MEN IN BLACK Spinoff Set For A 2019 Release With A Script From The Writers Of IRON MAN

Deadline has learned that Sony Pictures are in the midst of fast-tracking a Men in Black spinoff film and have already dated the film for a May 17, 2019 release date.

Neither Will Smith nor Tommy Lee Jones is expected to return to reprise their fan-favorite roles as Agent J and Agent K, respectively, but the new film will continue to build onto the world they created and will acknowledge events from the first three installments, similarly to Universal's highly-successful Jurassic World.

The screenwriting duo of Matt Holloway & Art Marcum, whose past credits include Iron Man, Punisher: War Zone, and most recently, Transformers: The Last Knight, has been tapped to pen the screenplay. Their script is said to be a contemporary take on the alien-fighting secret agency and will shift the focus to new characters that are fighting villains on a more global scale than the original trilogy.

Water F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are producing while the legendary Steven Spielberg will serve as an executive producer. The search for a director is currently ongoing, but the report adds that the studio doesn't expect the search to go on for much longer.

On a related note, the rumored Men in Black/21 Jump Street crossover with Channing Tatum & Jonah Hill is reportedly still in some early stage of development, but this new project will take priority. When announcing the new film, Parkes said, "It’s so rare to get to the end of the script and know you’re holding a movie in your hands, but Art and Matt have written a spinoff that somehow is true to the core of the MiB world and yet expands the franchise to a fresh new place."

I hope they go back to the tone of the original film. Had a slight horror feel.

The sequels were bad enough. We don't know need a spinoff.

If it's good, then let's see it. But the MiB franchise has never gotten better than one joke about a little gun with a big kick.

Also... are the comment sections [frick]ed for everyone else?

If they are, I'm guessing no one can reply to this... Hmm...

Hopefully it will be like the old Malibu Comics, which was a lot more darker and dealed with not just aliens, but demons and supernatural creatures too.

Not a fan of ANY MiB without Jones and Smith, so most likely won't see this. Fricking Sony.

Rumor is the men in black find a ET alien and attempt to take it back to its planet but along the way they are hunted by Boba Fett on a job to retrieve it for Jabba the Hutt. Only with the help of Han Solo and Jin n Erson can the Men in Black safely deliver ET and save the universe.

I'd much prefer a sequel to the critical and financial hit that was RIPD

This could be fun, but making it bigger "global scale" worries me.

If Lord & Miller are involved, I also think the Jump Street crossover film could be very funny and might even lead to a spinoff franchise. Imagine Jonah Hill & Channing Tatum starring in R-rated versions of MiB, Ghostbusters, Jumanji...

I love the idea of a crossover with Jump Street. I think it’s unique and crazy enough to work.
