!.

I didn’t even know that there was an animated series in development so that’s new to me but i welcome it…

I could see it being “Real Ghostbusters”-esque in which it’s a canon version of the original teams adventures or perhaps a continuation of this series in which we follow the Spengler family & Rudd’s Gary as they try their hand at ghostbusting.

Either way, I’m down for it!!.

Continue Real Ghostbusters but use the movie cast. That would be different and fun. I know a lot of people would be mad at that idea but it would be cool.

Bring back Tara Strong as an older Kylie. Make it all canon.
