IT Prequel Series WELCOME TO DERRY Will Reportedly Feature Bill Skarsgård As Pennywise

Though unconfirmed, reports are coming in that the planned HBO Max It prequel series, Welcome To Derry, will feature the return of Bill Skarsgård as the demonic clown known as Pennywise...

We recently learned that Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane had been enlisted as co-showrunners for the planned HBO Max It prequel series, with the movies' director Andy Muschietti expected to join them as EP and possibly helm at least one episode (likely the premiere).

Now, some more details on the project have been revealed by The Illuminerdi (via FearHQ.com), and it sounds like Welcome To Derry may share more than a few plot points with Stephen King's classic horror novel.

According to the site, the show will be set in the '60s, and is currently casting a Black male lead in their 30s to play a patriotic Army pilot who is "trying to bring people together in an unlikely time." The production is also searching for young actors to play a group of friends, who sound an awful lot like they'll be introduced as a sort of  "proto" take on the Losers Club.

Most interestingly - and this lines up with something we've also heard - Bill Skarsgård will reportedly reprise the role of Pennywise the Clown from the films.

We still don't have any official plot details for Welcome To Derry, but the show will almost certainly delve into the origins of the demonic creature who is believed to have been terrorizing the town for a very long time, and may even take us back to when he first arrived on Earth.

What do you guys make of this idea? Is Welcome To Derry sounding a little too much like a retread of the original story in a different time-period? Drop us a comment down below.

It 2 was [frick]ing terrible and made me kinda dislike this version of pennywise. Too much CGI.

@AmazingFILMporg - Another prequel...

@AmazingFILMporg - Chapter 1 was certainly the better film, but I much prefer Chapter 2 actually. But I agree, the over-use of CGI just took away the horror most of the time.

@MosquitoFarmer -

The problem with It is that it borrows alot from the conjuring universe. Which is made by the same studio.

Cheap jump scares!

Wacky camera work to distract you from the fact nothing interesting is going on!

Bad CGI!!!

Random chase scenes that make no sense cause the villain can easily kill the hero but doesn't cause the film will be over.

No atmosphere.

These films feel overly produced soulless garbage 💁

@AmazingFILMporg - The 2nd part was always the weaker part of the story. It sucked in the original version to the flash Mack’s were the only actual interesting part. I blame that more on the story SK made than the adaptation it just never had a strong ending

@Ha1frican -

I blame the awful CGI, the terrible CGI kid flashbacks and awful writing and unnecessary runtime

@AmazingFILMporg - I thought chapter 2 was a big step down from the first, but I still enjoyed it. But yes, they put too much Pennywise in so that he kind became less effective than in 1

@AmazingFILMporg - Alright, well, that's harshing on my opinion...
Kidding, but for real, the scenes with the younger actors didn't make a whole lot of sense circumstantially, given that they took place during or before the events of the first film, and that just made it wonky. But I very much enjoyed the adult cast. Again the first was certainly better, but I personally enjoy the second more after the fact, even if Muschetti got too cocksure after the success of Chapter 1.

No one is asking for this outside of executives sitting around thinking of ways to make money without even really trying or creating anything new

@JackRussoff3 - Actually I have been quite open about a television series. Even with 2 films it didn't cover half of the book, and arguably left all the truly interesting and terrifying stuff out.

Considering how many king stories involve Maine or derry specifically, it'd be cool if it was basically a prequel to the king verse in general.

It was just a terribly unscary film. Never bothered with 2. Don't understand the hype.

IT Chapter 2 was pretty mid but the first one was great. If it’s more in line with the first film, in terms of quality, then I’m down… but the sequel did kind of ruin any excitement I would have.

Should be set before the 60's. Basically just sounds like the first half of the first movie.
FASELI
FASELI - 11/16/2022, 4:21 PM
@sully - You can only use specific time periods as It only awakes every 27 to 30 years. Probably gone for the 60s as it's more cost effective sadly.

Character has been around for ages. It's not a bad idea to explore the town he terrorized more. Could be a cool anthology series if they go that route like Fargo.

This sounds like a FREDDY’S NIGHTMARES anthology deal, where Pennywise appears to introduce the monster of the week. That show was terrible, but Tales from the Darkside and Tales from the Crypt did a good job.
