A Year at CBM. THEHAWK Looks Back

I take a look back at what has happenned on CBM since I joined. Everything from the birth of the Fan Fic section and the increase in users to the problems of late. This is my opinion and is not intended to represent the views of any other user.

The changing face of Comicbookmovie.com

I remember roughly two years ago first stumbling on CBM when they ran that April Fools Day story about Wolverine appearing in the Incredible Hulk. Later when I found out that this news as false I did not return to CBM for several months. When I returned I was stunned to see how much it had grown. There were people in the comments sections, not many, but there were a few. It was people like Shaman, TheMyth, Joslezio, Souleater, RorMachine( then going by Rorschach01), IonParalax, and several others who are no longer with us. This was a time when we never saw the editors, we would occasionally receive comments by the only editors at the time, Jim, JMan, and Nate Best.

A lot of the users I consider CBM staples were nonexistent, we didn’t have LEEE, Joshw, Multi, IntsigatorGirl would occasionally show up, but the only other female presence on the site was THEPHOENIX when she would log in under my name. I look at the number of users and feel glad that our community has grown so. We even had a target for our pent up frustrations in the form of Supermike, our own little troll. But as annoying as he was, he was still part of the community.
Articles then were almost exclusively posted by Jman, with Ror or myself occasionally contributing, but over the months, the site grew to the point where we had dozens of users posting articles a day, it was wonderful, we were receiving news from so many diverse sources.

At this point the little Editorial section was thriving, this was before the fan fic tab and all of the fan fics contributed were placed in Editorials. I admit I feel a sense of pride when I think about the progression of the fan fic section. When I first arrived on the site, TheMyth was the first to post a fan fic that I can recall, it was his X-Men stories. After reading them I became interested in Shaman’s work, eventually Shaman did his now nonexistent cast of the Justice League and his outline that pitted them against the New Gods of Apokalips. I did my first cast as a follow up to his; I cast the New Gods of Apokalips on February 12th 2009. From then on, it was an addiction. There were only a few of us and our articles would stay up front in editorial for days if not weeks before being replaced by more. I did my first story, Joslezio cast the Teen Titans, SoulEater wrote his Weapon X story. It was all well thought out and high quality work, no one person casts or casts without pictures, we put our hearts into our work.

It is because of users like us that more people began submitting fan material, and the almighty Galaktus in his infinite wisdom opened up a fan fic tab. And thus began what I think of as the Golden Age of CBM. People came from all over and began doing Fan Casts, News articles and Editorials, at that point it was still manageable, you could still post something and expect it to still be read.

We were doing it for fun, something to do while we wait for more news about comics, I remember my joy when my first story made the front page. “Batman 5 Shadow of The Bat part 2” Probably my most riveting story, shortly after that my 108 Character fan cast made the front, and at that point the fan casts on CBM exploded. Soon then new user LEEE777 posted the entire cast of the Avengers, and that made the front as well. Then another newer user, Joshw24 posted his 200 character Marvel cast, it was the last casting to make the front, the novelty had worn off and fan fics stopped making it to the front. We were all disappointed, especially me, I had just completed a 330 character X-Men cast that never saw the front. But we understood, it was after all a news site. I remember seeing links to my Justice League fan casts in other sites, there the articles were about how great a site like CBM was for fostering such creativity in its users. People joined CBM to read the rare fan fic casting or sketch by Shaman that made front, they joined to comment on the fan work.

After this we had the quite humorous “Supermike wars”. Some of the users had grown tired of Supermike and decided to make fake log ins. We had “Supermikesdad” “SupermikesMom” “Supermikesnonexistantgirlfriend”, “Supermikestherapist” and my personal favorite, “Supermikesdog” among others. This went on for a month, and grew old. It ended in a climatic battle one late night when THEPHOENIX who was posing as “Supermikesnonexistantgirlfriend” had it out with all of the other Supermikes, until the real one himself stepped in and apologized for everything. After that we never saw him again, some say he is still among us, posing as another user. Some say that people just aren’t looking in the right shallow graves, no one knows the truth, and if they do they are not talking.

About this time more editors started to pop up on the site, first there was Ed Gross, then Multi. Rorschach01 became and editor. We got more news and fan fic, about this time I stopped submitting news, what was the point the articles the editors do usually made the front, even if they were not the first one to be submitted. I focused on fan fic and began churning out better quality work to compete with the new users who began submitting amazing material, users like AnilRickly, and BatmanKnight.

We had a fun costume contest for Halloween, and got to see what everyone else on here looked like.

Then we had the User awards and things started to get weird.

There is no relation between the awards and that it is just things were changing, its hard to see something you love change, friends come and go. Rorschach01 became RorMachine, LEEE threatened to leave the site, I got my own stalker/hater. This is when the fan fic started growing out of control, I posted a story I spent months writing, only for it to be knocked to the second page in fan fic in a day.

Then tragedy struck, one of our long time users wife sent me a message saying that TheMyth was dying. I wrote a tribute to him, which made it to CBM’s front page. Luckily his wife exaggerated his condition and he is on the long road to recovery.

Shortly after this, my own life took a turn for the worse. A person I knew sent a virus to my computers, crashing them, he then went on to cancel my Deviantart.com and Writing.com accounts as well as my Youtube and others. He even wrote an article on here saying I was dead, hacked my e-mail and change mine and THEPHOENIX’s passwords. I lost everything on my computer, including dozens of partially completed stories and castings. I can rewrite those, but what loss really hurt was the fact that I lost my credibility among my friends on CBM.

When I was able to get a working computer I tried to set things right, I almost wished I never came back on as THEHAWK I still get angry e-mails from users about what happened. I try everyday to rebuild what I had.

After my personal drama boiled down, I tried resubmitting fan work, but it was a madhouse, it was impossible to submit anything without it getting buried, us old timers grew frustrated with it. Shaman stopped sketching. Several of us contacted CBM about it. Then CBM announced that users can’t repost fan material anymore. I may as well stop writing, that was the only way I could ensure that my work gets noticed, my last story got buried by two articles about a goldfish for Captain America, a dozen one person casts for Cap and a Mr. Bean for Cap article.

Now Galaktus plans to make a separate site for fan fic, they call it a solution, but it feels like exile. We who submitted fan fic helped this site grow, now it feels like we are being cast aside. He then made Joselzio and editor and fan fic has improved, but I’m not sure it can be helped.

Well there you go, this is a history of CBM from my point of view. I know it is biased, but I gave my honest views on everything. I love CBM, it is one of the few constants in my turbulent life. I will be active in it for as long as I am allowed, if my account is shut down tomorrow, then so be it. It’s been a good ride, I look forward to what the new decade will bring. I will keep writing and reading the work of others.
Once again,

HAWK out

HAWK- You're the man. First, let me say that I am glad that you and MYTH are doing well. We were all devastated by the "news" we received, but elated to know that you are doing well. Those of us who have been around for a while have seen this site go through some major growing pains and some learning stages and I that's what I see going on. I believe that this too shall pass.

I love coming to this site and although I haven't submitted many articles, it's the sense of community and fun that draw me here. The discussions I and we have been a part of have been entertaining, to say the least. The news is just an added bonus.

I too will be coming here and participating when an where I can, as long as I am able. Here's to ya HAWK!

Glad you liked the article, I was originally oging to post it on february 12 the anniversery of my first fan fic, but with everything that happened around that time...yeah it was a bit too hectic.

HAWK as always my man nice read I've also been a member
here on this site well over a year going on two. I remeber the supermike wars, the sketches that you rarely now see from SHAMAN.

Im also fed up with worthless material landing in the fancast knocking out quality work before users like myself ever gets to see it.
sometimes my work-shift gets pretty busy and it could be days before I get on... in the earlier days some great fancast could and would still be on front page for days those days are gone.

About a week ago someone posted a VENOM fancast with about 4characters and no photos or bio and it made front page of the fancast .So someone does a quality fancast that took them days to complete gets knocked down with CRAP LIKE THAT.. NOT COOL.

IM JUST A COMMENTER ON THE SITE I DONT HAVE THE TIME,PATIENCE OR INSIGHT TO DO FANCAST THATS WHY I STAND BEHIND YOU GUYS N GALS WHO PUT IN THE TIME AND EFFORT TO MAKE THIS SITE FUN,INTERESTING,AND ENTERTAINING. I do think things are headed in the right direction only time will tell.

It's funny this is posted I just commented on DDD's cast and used it to complain about the lame-o's killing good quality stuff like what he had just posted in fanfact.
InTylerWeTrust
InTylerWeTrust - 3/22/2010, 3:18 PM
I'd prefer they make 2 separate tabs, one for casts and one for stories/ideas for one. That way, the fan cast section would be a little cleaned up, and writers like you have a whole tab to show their work in.

I have barely commented on a fan cast lately, I just did on Ryden's Hawkeye cast yesterday, which was the first time in a while, because it got so monotonous and boring over there with the same stuff being posted over and over again, and I keep saying the same things over and over again.
Paulley
Paulley - 3/22/2010, 3:32 PM
Im really new here.. so it was nice to hear a brief history of the site.

Do you think there could be a way to somehow highlight the best Fan-Fic stories like a rating system where the best goes to the top.. or even a featured article section under the fan fiction tab where the first three are always highly rated fan fiction.

Or another more simple plan would be to add an extra tab for fan casts.. that would help the fan-fiction to last a little longer on the page.
ecksmanfan
ecksmanfan - 3/22/2010, 3:37 PM
Last I saw from Galactus was that there was no room for a new tab, hence the direction of the new Fan-Fic site. I think a new tab would be ideal, but if there is no room, then so be it. It might be possible to sacrifice one of the other tabs, like "Features" or "Scoops" but, alas, I am not the decision maker around these parts.

@CBM. I wasn't complaining. I said in there that I understand that this is a news site an fan fic does not belong on front. At least I think I did.

You misunderstood me, I meant for this to show my love and appreciation of the amazing site we have here, and the effect it has had on my life.

While I personally don't like the idea of a new site, I understand its need. I just don't like it simply because our stuff will get less views there, just like the Earthsmightiest site doesn't get much traffic compared to this one.

This wasn't meant to be a selfish focus on visibility or a complaint about fan fic, I simply showed my opinion about how the site has grown and changed since I first came on here. I didn't mean to come across as negative or complaining. I said at the end that I will keep writing because it is enjoyable.

I never meant this to be derogatory, I meant it to be a tribute.

I'm sorry if this offended, that is the last thing I wanted, you made this all possible.

You're in charge here, you say you want us to leave, we leave. I'll leave the moment you say, no hard feelings, it was fun while it lasted.

Like I said though, I never meant for this to offend anyone or degrage this site in any way.

@ComicBookMovie: Love the idea..New's and Fiction seperate..

I posted 2 fan-fic's on EARTHS MIGHTIEST..They are still on the front after 2 weeks and no comments..But guess what That don't matter either. Get traffic over there..Plenty of room..If ppl love fan-fic there is plenty of room for it ..

CBM isn't gonna make extra tab's for fan-fic...

Btw..I'm tired of spiderman fan-cast's....

The main problem most people I know have with the other sites is that you have to make new accounts and you have to repost the articles and down load the pictures and place them in the articles again.

I ahve a account there, but most of the stuff that interests me gets posted here. I will definately use the fan fic site, it is just that people go to fan fic on slow news days to see what is happening, most are too lazy to go to a new site.

One positive thing about it though, it will be nearly one of a kind. I've checked, save for Deviantart and Writing.com there are no real sites out there for fan amterial, that is why I was drawn to CBM. Stuff actually gets read here.

Galactus Insert: Why do you have to repost the same stuff at EMF? Why can't you do NON-CBM stuff at EMF? And what is soooo hard about having to login at different sites?
THEHAWK

yep, THEHAWK i hear ya.
i have been working on a Spider-man Fan Fic for a year but because of the reboot, people have been submitting their own ideas of one person casts, which drives my story to the bottom of the barrel.
thankfully, LEEE comments on EVERYTHING and as long as i mention it in a few articles, i might get maybe 10-20 comments.

@Hawk, Great Article! I remember I started coming on here properly a couple years back too and I feel exactly the same as you about everthing! I don't post article up here as I cant write for anything but I read what I can!

I remember all of what you've talked about and I remember the final supermike battle and I'm was sorry to have started the "Supermikesmother" fiasco. My Bad!

@CBM, I think that because of the nature of the site and all the user submitted work that it is inevitable that there is some really crappy articles put up here. Maybe if new articles are put into a kind of 'limbo' until they are accepted by one of the editors or maybe a select team of "trusted users" that will only allow article with a little thought put in them?

Then again maybe that detracts away from the point of Fan-Articles? I'm just throwing ideas about!

I have only been actively posting on here for the past 5 months but have been lurking back before you could even create your own fansite. Its a double edge sword you are talking about. Back in the day, only a small group actively contributed and commented. Now look where CBM has gone. It is a very high traffic site. It gets like 6 million page views a month!

So, with fan fic taking off, articles routinely get pushed down. There have been a lot of crappy ones but there has been an aggressive effort to demand more and people are responding. They are giving info, reasons for their picks and making sure the article looks good.

So what does that do for every fan fic article? It pushes it down the list. So, we are back to square one. If another site opens the door for multiple forms of artistic expression, why not help get it off the ground?

I've seen enough Spider-Man fancasts but who am I to tell someone else not to put their own version up if its done well?

This is just my opinion and is not addressed at anyone in particular.

The article gave me chills. I totally gotta shout out. Hell ya to me. lol. Anyways, I think the new site will be good. I know we might lose a lot of people. But, with some luck on our side it will be all of the people who don't really care. The passionate ones, me, you, Shaman, Anil, Lee, Ozy, and I'm sure many others. Will be there. I'll probably be on it all day. Fan Fic is the main reason I come to this site. I love it. I love peoples ideas, even some of the not so good ones. But, I still love it. We communicate with each other, we share ideas, we are friends, some of us, a family of sorts. At this point, I don't think it matters where we go, as long as we can still read each others articles. The important people will be there. Sorry if I left anyone out up there. It's like two a.m. I'm totally not trying to think that hard. But seriously, If CBM shut down tomorrow.
