Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3″ pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Iron Man 3 was directed by Shane Black, from a screenplay written by Drew Pearce. The film opened in theaters May 3, 2013. It stars: Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark), Gwyneth Paltrow (Virginia Potts), Don Cheadle (Col. James Rhodes), and Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin.

I love the idea that Mandarin that nothing more than an Osama Bin Laden-esque character - a US/CIA/Media creation to install fear into people all over the world.

My God, what a bunch of whiney bitches on this site. I've been reading articles here for years, but jeebus the comments section is getting seriously tired. I was as shocked as anyone by the twist, but still enjoyed the movie quite a bit. Hardcore Marvel fan that loved MOS & is really rooting for WB/DC to get it going. Please people, grow up a bit?

Shane Black would have been an excellent choice for Heroes For Hire. He did a descent job with Iron Man 3 but he failed at tying all of the ends together and bringing the mythos full circle. The twist wasn't needed unless it would have been done like "The Usual Suspects" were in the charcter fools everyone and REALLY was the Mandarin after all. The twist destroyed the true potential that the movie had. The Mandarin could have been a terrorist on many levels.

I could have accepted the changed Mandarin only if they wouldn't have turned him into a walking punch line and gave him his powers.

Welcome to the world of double standards.

Superman snapping Zod's neck : "Eh... it's not your dad's Superman."

That great IM3 twist : "Don't you dare touching dat Mandarin !"

@CapA You're trying to create a double-standard that doesn't exist. The general response to the faux uprising against Superman killing Zod is simply, he had no choice.

"Eh... it's not your dad's Superman." is your own fabrication presented as an actuality. Meaning, you're dishonest. =(

Nomis - Trance beat that twist.

Neo - "It's not your dad'Superman." is an excuse I've read over and over these past weeks. He had a choice to fly away with Zod and figure something else or the script just wanted to portray a Superman THAT different from the classic character.

Trevor's Mandarin was a twist and a decoy, the real Mandarin was Guy Pearce's character, thank God for that ! With all due respect to Sir Ben Kingsley, he's not much of an action hero.

I might be one of the few who is alright with the twist. But yeah, it could have worked. Have Tony go to the Manderin's mansion, like in the movie and have them fight each other hand to hand, and the makeshift gadgets easily taken care of. The Manderin kicks Tony's ass, leaves to record the final video after he leaves Killian in charge of the Extremis project and Tony. After the big seasport vattle, set up his return by makng him and his ninja's take care of a SWAT team who have come to take him in and escape. There, no magic rings but still an ass-kicker.

@Nomis

The Mandarin in the comic books was always in superb shape and that fits Guy Pearce better than Ben Kingsley.

Kingsly was miscast for the actual Mandarin, but had they played him all the way through as he was in the terror videos, it could have been dope. Especially if they trimmed the Ace Ventura meets Naked Gun comedy with Stark.

I see where hes coming from. The Mandarin isn't The Joker, Riddler, Penguin, Lex Luthor, Green Goblin, Doc Oc etc where ALL audiences know him, so average movie goers love the twist, though I also feel the fanboys pain about the Mandarin....

People need to stop being little bitches about IM3. Superman and Batman had to be rebooted twice each to get to Nolan's Batman and Snyder's MoS. This is the first incarnation of Iron Man on screen so calm your tits. I'm sure we'll see the true Mandarin some day, I mean when ever Marvel is done with their MCU (so maybe in a distant future).
AwesomeSauce
AwesomeSauce - 7/1/2013, 12:14 PM
...or maybe not, who knows if Marvel is ever going to reboot with their MCU expanding.

EXACTLY. For a first incarnation this is a pretty damn solid film series compared to others in this genre.

When you listen to Shane Black's reasoning the logic of his creative choice makes sense, but much of the MINO problem was in the execution as well as in the inappropriateness of the character for the cinematic universe he was part of. The Marvel Universe isn't trying to deconstruct superhero comic books so much as its trying to revive their most interesting aspects. Making a fake Mandarin doesn't really have a place in a universe where the character, his organization, and influence were established as very possible from the first film.
