BOX OFFICE: IRON MAN 3 Finishes Weekend With A Mighty $174 Million

Surprisingly, Iron Man 3 ended its first weekend at the North American box office with slightly less than was predicted by most analysts, but it still had the second highest opening of all-time! Hit the jump for details on that and plenty of other figures.

Iron Man 3 didn't end up exceeding expectations at the North American box office this past weekend, but it most certainly finished exactly where most were expecting it to. While early estimates had it pegged as grossing a three day total of $175 million, it finished just shy of that with $174.1 million ($174,144,585 million to be exact). Not a bad result by any means, especially as that figure gives it the honour of having the second highest opening of all-time! Meanwhile, Studio System News obtained the following statement from IMAX in regards to how pleased they were with Iron Man 3's performance on their screens over the course of this weekend.

Thanks to Iron Man 3, this weekend is a global IMAX record, as we’ll generate nearly $30 mil from one movie for the first time in our company’s 46 year history ($16.5 mil domestically and $13 mil internationally). The global cume for Iron Man 3 in IMAX is estimated to be $40.2 mil as of Sunday evening.

Domestically, IM3 delivered $16.5 mil on 326 screens for a fantastic per screen average of $50,600 (remember, we’re a single screen business). Our biggest issue: the vast majority of our shows were sold out. This is the the 2nd best domestic opening in IMAX history.

Internationally, Iron Man 3′s IMAX results produced numerous records, generating approximately $13 mil this weekend on 267 IMAX screens for an outstanding per screen average of almost $50k. Again, sell out shows everywhere! This is all the more encouraging considering over 100 of the screens were on their second weekend of the film, confirming Iron Man 3′s word of mouth is strong.

There were record smashing IMAX openings in key territories, including China ($63k per screen), Russia ($72k per screen) and Ukraine ($46k per screen).

While it's still early days, some analysts are even taking a guess at how much they believe Iron Man 3 will ultimately end up grossing worldwide. $1.3 billion is currently the most popular answer, but we'll just have to wait and see! Either way, we'll be sure to keep you updated here on CBM.

Wow, huge weekend! The movie was just decent and The Mandarin was disappointing (especially because he seemed so cool and interesting in the trailer) but good on Marvel anyways.

Damn you guys are paying too much. It was only $6.50 here in PA for 1:15pm matinee Sunday afternoon. No 3-D tho as I read it didn't really add to the viewing experience and was done post-production.

I always go to Saturday or Sunday matinees for all opening weekend movies I see. It's never packed like evening showings, although you still have to get there half hour early to get the best seats...

Movie was average but if you want to be entertained, it's a go see movie. Although, it was hard to grasp what they reduced Kingsley to though. He could've been something but as we all know, behind the enemy mask and evil enterprises, it's always the white guy pulling the strings. It's almost like everyone else is too incompetent to be a villain in a cbm world.

Yes, it was... It could have been better but it certainly wasn't bad. As for Iron Man 3, I kinda knew about the twist before watching it (thanks to a article with no spoiler warning), I still liked it although I really wanted to see The Real Mandarin. :/

Guys, quit your whining!

A huge majority of average people liked it. Even a large majority of critics liked it. 78% on RT isn't bad, although it isn't as good as it could have been.

@Nomis, the second week drop isn't going to be that bad because it doesn't have much competition. If it gets $10M each weekday this week and then a 50% hold from last weekend, it'll still be approaching $300 Million in the US by its 10th day in theaters. That's damn good.

I expect Star Trek will unseat it in its third weekend, and some people think that's because its Star Trek, but in the third weekend, I expect IM3 will be down to around $50 Million, while Star Trek will probably hit $80-100 Million. That's VERY good for Star Trek, but it won't break any box office records, or even come close.

And big picture, this assures us that more CBMs will be made and get big budgets, which everyone should be looking forward to.

This is ridiculous, they should count amount of tickets sold. tickets to go watch an american movie in China are $50 USD each, add 3-D and it is even more expensive world wide.

Awww Nomis you are so correct, I do have respect for the all the Marvle fans who are liking the movie for what it is and those who are being honest with themselves and are not calling this a masterpiece!!!!

But you got to love those delusional Marvelites who are up their with the Nolanites who cannot take any criticism of any type, but their reasoning it made a lot of money! So it has to be good!

@ TheRealRemy

I hate to open Pandora's Box with you but here we go. Who the frick is asking to count tickets? Everyone knows this movie has made bank and will continue to make the bucks for the next several weeks. You have your Marvelite blinders on that this movie was weak and had a lot of issues. But let me guess your rebuttal:

1. Ummmm it made a lot of money
2. MCU can do no wrong
3. Ummm DC sucks

@joemomma29 true story, big box office numbers do not equal good movie. But Iron man 3 despite its numerous flaws is still a decent watch.
It was always going to do well regardless of the content due to the goodwill of the avengers. The only movie this year with any chance of catching Iron man 3 is Man of steel and that would help cement the genre even more as its important that tentpole franchises like these do well if not people start writing obituaries for the genre.

@Nomis Well the only bad word of mouth it's coming from is some of the fans. Everybody else...likes it. Mostly anyway. It more than likely won't be #1 when Star Trek:Into Darkness comes out. I just hope Marvel/Feige doesn't do anything silly like that again.

IM3 was amazing and deserves every bit of that money. I will giving them more of my money too a couple of more times...

..but MOS remains my most anticipated cbm. I hope IM3 keeps raking it in and hopefully MOS will be in the same ballpark money wise
