I loved the original but honestly neither one actually makes a lick of sense. How The Thing itself operates is made up from scene to scene. I mean they say first that it absorbs someone and then replicates them right? We see it in the process of doing it to one guy..then all of a sudden another guy who was with the group the whole time is a Thing..when was he absorbed and replicated? It appears to take time. Then he dies and suddenly its another guy! And do they replicate their cloths? Or take time to wipe and dry all of the slime off them?

Why do we even feel the need to compare the two? At least the studio attempted something OTHER than a remake.

However, A different title probably would've helped lol

(Stay nerdy my friends)

This badly contrived movie threw common sense and continuity out of the window! They didn't even use ordinary VHS tapes to record the discovery as seen in the original, not even the recording of the spaceship being blown up! (yeah they skip the destruction of spaceship completely so they can use it in the final chase scene) Their equipment was more up to date than the stuff in the original movie! And the team was funded and headed by Americans with English speaking Norwegians so why was everything they found written in Norwegian in the original? Just a lot of Yank crap added to ease the viewing of todays idiot popcorn audience especially the template, young pretty scientist (as if that would happen) added to serve that audience and deliver nothing original other than ripped off sequences from the original movie.

If there was any justice in the world the negatives to this film would be burning!

This movie was awful, I hate how Hollywood rehashes old ideas that have already been done as best as possible.

Ok thanks for the explanation that does actually clear it up a a bit. Did they say it was Cellular? Can't remember that. I know they don't in the remake/prequel whatever the hell it calls itself.

I actually enjoyed this, it was pretty good but not better than the original, and at least this wasn't a remake.

'Imitation' rather than 'Assimilation' is used because that's essentially what the Thing does. Perfectly imitate it's victim following the assimilation process.

It's a theme stated in the Carpenter film, and we get a very direct example of this in the prequel with the scene where it's revealed the Thing was simply 'imitating' a close ally to Kate.

Basically, I've always viewed the Thing as being a very unique alien being with equally unique cellular structure and abilities. Much like the Shoggoth's from Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness". A story it's been said was very influential for the original short story featuring the Thing, "Who Goes There?"

I have to say that I'm a HUGE fan of the original and i think people are being too hard on this movie. Yes, Carpenter's film is much better, but this is a decent movie. They went for more of an action film and less of a suspense film. I enjoyed it, will see it again in cinema, and will buy it on blu-ray.

The movie is good. No one is of course capable of making one as good as carpenters though. We should be lucky however that they made it fairly true to the original and not some shit this is just thrown up by hollywood

saw this movie already, and i have to say its a lot better then i thought it was going to be. its a prequal so i guess thats why it worked. i thought it was pretty cool that at the end of the film the last surviving guy ends up getting in that chopper when it arrives and they chase the dog who is infected and try to shot it because thats how john carpenters version starts off so i think they executed it pretty well.

this movie did what it's set out to do, i think..which is telling us what happened to the norwegian crew. i mean, in that aspect it did fine. but to better carpenter's movie..it didn't even come close. first of all, the type of movie is different. carpenter goes for a more psychological terror by creating an atmosphere filled with dread and a much controled and slower pace.

the prequel however decides to go a bit more commercial and audience friendly, first of all, by having an american female lead. remember, carpenter was taking a huge risk by having an all male cast in his movie.

but, yeah..this prequel is pretty decent and i'm looking forward to see what happens to either MEW's character or even MacReady and Childs. or, a completely fresh take on this alien franchise.

Musta been lame for the straight to Blu-Ray release.
Shame, there is So Much Potential in a Thing sequel if handled correctly. The premise of a new expedition going down to the Antarctic. Will they find out the truth? Or will they unleash it on the world and doom all Earth-based life? And if they Do find out the truth in time what do they do next? Lock down the South Pole? Sterilize everyone and every-Thing trapped there?
Endless possibilities..

I've just been to cinema to see this, and I was surprised at how good it was. John Carpenter's The Thing is my favourite horror movie so this had a lot to live up to. While not as good (it was never going to be) it still delivers. It still has the feeling of paranoia and dread, and some good ideas on how the Thing makes itself known (I especially like the scene where the unconcious guy's hand snaps of and attacks another guy). If you've not seen this film, don't listen to people slamming it for not being like the 1982 film (even if it was, these same people would still slam the film for being too much like the original), watch it and make up your own mind. It's a good prologue to a classic film. And the last shot of the film is practically a perfect replica of the opening shot of John Carpenter's film. I'd have to say, this film deserves a well earned 8 out of 10.
