THE DARK TOWER Prime Video(?) Series In The Works From DOCTOR SLEEP Director Mike Flanagan

Big news for fans of Stephen King's The Dark Tower novels here, as it's been confirmed that a new take on the sprawling tale is in development from Doctor Sleep and Midnight Mass director Mike Flanagan.

"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed."

We've been hearing whispers that a new take on The Dark Tower might be in the works for a while, and Deadline is now reporting that a small-screen adaptation of Stephen King's popular saga from Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy’s Intrepid Pictures is in development.

The project will likely end up on Amazon's Prime Video streaming service, but it sounds like a destination hasn't been 100% decided upon just yet.

Flanagan, who brought us the likes of Doctor Sleep, Gerald's Game, Midnight Mass and the Haunting of Netflix shows, has been hoping to get a new version of the classic tale off the ground for years, and now has the opportunity after acquiring the rights to the sprawling fantasy/sci-fi/horror/western book series from King himself.

While speaking to the trade, Flanagan outlined his ambitious plans for The Dark Tower, which include up to five seasons and (potentially) two features to wrap-up the story.

"I wrote a pilot, we view it as a series that’s going at least five seasons. And having lived with this project as long as I have, I have an enormous amount of it worked out in my brain. But I have a pilot script I’m thrilled with and a very detailed outline for the first season and a broader outline for the subsequent seasons. I think eventually, if we’re able to get it going, there are some other writers I want to fold into that process whom I’ve worked with before; I think they would be really fabulous for a very small, intimate writers room where we can continue to break it.

I’ll tell you, more than half of my life, I’ve closed my eyes and been able to watch a lot of this play out, I’ve dreamed about this. That first shot which comes right off at the first incredible sentence of the first book, The Gunslinger, I’ve had that image just rattling around in my head since I was an undergrad. It’s going to have to get out of there eventually, I really need to get it out of my head. The pilot script is one of my favorite things I’ve ever gotten to work on. It’s been surreal working on that. So we’ve been floored and grateful that Stephen King trusts us with such an undertaking, something so precious to him, and we hope to find the right partners to realize it."

There have been several previous attempts to get an adaptation of The Dark Tower off the ground, and one actually came to fruition back in 2017 via a movie starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. Unfortunately, it was not very well-received critically or commercially, stopping a potential franchise dead in its tracks.

What do you guys make of this news? Have you read King's novels? Drop us a comment down below.

I hope that either King has a significant level of control or that Flanagan respects what he would want. Mike Flanagan is the titty shit by the way. Dude rocks.

@ObserverIO - Eh.....Stephen King has never cared if movies of his stories are destroyed and terrible.

What we need is someone who is not only a fan of the story, but knows it inside and out and plans to respect it.

If they aren't willing to do that then this will just end up as another horrible adaptation like the last time.

The first book should be pretty easy to adapt, but after Roland starts leaping through doors into people’s heads, it can get weird. So much of that stuff is thoughts, which doesn’t always translate well into film.

@Saintsinnister - It’s fantasy. If viewers can’t get into weird stuff, they’re proud watching the wrong show. 😂

@RolandD - That’s not what I’m saying. It’s not weird in a fantasy way, it’s weird in that it relies heavily on thoughts and emotions, sometimes by two people at the same time. It works well as a book, but I can imagine it getting lost in the interpretation into film.

Please don't be like Amazon's adaptations of Wheel of Time or Lord of the rings. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy them both for what they are, but the source material is pretty much thrown out the window, and we already have Idris Elba's Dark Tower, so we don't need a "based on" version.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 12/9/2022, 11:39 AM
@JosiltonParking - The sad thing is the Idris Elba version wasn't "based on" the books. It was the continuation. It was the next step of Roland's story after he reached the tower in the books.

Which is why some of their decisions made even less sense lol.

Having said that, they need to do the books justice and make a faithful adaptation. Period.

I hope he can do this and make it as epic as it should be. I really enjoyed the dark tower book series. It was very derivative, but in a self aware way, which probably doesn't land as well with some people. That said, whatever that movie with Matthew and Idris was, was NOT the Dark Tower at all. Should have said it was inspired by the Dark Tower. I couldn't finish it, it was so bad.

@Shivermetimbers - That movie was so bad. And to think it was supposed to be the continuation of the books lol

Quick correction, man. It's not at Amazon. Mike said he's spoken to them about it and while it very well could end up there, he might shop it around to other studios. It's still in early development atm.

@rexlincoln - Right. Flanagan’s company has the rights, not Amazon although he said it is possible it will wind up there. Funny thing was that before this news came out yesterday I saw a story with the writer speculating that TDT could wind up on Amazon with Flanagan moving to the streaming service. The writer must have assumed that Amazon still had the rights from when they were developing a pilot that never saw the light of day.

I am so excited for this. Flanagan is a fan so I have high hopes that he will stay true to the source material.

If it is Amazon, exciting but concerning given they already passed on Glen Mazarras incredible pilot and vision citing ‘too expensive’ among other things. Weird that they’d just restart again on something they’ve already said no to, after pumping money into making it.
RolandD
RolandD - 12/9/2022, 11:17 AM
@CLTMAN29 - Flanagan has the rights, not Amazon. Hopefully they will want to do this with their new auteur and allow him the freedom to do it his way. That said, he could offer this to other services. Hopefully not Netflix since they are so cancel happy.

@RolandD - Regardless who has the rights, I'm just saying its interesting Amazon are again commiting to a show they've already poured money into and passed. My concern is this is a cheaper way to it.

Hes the right guy. I hope if this happens it gets a better ending though...book 6 and 7 went down hill bad.

Just do a straight up adaptation of The Gunslinger, no more prequels. No need for Roland to tell the story in Wizard and Glass until they get to that point in the main story.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 12/9/2022, 11:44 AM
@soberchimera - Exactly. There's no reason to tell any stories that aren't already in the main 7 books.

Little Sisters of Eluria. Wind in the Keyhole. We don't need to hear about King Roland in Eyes of the Dragon. None of that is necessary.

Just stick to the main books. That's it.
BigDriggs
BigDriggs - 12/9/2022, 1:21 PM
@CorndogBurglar - I agree about eyes of the dragon but, wind through the keyhole and little sisters would be great to see.

CorndogBurglar - 12/9/2022, 2:10 PM
@BigDriggs - They would be great to see! But they aren't really necessary either.
BigDriggs
BigDriggs - 12/9/2022, 6:04 PM
@CorndogBurglar - Ha! True, just me being greedy. As long as they stay faithful to the books, I'd be ok with it if they skipped over keyhole and little sisters and just did the 7 novels
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 12/9/2022, 6:09 PM
@BigDriggs - It would be hard to do just the novels too though. What about Ted Braughtigan? Or Father Callahan? Or all the things you learn in books like Insomnia, Desperation, and Black House?

It's so tricky lol.
RolandD
RolandD - 12/9/2022, 11:19 AM
While I want Flanagan to get the story right, perhaps even more important to me is getting the characters right, especially the ka-tet of Roland and his companions.

@RolandD - I always wondered if your name was for Roland Deschain. I figured it was, but you never know

I'm a huge fan as well. I think with Dark Tower, the story is just as important as getting the characters right. I know it won't be able to be a 1:1 adaptation because there's just way too much going on. But any changes made need to make sense. For instance, I can understand if they put Stephen King in as a character. But they would still need to meet SOMEONE to fill that role.

It's also interesting to see how they will use characters from other non-Dark Tower books, like Father Callahan from Salem's Lot. Do they need to make spin-offs of those books to introduce us to some of those characters so they aren't just random people popping in out of no where?

I don't know. It gets tricky.

Hell yeah, I can't think of anyone better to do helm the Dark Tower. Now cast Michael Shannon as Roland and we got ourselves a stew going.

Demigods
Demigods - 12/9/2022, 2:58 PM
@CurlyBill - You know... that would not have been my first casting choice... like at all... But I could really see him nailing the role, actually.

Pretty solid casting choice
CurlyBill
CurlyBill - 12/9/2022, 5:29 PM
@Demigods - The thing that always stuck out to me was the book flat out describes Roland as having a weathered face and being sorta ugly. I've always liked that, Roland isn't prince charming, he's a gunslinger who has sacrificed many things including his looks to reach the Dark Tower.

Now no disrespect to Shannon, but he does have very unique facial features that I think would really sell the weathered look of Roland
Demigods
Demigods - 12/9/2022, 9:40 PM
@CurlyBill - I dont think that I'd say he's ugly, or anything's but he's not the modelesque looking paragon of masculinity you'd expect from a fantasy novel.
Michael Shannon has the acting chops to pull of the intensity of Roland to a Tee! The dude is a great actor.
Like I said, he wouldn't have been my first choice, but now that you say it... damned did that grow on me. I like it my dude! good shit! That's such an awesome fanciest! I hope it becomes a reality.
