All Hail the King Marvel Ben Kingsley

The Huffington Posts' venerable wordsmith, Mike Ryan spoke with Sir Ben Kingsley about all things Trevor Slattery in celebration of the latest Marvel One-Shot, All Hail the King. Kingsley is finally free to field questions about the misdirection of his role in Iron Man 3, which he says he had no qualms executing. "I wasn't worried [about fan reaction]. I truly wasn't worried. When I worked a lot in the theater before I became heavily involved in movies, which I love, I was privileged to play a lot of Shakespearian roles that most people in the audience were familiar with and everyone has their preconception of ... so, it had to be my Mandarin. It had to be my Trevor."

Continuing on about fan feedback, Kingsley states, " I don't get too heavily involved with feedback; I express and then I'm done. I paint my portrait and then I put my brushes down and I walk away. But it has filtered through to me in a gentle way that very, very, very few people indeed were upset by that twist. Even avid Marvel fans, they went along with it." Hmmm....while, there are a lot of comic book fans that loved the twist, I dare say, there's an equal number that were incredibly upset by it. Lucky for Marvel Studios, in the grand scheme of things, comic book fans (while numerous around these parts) make up only a tiny fraction of the box office. Sure, we have the power to get a snowball rolling downhill but once it reaches the colossal size of a Marvel Studios, we comic book fans become a small minority of its fan base. And in terms of Iron Man 3, the 'casual' superhero fan absolutely loved the twist.

Moving on, I'm sure there are a lot of folks that want to know if we've seen the last of Trevor? "I honestly don't know," said Kingsley. He continued, "I know they're keen to seeing how this film goes. They were all there at the screening that they kindly invited me to -- all the guys, they love it. I honestly don't know. Trevor is so unpredictable anyway, I can't answer for him! He's mad -- he's probably lying in a pool of blood and Guinness somewhere." Oh, I'm sure somebody at Marvel knows....

IM3 was subpar, the one-shot was meh.

After Tony House gets destroyed, I lose interest in the film.

IMO, if the plan was to reveal that there was a REAL Mandarin the whole time... They should've just used the REAL Mandarin in the first place.

What makes you think that? RDJ Jr isn't even signed for Iron Man 4 yet plus he's getting kinda up in age. This might have been our last shot.

The opinions expressed on these sites about the Mandarin twist don't reflect the majority opinion on the matter. That's just how it is. I myself was a tad disappointed in not seeing Kingsley as an actual villain but I can't hate the whole thing either.

All Hail the King was good but at this point though I think the Mandarin should be left alone. What's done is done. Moveon.org on this one. Of course when the likes of Doom, Anhilus, Magneto, Apocalypse and Galactus are with other companies, the choice of movie quality villains becomes increasingly thin once you get past Loki, Red Skull, Ultron, and Thanos. There's still Kang I guess. But who else? Count Nefaria? Moses Magnum? Squadron Supreme? I dunnow.

Honestly, after Avengers 3, I hope we get a whole new cast.

If there were very "few" people who were upset about the twist than how does he as the actor who portrayed the character know about them being upset? lol I think it's half and half for the people who both disliked and praised the twist in the movie. It was a massive setup in the trailers and promotion and then in the final product we didn't get what we expected. Some people found it funny, some found it surprising and some found it terrible. It wasn't the twist I'd say that made fans upset with the movie it was the antagonist, portrayal of the sidekick and plot that was just boring to some people. I still have bits that I enjoyed from the film but honestly I was just disappointed with what we received.

However, I must say that the One-Shot was great! :)

Huge respects to Kingsley for working with what he was given.

I would've like the one shot more if this WASN'T said in Iron Man 3;

"You said you wanted the Mandarin. You're looking right at him. It was always me, Tony, right from the start. I am the Mandarin!"-Aldrich Killain

@DudeGuyMan

That's what I said to myself after I saw it. He was too hyped up at the time and said things he shouldn't have said. Whether if he was meant to be the mandarin or not that's what I took away from it. lol

That's what I originally thought they would do before the film released. I figured the magical rings would easily make way for the Doc, but seeing that the real mandarin is either still out there in secrecy or possibly just a role passed down to each new generation shows that there's something we aren't completely fond of. Of anything the one shot gave room for more to work with.

The short was actually ok. The ending was weak. I hated that they just left it there. But the Justin Hammer part was brilliant!

it's been almost a year, let it go. looking back the reality is Sir Ben is 70 years old and never a real physical actor so it's not like he could have a real battle with Tony. Sure it sucks that Mandarin is (was now that he's dead in the comics) Tony's arch-villain but it's time to move on

Marvel haven't gave us the real Mandarin yet. All we know is that there is another one out there and I think we've all learned that "names" can be deceiving.

Loved IM3, loved the Mandarin twist, and love Ben Kingsley as Trevor. All Hail the King was hilarious.

Don't give two shits about source accuracy. Movies are a different medium, so different stories, cool with me.
