Cult 2001 werewolf movie Ginger Snaps is getting the small-screen treatment, with Killing Eve producer Sid Gentle Films and Copperheart Entertainment teaming up to develop the concept as a new TV series. The original's co-creator and director John Fawcett (Orphan Black) is on board as executive producer.
Ginger Snaps was a low budget Canadian horror about two sisters whose lives are drastically altered when one of them is bitten by a werewolf and begins a terrifying transformation. A logline for the series suggests that this new take will be sticking very close to the original premise.
"Ginger and Brigette are self-imposed outcasts in their hometown. Inseparable and fascinated with the macabre, they make a pact to escape their sleepy suburban home by sixteen or else take their own lives. But on the night of her first period, Ginger is attacked and infected by a werewolf which unleashes a monstrous kind of puberty. Brigette can’t understand this new version of her sister who is violent and sexual. As a bloody trail begins to form in Ginger’s wake, Brigette must find a way to curb her sister’s new cravings or risk losing her forever."
Anna Ssemuyaba (Guerilla) is writing the show, which is currently being shopped around to various networks.
“Could it be more socially relevant in this day and age to launch the television series, Ginger Snaps?,” Fawcett said. “For me, this is the ultimate follow-up to Orphan Black and I know those fans will find new love with the iconic Ginger and Brigette Fitzgerald. Anna Ssemuyaba is the perfect writer to help us bring our edgy, girl-power horror story to the small screen. I can’t wait for a big bite of this!”
The first movie (don't bother with the sequels) actually holds up pretty well, and is worth checking out this Halloween if you haven't seen it already. The werewolves look a bit crap (and did even for the time), but it's an engrossing yarn with strong performances and a vicious streak of black humor.
