HALLOWEEN KILLS Trailer Hints At The Return Of A Divisive Plot Point From The Original Films

The new trailer for David Gordon Green's Halloween Kills was officially released online late last night, and it seemed to hint at the return of a significant plot point from the original movies...

We finally got a new trailer for Halloween Kills last night, and along with all the extreme violence, screaming and bloody mayhem, the teaser included a not-so-subtle hint that a divisive plot point from the original film series might be reintroduced.

No, we're not talking about the reveal that Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) is really Michael Myers' sister (that particular twist will likely stay dead and buried), but the possibility that "The Shape" may now be explicitly supernatural in nature.

The ending of John Carpenter's original made it very clear that Myers was far more than your average psychopathic serial killer when Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence) filled him with bullets to no avail. From there, the character began to embody an indestructible killing machine more in each sequel until things reached really silly levels in Halloween 6 with the introduction of a satanic cult.

David Gordon Green's 2018 revival appeared to dial things back to a degree and make Myers a normal - if very hard-to-kill - human being, but Laurie suggests that may not be the case in the trailer when she states that no "flesh and blood" man could have survived that fire, pointing out that "the more he kills, the more he transcends."

Is this simply a traumatized woman reaching the only conclusion she can in an effort to rally the people of Haddonfield to her cause, or will Halloween Kills make Michael Myers a literal boogeyman? We'll have to wait until August to find out for sure.

Minutes after Laurie Strode (Curtis), her daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) left masked monster Michael Myers caged and burning in Laurie’s basement, Laurie is rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, believing she finally killed her lifelong tormentor. But when Michael manages to free himself from Laurie’s trap, his ritual bloodbath resumes. As Laurie fights her pain and prepares to defend herself against him, she inspires all of Haddonfield to rise up against their unstoppable monster. The Strode women join a group of other survivors of Michael’s first rampage who decide to take matters into their own hands, forming a vigilante mob that sets out to hunt Michael down, once and for all. Evil dies tonight.

Halloween Kills slices its way into theaters this October.

The "first" in this new series was awesome, undoubtedly my favorite entry in the series, and possibly my favorite slasher movie of all time (maybe behind Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors). This trailer looks rad, so color me very, VERY excited. I agree some supernatural element is necessary for the character, but I hope they don't go over the top with details like they did with Halloween VI.

@BestAtWhatIDo - Yeah, in these slasher films with sequels, unless its an ultra realistic film where the killer just gets away unscathed every time, you pretty much have to have some kind of supernatural element for the killer to keep coming back. No can survive getting shot multiple times, stabbed, and caught in a burning building. Even of the fire doesn't kill you, the smoke inhalation would.

These types of movies aren't meant to he realistic in that sense, so you need a reason. Jason and Freddy are obviously driven by supernatural forces. It only makes sense that Michael is too.

@BestAtWhatIDo - Really? I like Halloween 2 more than the 2017 reboot. The story is clunky and slow. I thought the ending was stupid how that evil cop had to drive Mike Myer's to Laurie's home just because they wrote themselves into a corner by making all his kills random. Laurie's daughter and granddaughter have 0 chemistry or substance.

Nothing can match John Carpenter's original 2 (IMO). This new 1 feels like history is repeating itself with terrible sequels again....

Such a classic song and movie.

I’ve always viewed Myers are some sorta indestructible being, so i’m not that bothered. Unless it goes full on ‘this guy is literally Satan in human form’, then it’s fine
GhostDog

I took it as Laurie perceiving him as more than human because his feats are so ridiculously evil and incredible at times. Through fear and a deep understanding of his wickedness she magnifies his legend.

@BlackBeltJones - But he literally survives things no human can.

@CorndogBurglar - I think they tap into the nigh mythical abilities of Michael but I see that as the “it’s a movie” “movie slashers are unstoppable somehow” aspect. The last film was pretty grounded and realistic.

That being said, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was supernatural.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 6/25/2021, 7:26 AM
@BlackBeltJones - Well yeah. I grew up in the 80's and 90's during Freddy and Jason's hay day. You never needed any reason for Jason being unstoppable. He just was. But in the first movie it wasn't even Jason, it was his mom. In the 2nd one I believe he was beaten by getting hung from a rope in a barn, then disappeared for theblast shot. (A lot like Michael getting shot and disappearing). In 3 Jason died....like died died. Then I think 4 is where it started getting weird. Like he got struck by lightning and it brough him back to life. And then no one really cared after that. It was just accepted that he was like an undead killing machine.

@CorndogBurglar - technically Jason was some sort of Zombie that came back from the dead to avenge his mother - who was the actual murderer in the first film.

@CorndogBurglar - to be fair that was a different era. The over-the-top nature of those movies was perfectly in sync w the general attitude of the 80’s. Today’s horror eschews much of that in favor of grounding these characters in as much reality as possible.

CorndogBurglar

@Itwasme - Yeah I suppose that is true. They didn't really portray him as unstoppable in Friday the 13th part 2 though.
Itwasme
Itwasme - 6/25/2021, 11:59 AM
@CorndogBurglar - to be fair, in the first one he could have just been a burned guy who really loved scuba diving, and all he wanted to do was to show that nice girl what he loved about the lake. They left the ending a bit ambiguous... :)

Slashers have such a small amount of story to offer to justify sequels most if the time so the killers always get supernatural
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 6/25/2021, 6:42 AM
@Twenty23Three - I don't think its their lack of backstory as the fact that they take so much punishment that they NEED a reason for being able survive what no other person can.

For instance, Jason's story didn't really change at all for something like 7 movies before they gave him an explanation for being indrstructible. We just kept seeing him die, then getting brought back to life in the beginning of the next movie. One time his corpse got struck by lightning and thats what brought him back. Just some random event. His story itself always stayed the same. All anyone needed to know was that he was a deformed kid that died at camp because the counselors were too busy screwing around.

Same with Freddy. Sure we knew he was supernatural from the first movie. But his story never really changed until the last one, and all they really did was show the 3 little demon things that gave him his powers.

People go see these movies to see a larger than life slasher kill people. The backstory of the killers doesn't need to be some over dramatic thing. It just needs to give them their motivation, and thats ehat carries them through all the sequels.

Reading this I just realized a direction this series should take. The military comes in, scoops Mike up into a container ship attached to a helicopter, and tries to haul him off to get analyzed by scientists only for all in the facility getting killed. During all of this, some terrorist group does something bad on the other side of the planet. Knowing the Grade A killing weapon that they have on their hands the military scoops Senor Myers back up, and drops him off in the middle of the terrorists' camp. Zany hijinks ensue.

The Squeakquel could be the terrorist returning DJ Mikey Hack-N-Slash back to the US military at one of their bases.

I don't know if it would work. I've only seen like two of these things. Heck, maybe they already did it and I don't know. Thoughts?

@plasticman - I'm waiting for the Star Trek crossover where Captain Kirk (Shatner) finally acknowledges that his evil was inspiration for the mask - and he has to atone for impregnating 100's of alien females on the original 5 year (e)mission.

@plasticman - my pitch is “slasher avengers” : Freddie, Jason, Leatherface, Michael, and Chucky all teaming up to destroy a small town

I've never seen that as a a 'divisive plot point'.

If the character had LESS than a supernatural/preternatural element we wouldn't be talking about him all these years later.

Based on the first movie, I don’t see them making Michael Myers supernatural in this trilogy.

I think we could expect to see him get killed off in the third movie.

Loved the first one. The only thing that bugged me was David Gordan Green talking about how were going back to the simplicity of the first one, but yet still having Michael with over the top kills and a form of superhuman strength. I think it could have benefited from a much more subtle approach like the original. Showing Michael less is definitely a good thing. But none the less BRING IT ON!

the 2018 movie OPENED with a hint of the supernatural with the whole mental yard (even the dog) feeling the pull of evil when the mask was shown. This is fine and was alluded to already.

Don't see the problem.

The PROBLEM will arise if they try and explain why he's like that. Like the reason most villains or heroes who were mysterious are now boring when you find out their "origin".

As long as they don't try to explain the supernatural, we're good. No Curse of Michael Myers vibes please

A big, strong and heavily armed man like him could have easily broken through the thin wooden roof of the basement, it's not hard to picture him escaping the fire. His overall feats would seem supernatural to most people though; ej. his pain tolerance is freakishly high.

They could have revealed his mask originally came from Silver Shamrock.
