We got word earlier this year that 28 Days Later director (Danny Boyle) and writer (Alex Garland) are set to re-team for a series of sequels to the 2002 horror hit, and the first cast members have now been officially announced.

According to Deadline, Jodie Comer (Killing Eve, Free Guy), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass, Kraven the Hunter) and Ralph Fiennes (the Harry Potter and James Bond franchises) have signed on to play the lead roles in the first film of the planned trilogy.

Comer and Feinnes had previously been rumored to be in talks along with Charlie Hunnam, but there's no mention of the Rebel Moon actor in the trade's report, so it's possible Taylor-Johnson ended up nabbing the male lead.

The original movie’s star, Cillian Murphy, is on board as a producer, and has indicated that he would be interested in reprising the role of Jim.

28 Days Later was a massive success, and already spawned one less well-regarded (but still well worth watching) follow-up in 2007's 28 Weeks Later. Boyle and Garland were only involved as executive producers on that project, so a lot of fans are sure to view this new movie as the first true sequel.

Boyle will helm the first instalment, while Nia DaCosta (The Marvels) was recently announced as the second film's director. The plan is to shoot both back-to-back. Garland will write all three, and the budget for each movie is said to be in the $75 million range.

The first film starred Murphy as a man who wakes from a coma after a bicycle accident to find that England has been overrun by "The Infected." The virus turns its victims into raging killers, but unlike the usual "zombies," these creatures can move with frightening speed. The man then sets out to learn what's been going on, meeting fellow survivors played by Naomie Harris and Brendan Gleeson along the way, as well as a deranged army major played by Christopher Eccleston.

Plot details for 28 Years Later are still under wraps, but the timeframe would suggest that it will take place in a near-future setting, which means the movie might lean more towards sci-fi than straight-up horror.

"A group of misguided animal rights activists free a caged chimp infected with the "Rage" virus from a medical research lab. When London bike courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up from a coma a month after, he finds his city all but deserted. On the run from the zombie-like victims of the Rage, Jim stumbles upon a group of survivors, including Selena (Naomie Harris) and cab driver Frank (Brendan Gleeson), and joins them on a perilous journey to what he hopes will be safety."

The lack of Cillian news is concerning.

@thedrudo - he is open to returning, and if he's producing I think they can work something out

@bkmeijer1 - if not for this first one than maybe for the second and third. Use this one to set the tone and get things moving then introduce him again during the second at some point.

@Deklipz - I could see him show up in the third act or as a character they meet along the way. Don't think he'll be the protagonist, but he could indeed be in a later movie

@bkmeijer1 - I’d be cool with that. He’s a phenomenal actor

@Deklipz - agreed. About time he got the spotlight (and recognition with an award) in Oppenheimer

@bkmeijer1 - Hopefully the first of many. He’s one of the finest working actors today. Throughout Peaky Blinders you can see him carry the weight of the events on his character from season to season and even episode to episode sometimes. There aren’t a whole lot of actors that can do that.

@Deklipz - haven't really watched Peaky Blinders past season 2, but I agree he's great at showing stuff like that. He already did that in 28 Days Later

@bkmeijer1 - True. I point out Peaky though because there’s sometime as much as 2 years between seasons and he comes back to it without loosing a beat.

@Deklipz - S1 and 2 did feel very much like it followed it each other up without a break. That's impressive. Both on Murphy's (& the rest of the cast's) and the writing team's part

@bkmeijer1 - It really is, everyone does a stellar job on it. And Tom Hardy gives one of my favorite performances of his as well.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 4/28/2024, 5:44 AM
@Deklipz - Hardy was initially the reason I was gonna watch it, but I kinda forgot about him with the rest of the cast/characters being great too

@bkmeijer1 - The entire cast is goddamned amazing. You should slot it into your viewing schedule, you won’t regret it

@Deklipz - I could since the show in finished as far as I know, but I have to try and fit it in the already huge backlog.

@bkmeijer1 - It’s actually got a movie filming at the end of the year to wrap things up but you won’t be disappointed whenever you do slot it in

Great, another role where Jodie is defined by her man and getting serious trauma over it.

Typecast!

I'll give it a shot. I don't know why.

That's a solid cast. I'm interested to see where this is going, although I wish they made a 28 Moths Later first. Although I guess if it's a trilogy, they might still do so
