Werewolf By Night is set to premiere on Disney+ this Friday, and the black-and-white classic horror throwback marks a bold change in direction for Marvel Studios.
The surprisingly gory - and it is very gory - project was developed as the MCU's first "Special Presentation," and even though we will hopefully see the likes of Jack Russell, Elsa Bloodstone and Man-Thing again down the line, this 52-minute episode is expected to be a standalone tale.
Now, director Michael Giacchino has seemingly confirmed recent rumors that the studio is planning more "one-and done stories" during an interview with SFX Magazine. "It was perfect for me," he added. "Because I wanted to do something in the vein of a really fun episode of The Twilight Zone or The Night Gallery."
Which characters these other specials will focus on remains to be seen, but there's a good chance Kevin Feige and co. are planning to use them as an opportunity to introduce or expand on previously unexplored corners of the MCU (though how many of them are left at this stage is open for debate).
The rumor mill is claiming that Marvel Studios intends to change-up its usual 6-episode series format in favor of these more compact specials, so it'll be interesting to see what form the likes of Nova, Wonder Man and the planned Black Panther and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings spinoffs take.
Though the majority of critics are still embargoed from sharing their reviews, those in attendance for the recent Fantastic Fest screening were allowed to post their verdicts, and Werewolf By Night is currently sitting at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with nine reviews counted.
