Bright light!

We first reported on WB's plans to develop a Gremlins animated prequel series for the new WarnerMedia streaming service last year, and the show has now received a 10-episode series order.

Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai will be set long before the events of the '80s classic in 1920s Shanghai, and tell the story of a young Sam Wing (the store owner played by Keye Luke in the movies) and his adventures with Gizmo the Mogwai. The show will be written by Tze Chun and produced by Amblin Television in association with Warner Bros Animation.

Check out some key art below along with a synopsis, and let us know what you think in the comments.

Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.

I thought they were doing a new movie? Is this along with or instead of??

@Manmarvel - I let Zach Galligan at a con recently. He said the animated series is to introduce the franchise to a new generation and test to see if a new movie would be worth the investment.

@tBHzHomer - "introduce the franchise to a new generation"
But it says "adult-oriented" in THR's report..

@Nebula - there is an entire generation of adults that were born after this movie came out.

Hey Warner Bros.

Animated series, huh?

Not sure if the Gremlins can retain their "scariness" in animated form.

@L0RDbuckethead - I always took Gremlins as funny as opposed to scary, but maybe that's not the general consensus.

@tmp3 - That's true. There is quite a bit of cheesiness involved.

@tmp3 - They're funny in retrospect(especially the second one) but to a 5 year old, which I was at the time, they gave me a little fright.

Those adorable-looking little dangerous racals. 🤪

I wonder if they will keep that name, “WarnerMedia” for their streaming service.

@NinnesMBC - They were going to go with Warner+ but Dissney ripped them off.

@inkniron - First time I hear about that story, hmm.

@NinnesMBC - Yeah, it was right after they decided to steal DC's idea to use time travel in the MCU but just before they stole the idea for a multiverse. Those sneaky bastards.

so What will Gizmos name be in th Prequel?

inkniron - 7/1/2019, 2:13 PM
@IronGenesis - Good question. If they name him any variation of Gizmo though, I'll be a little pissed

I think the appeal of the gremmlins are the puppets
A cartoon or a cgi remake dont have the magic, but maybe im wrong

Too late WB....about 30 years too late. Do little kids even know what Gremlins is?

@MrDandy - my 8 year old daughter does, because I showed her the original on Netflix a couple weeks ago. She ordered a Gizmo plush before even seeing it, after I showed he pictures. She loves it. I have the second one on disc from Netflix right now waiting for a chance to watch it with her. She’d love the cartoon and a new movie, I’m sure.

If that silhouette is to be believed at least Gizmo's character model is going to look like those Funko Pop! figures. Which might be a good thing as far as I'm concerned, since I'm kind of tired of all the noodlearm models modern animation has adopted.

I’m really not sure why they’ve chosen to make this a prequel. Unless of course they are hoping to build up buzz to help push through a Gremlins 3

As long as the animation is good. There’s a 98% chance it will be mediocre art/animation to save money. Hardly ever any effort put into animation these days, primarily American animation

Another streaming service? They better absorb the DC service into this if they even hope to compete...

If they do it as an R-rated black-comedy...I'll watch it. Aside from that ...they can p!ss off! those are my terms.
