With the new Judge Dredd film coming out very shortly this seems like the right time to unload any inventory one might have from the Sylvester Stallone version. A film that most Dredd fans would be happy to erase from their memory.

The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

The film opens in 3D September 21st.

Despite all the costume limitations, Stallone was really formidable as Dredd. Urban looks like a [frick]ing joke next to him.

The aspen shuttle looks familiar..

I've never read a single Dredd comic, so i can't debate about if it was faithful to the source or not (i've heard not though), but it was a decent action movie, i still watch it by time to time.

This movie was a hell of a lot better than Urban's version could ever hope to be. One of the best CBMs to date. Don't know why everyone has to hate.

Why couldn't they have gone with the concept that didn't have the codpiece?

I just don't think this is a comic that's ever going to translate well to any other medium: movies, videogames etc.

They are all from the 'Art of Judge Dredd',a book that was widely available when this ass rape of a 'film' was released.

Roll on the 7th when the REAL Dredd film is out.

@INSTANTJUSTICE How did you get to see it already and as a fan of Dredd in the comics, would you say it's faithful? I'm really hoping for this to be something special. :o)

Dredd was based on a Clint Eastwood type when first created so he's supposed to be tall & lean muscular like Urban NOT short & bulky muscular like Stallone.

Urban looks great as Dredd, hope movie works.

Dredd wasn't based on Clint Eastwood, he was influenced by the Dirty Harry character and Mad Max but not based on the physical properties of either. Dredd is supposed to have some meat on his bones, not flapping about inside his suit like el-weedo! They should have gone with Ray Stevenson.

That said, the despite his physical limitations and costume fail. They got the Helmet right and I have no doubt Karl Can perform the role because he's a decent actor. The camera and the director are just gonna have to go overboard to make him look tougher and bigger than he really is the way the way they did with a 5'10" Arnold Schwarznegger and a 5'9" Sly Stallone. Karl at least has height advantage for the part at 6 foot!

"showing Dredd as being a complete unstoppable bastard."

It's important to stress he's not a *complete* bastard. In the recent Dredd 3D MTV featurette John Wagner summed up Judge Dredd:

"He's your greatest *hero* and your greatest *nightmare* wrapped up into one."

If your life is in danger he will help you. If you call on the Judges for help they are legally required to assist you. Judge Dredd is not a Punisher type character. He doesn't act outside the law - he *IS* the law. He follows rules and regulations.

Sure, he can act like a bastard, the Judges are fascist law enforcers upholding a fascist state, but Dredd (and the other Judges) are trying to make Mega-City 1 a safer place. Without the Judges, Mega-City 1 would collapse into anarchy.

@Instant
I knew I have seen most of them but to be honest I've not had that book off my shelf since my eyes were torn out by Slys version.I've got another Sly film book too somewhere, might have seen a few in there too but since I've not had that out either?
What I want is something similar from Garlands Dredd,Jocks art and production pics from the prop department etc.

@OptimusPrimeTime: because those who hate it read the comic book and found out is as respectful to the Dredd comics as Batman & Robin is to the Batman comics.

Meat on his bones?

In my opinion Dredd in the movie looks exactly like he looked in the first comic strips. Most of their inspiration has come from those.
Only things that bother me in the new version is the lack of villain known from the comics and the damn bike but otherwise i cant wait to see the movie. :)

Oh and the people of Megacity should have weared more futuristic looking clothes too.

I don't have to see the movie to say that Urban looks like a frail stick next to Stallone. It's about the looks and physicality, so it doesn't matter how he handled the role. As long as he looks like a dweeb, I don't care about his performance.

Can't wait! Really looking forward to this. Just don't do a 'shit resident evil' stunt on us. We all know how that went.

Fingers crossed.

I care about actor's performance if he fits the part at the stage of casting. But Urban is not the case.
