IT massively exceeded expectations at the box office back in 2017, and while the sequel is set to take the #1 spot this weekend,
IT: Chapter Two isn't outperforming the first movie's opening.
With an opening day total of $37.4 million, it's thought that the Stephen King adaptation will end the weekend with around $90 million. That's an impressive haul and definitely not a number to be sniffed at, but it's also $23 million less than its predecessor. However, reviews haven't been as positive for the follow-up (it has 65% on Rotten Tomatoes compared to 86% for the first).
Throw in that mammoth running time and it's no great surprise that the horror sequel isn't exactly exceeding expectations. On the plus side, these numbers mean that
IT: Chapter Two will have the second-highest horror movie opening weekend of all-time, topping last year's
Halloween revival.
Internationally, the sequel is performing well, so there's a very good chance that Warner Bros. and New Line will want to move forward with more movies revolving around Pennywise, even though the novel has now been fully adapted.
