IT CHAPTER TWO Opening Weekend Numbers Aren't Quite Living Up To The First Instalment

IT Chapter Two is now playing in theaters, but it doesn't appear as if the two-and-a-half-hour sequel is performing quite as well as its predecessor in terms of box office takings. Read on for details...

IT massively exceeded expectations at the box office back in 2017, and while the sequel is set to take the #1 spot this weekend, IT: Chapter Two isn't outperforming the first movie's opening.

With an opening day total of $37.4 million, it's thought that the Stephen King adaptation will end the weekend with around $90 million. That's an impressive haul and definitely not a number to be sniffed at, but it's also $23 million less than its predecessor. However, reviews haven't been as positive for the follow-up (it has 65% on Rotten Tomatoes compared to 86% for the first).

Throw in that mammoth running time and it's no great surprise that the horror sequel isn't exactly exceeding expectations. On the plus side, these numbers mean that IT: Chapter Two will have the second-highest horror movie opening weekend of all-time, topping last year's Halloween revival.

Internationally, the sequel is performing well, so there's a very good chance that Warner Bros. and New Line will want to move forward with more movies revolving around Pennywise, even though the novel has now been fully adapted.

Did you guys decide to watch IT: Chapter Two this weekend?

Well, the film didn't live up to the first one either.
Still OK.
Opening scene was painful to watch, even though I knew it was coming.

IT: Chapter Two wasn't as good as Chapter One, but guess what, the second half of the book wasn't as interesting as the first half either. I wasn't expecting this to be better than the first one, I just wanted a satisfiying conclusion to this story and I got that. It was funny, sometimes creepy and quite emotional towards the ending. Overall a solid rap-up to one of the most iconic horror stories of all time. Chapter Two - 7/10

@WakandanQueen - agreed 100%. Pennywise actor still great that cant be emphasized enough. His power levels super confusing. Also the ritual of chud didnt live up to the book canon in my head.

(Spoiler Warning) Just back from the movie. Felt like Zack Snyder's 'Watchmen', WB clearly bailed on the idea of giant inter-dimensional turtles.

Al the actors did a great job and the film was devoted (too much) to the source material. A flashback scene showing 'It' meeting and devouring Robert Gray would've been a great addition, missed opportunity.

The first had serious marketing behind it. Part 2 hit theaters without so much as a whisper. Most people don't know its out and weren't expecting it this far ahead of Halloween.

Just got out of a showing for IT 2. It was a really sloppily constructed film. The first movie’s script was super refined and tight. This new movie is just sort of all over the place.

And I was reading a lot of early reviews for the film where people say “Bill Hader steals the show! He should get nominations!” And while he was one of the best parts of the film, it’s just Bill Hader being Bill Hader screaming “[frick] you!” at everyone else.

I liked this film very much. Except the climax, that was really...not impressive.

Acting was great. Bill Hader and James Ransone were wonderful in this film and true standouts. Bill is one of my favorite actors but I want Ransone to get bigger roles after this. I'm rooting for him ever since Sinister.
