This movie, first and formost, made me hope. In only the first 2 minutes of the film, I cared more about Superman, his life, and death, then I ever did in any of the previous films. In this film, we are presented with a world without hope, and group of outcasts, who must "Come Together" to save the world from the villainous and war hungry Steppenwolf. We are, in this movie, shown some of the real people living in this world. We get to know those our heroes save. I loved that.
Our main characters though, are a bit of a mixed bag. Ezra Miller's The Flash is a fan favorite, and I saw a lot of audience latch onto him. He's funny, has heart, and is the lovable (possibly autistic?) nerd that everyone loves. Batman is fun, and a bit lighter than in BVS. He feels human though. We get the usual great acting of Ben Affleck. We get to see some interesting world building stuff in his Gotham scenes. It creates an atmosphere. Diana has some emotional meat, and a good relationship with the rest of the team. Her Batman relationship is dynamic with alot of chemistry. Cyborg as well, has some great emotional moments, and is better than I expected. On the other hand, Aquaman is more of a stereotype than a character. I think he needed more scenes. Steppenwolf is better than others have said. He is definitly not Malkeith bad. He has character. You understand his motives. They explain them. One moment in a flashback is very much defining for him. He doesn't get much, but you understand him. The entire cast though, has amazing chamistry. There is a very funny scene with Flash and Cyborg.
Now, there are alot of flaws with the story as well... well not flaws... more lack of depth. It's a very basic plot, servicable, but not great. The underwater scenes get me excited for Aquaman. The fight scenes are epic and large scale. CGI gets a bit weak at points, there is a very obvious green screen scene. Still, it mostly looks interesting. There are some cool ideas here.
The music is dynamic and entertaining, but not as good as BVS's. They use their Leonard Cohen song very well.
I would also just like to say, I watched the credits, and when Jack Kirby's name came up, I smiled.
Now, most of you might be wondering why I never mentioned Superman. That's because I'm saving the best for last. Superman is, well Superman. COMIC BOOK SUPERMAN. Truth, Justice, the american way. Hope. It is all there. He is classic Superman, but he's still complex. He is actually terrifying when he first comes back, before he becomes classic Superman. This is my favorite DCEU movie that includes Superman. Like I said, the first two minutes do more for Superman than any previous movie.
In conclusion, great cast great chemistry, okay plot. It really could have been better. It need more time for the characters, but it's good.
3.5 out of 4 stars.
