The new issue of HellHound magazine will be hitting newsstands next month and the website Dark Shadows News has an excerpt of the interview that was conducted with Tim Burton. With the film's opening just a few short months away, fans still haven't seen a teaser, but potential descriptions of the trailers have leaked. If those descriptions are authentic, it would seem that the remake of the cult soap opera will be marketed as a comedy. But, when asked about the rumored humor, the director had this to say:

"It's news to me... I always start things with the most serious of intentions. I sometimes find humour in things that aren't funny and vice versa."

As you may have heard quite often is that Tim Burton and star, Johnny Depp were huge fans of the original series when growing up. Both boast of racing home from school just to make sure they didn't miss it. So what is it that caught a young Tim Burton's interest in the soap?

"The reason I liked Dark Shadows was that it was a weird family story. It just happened to have supernatural qualities to it."

How about the look of the main character Barnabas Collins, how did Tim Burton approach Johnny Depp's look for this film?

"We wound up with a nod to [original actor] Jonathan Frid's Barnabas. Because of the sensitive nature of the character, I liked the idea of his fingernails being long, a bit more tactile."

One thing is for certain is that the film won't be riddled with special effects like his Alice in Wonderland movie.

"I want to rely on the characters... We were trying to keep it as human and personal as possible. Every effect should not seem like an effect."

This May, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp team up to bring us their re-imagining of the classic series DARK SHADOWS. The story of Barnabas Collins and his Collinsport companions has enthralled audiences since it first aired in the late 60s. Now, FM is celebrating the return of DARK SHADOWS with THE most complete coverage you’ll find anywhere. With new and exclusive FM interviews from the original cast members Jonathan Frid, Lara Parker, David Selby, Katherine Leigh Scott, and more, plus a conversation with new DS director, Tim Burton, issue 261 is the place for all things DARK SHADOWS. To celebrate, one of FM’s favorite cover artists—Jason Edmiston (254 Vincent Price, 255 Voldemort)—brings us his vision of “The Barnabi”, Jonathan Frid and Johnny Depp as we bridge the divide between the SHADOWS of the past and the SHADOWS of the future.

Dark Shadows also stars Helena Bonham-Carter, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Chloe Moretz and Jackie Earle Haley. The film will be in theaters May 11th, 2012.

Well crafted article.

Frankly, I'm bored with Burton's cookie-cutter movie making.

Trailer would be nice.

Still think that Rufus Sewell would have been better Barnabas.
