The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

Dredd needs to man-up, I wouldn´t mind being Lena Headey´s.

after watching this clip, i'm thinking Clint Eastwood would've been an awesome Dredd back in the day.

Lena Headey's voice sounds so different to how I imagined Ma-Ma would speak. In the leaked screenplay I got the impression she was some crazed psycho but Headey appears to be playing her as a 'real' person rather than an exaggerated comic strip type villain. I think that's the right approach. I think Karl Urban's Dredd is similar. He's playing Dredd as 'cool under pressure' rather than a 'shouty shouty' Stallone type.

The name Peach Trees still sounds naff. I almost laughed when Ma-Ma said "Peach Trees." What a crappy name for a block. Oh well, it's just a name but I would have preferred something else.

The second shot where you see the scale of the block - that looks pretty impressive for a small budget film. You get a sense that this is a big place.

Not long to go until the film is released....

@mmusicman;

I said exactly the same thing on the last DREDD article.
Eastwood at age 45, with the kind of delivery later shown in Unforgiven when he gets drunk and becomes that vicious Gunfighter Munney again, threatening to kill everyone, and their families, and their dogs... and burn their damn house down. ^^
Eastwood's chin and snarl under the DREDD visor would of been awesome.

I think this movie will either be badass or on a Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengenace level. I hope it's good.

Peach Trees was the name of the cafe where Alex Garland and John Wagner (I believe) first met to discuss making this film, back in 2008.

I do actually believe dreddhead123 is starting to come around!!!
It's not snowing is it?
I know the reason for it being called Peach Trees but I think it sort of fits.
Here in the UK a lot of the roughest areas usually had the most beautiful names (usually blocks of flats with the word 'Gardens' in it somewhere.)
Getting very close now ...can't bloody wait!!!

How come nobody's wearing kneepads? Everybody in the Big Meg wears kneepads. Small quibble. Still gonna watch this.

Actually Dollstix; take a look at the blocks in the picture - they are named. ;-)

I don't know if in the film each block would have it own criminal boss in charge, or whether some bosses could potentially oversee more than one block - but it at least shows why Ma-Ma is saying 'Peach-Trees' before her announcement. She is addressing and getting the attention of her / that entire block named 'Peach-Trees'.
