HORROR REVIEW: It Follows (2014)

A film revolving around a young woman who's followed by a supernatural force after a sexual encounter. Will it follow you next?

Oh boy, this film. I've heard a lot about this film on sites such as Bloody-Disgusting and had little to no interest in it when I first heard about it. It centers around a girl who is followed by a supernatural force after having a sexual encounter, and while that's an interesting concept, I'll tell you why I feel it falls flat. We open the film with a girl who suddenly flees her home without explaining what has happened and drives to a cliff. At the cliff, she jumps to her death.

Ouch
The film's main star, Jay, has sex with her boyfriend in his car on the 2nd date. Before this, they went to the movies where he sees a woman which Jay can't see. After that, is when people start to follow her. They can be anyone, from a complete stranger, to someone you love, a family member etc. The only way to pass this "curse" along is to sleep with someone else, and if the entity manages to kill the person you sleep with, it also kills you. It doesn't show who the boyfriend is with before he passes it on to Jay (nor does it even imply WHO it could be) and the film also doesn't show the entity actually killing anyone.

What we do know is that SOMETHING is following Jay. It scares her out of a class. It follows her, her sisters, the brother(?) and the new guy Greg to the lakehouse where she takes off in a car and breaks her arm. Good ol Greg gets the curse after he sleeps with her in the hospital room. What a stud. When I think of romance, I think of knocking some chick up in her hospital bed (with a broken arm, mind you). I mean, where were the nurses or doctors when this was taking place? Was she not hooked up to a monitor so the staff could see her vitals? These are questions that need answering, people!

Speaking of the other guy with Jay, it's never really explained whether or not Paul is her brother or just a friend. He's always in Jay's house and he and Jay had a conversation on the couch where it's revealed that Paul's first kiss was with his sisters. Did he kiss Kelly (the sister that's actually shown to be her sister) and Yana? Did he kiss Jay at some point when he was younger? They're always together so I got really confused about their relevance to the plot, Wikipedia (lol I had to do research) tells me that only Kelly was Jay's sister. Okay, how bad is it that Wikipedia knows this information but it's never ONCE hinted at during the entire film?

Going along with the idea that you need to have relations with someone else to pass the curse along, Jay strips down on a beach and ventures out where there's a boat with 3 guys on it. You dont see what happens, but we all know what happens, and this is where the movie should of taken a left turn and had the entity show up randomly afterwards. Afterwards she finally ends up sleeping with Paul, and Greg (the new guy) meets his demise after the entity takes the presence of himself, then his mother, taking him out. Again, if you're passing the curse along to someone else, why are you STILL seeing the entity in general?

At the end of the film they decide it's time to fight back and lure the entity into a pool with the hopes of electrocuting it. That's all well and good but how in the hell are you going to take out an entity just like that? It shows up in the appearance of Jay's father and starts to throw the electrical devices at her. Paul has a gun (and for some strange reason, CAN'T see the entity) and accidentally shoots Yana. They finally throw a sheet over the spirit, get it into the pool where it meets it's demise via gunshot wound (maybe). The ending shows Paul passing some prostitutes and then Paul and Jay walk down the street holding hands as someone follows them.

All and all, this was a so so film. It was majorly overhyped as one of the best horror films of the year but I disagree. It had it's moments and a fresh change of pace in horror is always good, but when they don't captialize on some things it can cause a movie to fall flat. The entity should of killed the boyfriend in the beginning, they should of had the first girl talk about it with someone. Will we get a sequel and or prequel to establish just how the curse got started? I honestly hope, because if this is all we get, it would be a sad day in horror. I give it a 3 out of 5.

Oh and Jay's boyfriend looks like Joshua Jackson from Dawson's Creek if his career had gone into a tail spin.

@Dead2009

You know what I find creepy....the four teams in your profile picture are four of my five favorite teams. Orioles, Ravens, Sharks and Terrapins. That is frigg'n creepy.

@Dead2009 - I grew up on Ft. Meade. I still remember getting to see Cal Ripkin Jr. in his prime. While I don't live in Maryland anymore, I am still a huge fan of their sports teams. As to why I chose the Sharks, I really can't remember. Just a fan since I was a kid.

After reading your review I wonder why this film got such good reviews when it was first released.
