Josh Boone's THE STAND Will Now Be Four Movies Instead Of One

Legendary horror writer Stephen King hinted to MTV that Josh Boone's film adaptation of The Stand might be more than a three-hour-long movie, and now Boone has confirmed that it will actually be a quartet.

Josh Boone ("The Fault In Our Stars"), was a recent guest on Kevin Smith’s Hollywood Babble-On podcast. During the conversation, Boone was asked about his adaptation of Stephen King's good vs. evil novel, The Stand, which Boone has been writing the script for and will direct. First he addressed the issue of compressing King's 1000 page book into a single, three hour movie. Boone accomplished this feat by utilizing a non-linear (out of chronological order) narrative technique. Boone went on to explain, "You open with Mother Abigail dying and sending the guys off, and then you jump back in time."

Boone says it took him five months to finish the script. Everyone loved it. The studio estimated that it would cost $87M, which is a lot of money for a film with no set pieces and falls into the horror-drama genre. You would think Warner Bros. might have been skittish about making the film once the budget was figured out but they surprised Boone with a more ambitious suggestion.
"They came back and said “would you do it as multiple films?” and I said “[frick] yes!” I loved my script, and I was willing to drop it in an instant because you’re able to do an even truer version that way. So I think we are going to do like four movies. I can’t tell you anything about how we’re going to do them, or what’s going to be in which movie. I’ll just say we are going to do four movies, and we’re going to do THE STAND at the highest level you can do it at, with a cast that’s going to blow people’s minds. We’ve already been talking to lots of people, and have people on board in certain roles that people don’t know about. We’re looking to go into production next year, maybe in the spring." - Josh Boone

One man escapes from a biological weapon facility after an accident, carrying with him the deadly virus known as Captain Tripps, a rapidly mutating flu that - in the ensuing weeks - wipes out most of the world's population. In the aftermath, survivors choose between following an elderly black woman to Boulder or the dark man, Randall Flagg, who has set up his command post in Las Vegas. The two factions prepare for a confrontation between the forces of good and evil.

"Skiddish"?

@ mobile1ph it's obvious you have not seen how big the real version of that book is. The only single book I've seen that is longer is the bible. They already made a tv mini series. 1st movies is captain trips. 2nd movie is the road to bolder and the betrayal. Then I bet the split the last act in to two movies. Part1 will be the ongoings at New Babylon and the guys walking out. Part2 will be the final showdowe with Flag. This is going to be awesome.

I think four might just be a BIT excessive, but I was really interested in the feat of compiling all if it in one three hour movie.

I think a trilogy would've done.

@phronesis agreed. 3 movies would have been fine

Four movies sounds like a lot, but if the source material actually justifies that many hours - why not? [insert angry remark about the Hobbit trilogy] I didn't watch the mini series back then, I always wanted to read it.

Throw in Legolas and push it to six movies. Might as well.

Spreading the...run time of a movie to fit four movies which I guess is justified considering the lenghth of the book. I don't know, have yet to read the book.

Why not a 10 part mini series on HBO? Production quality would be fantastic, they'd get great talent and don't have to worry about making this a viable product to put in theatres.

At least this isn't like when Peter Jackson took a book and made 3 movies which in total will take longer to watch than it would take an adult to read the book.

@dellamorte1872

Which would you say are the two best? I haven't read much from King, can't even say why. A friend borrowed me 'Under the Dome' earlier this year, but I couldn't really get into it and put it aside after, idk, less than 100 pages or so.

This may be another John Carter situation waiting to happen. The Stand was terrific and influential in it's day--but we've seen this stuff over and over so many times now, there's no way it can be made fresh enough to fill four feature length films.

I think a trilogy would fair better than 4 three-hour films. At least they have 4 chances to get the story-line right. Looking forward to a Gary Sinise cameo.

I.E: Potter, Twilight, LOTR are all finished and now it is time to find the next big HIT. As a fan of the book and King this is WONDERFUL news as we now have a chance to get an epic movie done on an epic scale.

From what I understand this was how the original LOTR trilogy came about. Jackson was supposed to do one or two but after scripting, the studio request him to film three at once (I am paraphrasing. There are parts of that that may be wrong)

What's with all these movies getting split in parts? I know it's a long book, but c'mon 4 parts is just ridiculous.

@nailbiter111

I read the uncut version.
Damn good book.

I think four movies is the best way to tell the story right.
They need at least three movies.

One would be an impossibility without a RADICAL makeover.

They should've just made a big budget TV miniseries instead of four movies... Oh wait.
