Ghostbusters: Afterlife was released last year to widespread acclaim, serving as the return to form for the franchise fans were hoping for. The movie tells the story of a single mom and her two kids who arrive in a small town, discovering their unexpected connection to the original Ghostbusters in the process (you can check out our 4* review by clicking here).
Today, MPC Film has shared some exclusive concept art and before and after stills from the movie. MPC Film VFX Supervisor Pier Lefebvre, DFX Supervisor Sebastien Raets, and VFX Producer Sarah Moussaif worked alongside Production VFX Supervisor Alessandro Ongaro to deliver Director Jason Reitman’s vision for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, with the Technicolor Art Department contributing to very early designs of Muncher, a ghost clearly inspired by everyone's favourite spook, Slimer.
They also explored designs for the new custom proton trap and its effect on the ghosts, though some of MPC Film's most iconic contributions to the Ghostbusters franchise were arguably the mini Stay-Puft marshmallows that cause chaos in Walmart. Incredible before and after photos show how they were added to Afterlife, and the team working on the movie hand animated each of them.
"Animating the Mini Stay-Puft scene was one of the moments when you remember why we want to be animators in the first place," explains Animation Supervisor Christophe Paradis. "Everyone’s ideas were on the table to choreograph the perfect combination of gruesome, evil, infantile, savage, clumsy, unhinged and funny, all while creating an identifiable twist of unique personality to each."
As well as the Mini-Pufts scene, MPC Film also worked on another, far more spoilery sequence that we'll be able to share some artwork from once Ghostbusters: Afterlife is released on Blu-ray!
