Box Office Buzz January 8 – 10

It’s no real surprise to see that Avatar has once again landed the number one spot on top of the weekend box office charts, but who’d have expected such a taking?

For the fourth week in a row James Cameron’s Avatar has absconded with top place on the US domestic box office charts. This isn’t a massive surprise, but the fact it only suffered a 26% drop from last week, grossing another $50 million is relatively impressive.

As a result, Avatar has jumped up to the second spot on all time worldwide grossing films, second only to Cameron’s previous box office killer, Titanic. So far, in just over four weeks, Avatar has earned $1,341 billion dollars. That puts it at just $500 million behind Titanic, and likely to pass it considering that Titanic was in theatres for around 40 weeks, leaving Avatar another 36 weeks.

Stepping away from Avatar, the second and third spots were held by Sherlock Holmes at number two and Alvin and the Chipmunks: the Squeakquel at number three.

This week’s newcomers, Daybreakers, Leap Year and Youth in Revolt didn’t do so well, earning a total of $31 million between the three. They came in at spots number 4, 6 and 9 respectively.

Avatard is overhyped and I'm glad I didn't actually have to pay to see it. Free movie passes FTW!!!! Sorry many of you may have enjoyed it but it was a cliche storyline and the visual effects were not that amazing IMHO.

Jesus, Cameron will never be denied funding no matter how crazy his next idea is....he's box office gold. And props must be given, the story (albeit, unoriginal) was exceptionally well thought out. The scene where all the Na'Vi's are "plugged in" to the ground while chanting is something i won't soon forget.

I knew it would be big, just not this big. The haters must be feeling pretty silly at this point!

Hey, Shaman how does your foot taste?! Haha, j/p!

@LEEE

You were the biggest champion of this film, so props on your foresight!!!

@Instigator

Not that amazing.....haha..what????? You do realize that he created a CGI WORLD right!?!? C'mon, hate on the story all you want, but the visuals were astounding. Combine that with the creation of an entirely different species that interacted with their environment in a way never before thought of....

"Not that amazing..." REALLY??? Hmph...to each his own i guess...

@Teabag

I never said it did! However you have to admit the amount a movie makes and the quality of said film is a somewhat symbiotic relationship. If the film was an utter piece of sh!t, it wouldn't be the highest grossing film of all time! People are paying $20 a pop at imax several times over to see a movie with unimpressive special effects either, that's all i'm sayin'.

@Instigator

Hahaha, "...And?" Sounds a lil petulant to me, but hey, who am i to say what should impress you! Me, i'm impressed by people that do things that have never been done before, that create things never thought of before, and those that have the drive to see them come to fruition.

But who can argue with the wondrous logic of "...And?"

haha.

Side note:

Have there really been that many articles? This is the first i've seen, so maybe that's why everyones panties are in a bunch!

Talontd, Yes, in fact every week since its release we have had to hear about it. I applaud the movie as well, I saw it finally the other day and I would gladly do so again., but everyone is right and I believe Tyler said it best with, "Another article sucking Avatar's 1 billion dollar d*ck?" On a side not, I wish I had a billion dollar d*ck...

@MYTH & TYLER & SUPERDOG

I've been on holiday the last few weeks and haven't been around so i must have missed them! Everyones sentiments make more sense now. :-D

@INSTIGATOR

I can understand that. We are all becoming quite numb to everything because of how much we see due to this era's "connectivity". I'm not the biggest fan of CG either as it usually ends up ruining films that would otherwise be quality, i just didn't feel this was one of those instances. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. ;-) Cheers.

While Avatar was a visual masterpiece, I still gotta go with District 9 being the best sci-fi film i've seen in years. Truly the hidden gem of 2009

Better script, Better performances, and imo Better action.

What's not to like?
