A quick guide to CBM costumes Do's and Dont's

With the recent debates over Thor and Green Lanterns movie costumes, here is a small list of CBM costumes do’s and don’ts….

DO: Listen to the fans. Take time to compare and contrast. The most consistent iterations throughout the years are usually a good stepping stone. Pay close attention to which one the fans like most. After all, it’s the hardcore fans that eat, sleep and breathe this material. We all know that studios read sites like this one, why they sometimes neglect the advice is beyond me. The studio heads spend money on new houses, cars and boats. Our money goes to comics, we kind of know what we’re talking about….the last two sentences just depressed me….

DON’T: Stray too far from the source material. While with certain characters it makes sense to make tweaks, going too far can cause confusion if not outright rage. Batman Begins/The Dark Knight makes sense, an armored costume for a vigilante who doesn’t have superpowers. That is easily understood, along with the costume being black not blue and gray. Deadpool….mixed mutant powers look.. cringe. Cat..wo..man (I refuse to spell that in the correct way). What male (and some select female) CBM fans wouldn’t want to see a female crime fighter (or thief) roam the city in next to nothing? The only problem here is that it makes no sense, beyond that, the costume was downright atrocious, no need for further explanation.

DO: Explain the changes. If there has to be a change made to the costume (that’s not subtle) then let the audience know why. Example: (sorry Batman Begins and TDK have so many good examples)

Batman Begins:

“Nomex survival suit for advanced infantry. Kevlar biweave, reinforced joints”.

Bruce Wayne: [about the prototype Batsuit] Tear resistant?
Lucius Fox: This sucker will stop a knife.
Bruce Wayne: Bulletproof?
Lucius Fox: Anything but a straight shot.
Bruce Wayne: Why didn't they put it into production?
Lucius Fox: Bean counters didn't think a soldier's life was worth 300 grand. So what's your interest in it, Mr. Wayne?
Bruce Wayne: I wanna borrow it. For, uh, spelunking.
Lucius Fox: Spelunking?
Bruce Wayne: Yeah, you know, cave diving.
Lucius Fox: You expecting to run into much gunfire in these caves?
Bruce Wayne: Look, I'd rather Mr. Earle didn't know about me borrowing it...
Lucius Fox: Mr Wayne, the way I see it, all this stuff is yours anyway.

TDK suit change:

Bruce Wayne: I need a new suit.
Lucius Fox: Yeah, three buttons is a little '90's, Mr. Wayne.
Bruce Wayne: I'm not talking fashion, Mr. Fox, so much as function.
[hands him a diagram]
Lucius Fox: You want to be able to turn your head.
Bruce Wayne: Sure would make backing out of the driveway easier.

X-Men:

Wolverine: You actually go outside in these things?
Cyclops: Well, what would you prefer? Yellow spandex? (all quotes from IMDB.com)

Whether it’s funny or serious, explaining the changes can really help the story.

DON’T: This is a pet peeve of mine. If the CBM character wears a mask to protect his or her identity, DON’T keep taking off the mask while the character is in action or in public view just to show off your star more!! They wear masks for a reason and in any good CBM there is enough screen time for the alter ego and the secret idenity. I’m surprised that the studio didn’t have V take off his mask and show Evey what his real face looked like. The secret identity is important.

By the way, I like DC more than Marvel but I love Comic Books, both companies have TONS to offer. I think the Thor costume looks pretty good so far, hopefull he will have his trademark helmet as well. The Green Lantern costume looks just how I hoped it would, right from the comic book with an alien touch..back to the topic at hand….

What are some of YOUR costume Do’s and Don’ts or Pet Peeves??

I don't care how they explain it, x-men costumes sucked. They all looked the same and no masks?!?

And do not get me started with the Green Lantern fiasco. So far we've only seen the one magazine cover but WTF is that thing?

Batman works because it still is basically recognizeable as batman suit. Spidey works because it is basically exactly the same as the comics.

@teabag..you do make a really good point about the bat symbol. I know in Batman Begins they had trouble with that design and had to change it because it wouldn't fit right on the chest. I've always liked that the symbol was an armored focal point but I'll just remain happy they didn't incorporate the yellow oval....

@BubbaDude..I'm not a huge fan of the X-Men CBM costumes either and while Wolverine doesn't need a mask, I was bummed out that we weren't treated to one.

I also was never a huge fan of the Spiderman costume, the eyes really bugged me, IMO they should have went with more with a Steve Ditko/Alex Ross design

@Anil Rickly..HAHA that's exactly the movie franchise I was venting about....In the comics Green Goblin does find out Peter Parkers identity and they do that in the first Spiderman, I understand THAT one..but again in 2 and 3?? In that movie world he must have Mephisto on speel dial..

I don't hate the TDK suit, but would it really have hurt to give the body and limbs a shade of gray??? Would certainly made the bat symbol stand out and give us fans the so coveted black and gray costume.

IMO, the X suits would have worked better if they were a bit moe distinguished from each other. Aside from some very minor details, they looked exactly the same.

p.s. nice article NightBat ;-)

Ah, yes. the great costume debate...here we go again. I think I may be in the minority here, but I have come to the realization that sometimes, comic book costumes will just not translate well to the screen. Period.

You brought up wolverine and it's a perfect example. Jackman would look totally rediculous running around in bright yellow and blue spandex. Not only that, but if you look at how the X-Men movies were filmed, they have a grey/blue tone to them and to see a dude runn around in bright yellow would just pull you out of the film. So I understand why they darkened everyone's look. Storm is another example. they could very easily have put her in a white uniform, but it would have looked out of place. Granted, they could have used a grey suit instead of black or navy blue. Another example: Spiderman. The colors of his suit fit in perfectly witht he color tones that Raimi used when filming. If you watch the film, it has a lot of brighter colors, almost using theprimary colors.

As for the masks...the X-men have never hidden their identity so it is not essential to the film or the charachter to include a mask. Would it have been cool? Sure, but I'm ok with it not happening.

As for the recent releases of the Thor and Green Lantern images, I actually like how Thor, Loki and Odin look. It fits the idea of Asgardians being of another realm. Green Lantern...I'm holding off until I can see a full body image. It looks funky and I'm a tad confused on why they went with a computer generated suit instead of a traditional something, but I'm sure that'll all change when I see a preview of the film.

The film makers know where their money lies and it may come as a shock to some, but it isn't with 'fanboys.' Yes, we are always the first to see the films and yes we see them multiple times. However, comic book movies have come to the forefront of film genres and are becoming more and more popular. The general public is still the big moneymaker and execs know this and also know that they don't have to worry about what Joe Public thinks of Thor's costume or whether or not Wolverine wears a mask. Sadly...this will continue to happen for some time.

@McLovin..Thank you! The Batman: Dead End costume is AMAZING!! Add in some armor underneath ala the Batman Broken City arc and it would have been cool to see at the begining of a Batman movie....that is until he figures out that the gray part defeats the ninja practice..

@ ecks

i agree with everything you said.

Wolvie's costume really isn't even believable in the comics. He's the baddest brawler in the world, and he has the attitude to match. thats not the kind of person i expect to see in yellow spandex, y'know? lol That kind of person wouldn't be caught dead in yellow spandex, even he had 3 hot nekkid women lying next to him.

and you hit the nail right on the head. aside from the original x-men team, almsot none of them wear masks. lol. because they're not hiding they're identities. its pretty much known to everyone in the marvel universe that Cyclops is Scott Summers, Jean Grey is Marvel Girl/Phoenix, and so on. They aren't street level heroes like Spidey, who need masks.

@ ecks/CDB - agreed. I hate the yellow costume even in the comics. To me, this is the definitive Wolverine look:

and even that wouldn't work on film. I just wish that they each had more of a unique design.

@NightBat - True, but if it was just a hint of "machine gun" gray? I think it could still work. At night, with the cape over it, it would probably still look all black. We could only probably see the gray on scenes where he is standing talking to Commissioner Gordon or somewhere more brightly lit.

I actually wouldn't mind something like this for Wolverine:
Wolverine Pictures, Images and Photos

NightBat
NightBat - 7/16/2010, 11:16 AM
By the way, I know the majority of the X-Men don't wear masks, I was talking about the heroes that have a secret identity and HAVE to wear masks....that quote was just about the use of color on the costumes....just in case everyone thought I was under the impression that the X-Men wear masks haha....

@McLovin..yeah a hint of gray would be awesome and if you look at TDK you can see a HINT of it but not much
Gearstation
Gearstation - 7/16/2010, 12:53 PM
Why couldn't they have had the X-Men costumes made out of some type of canvas or thicker, bullet-proof material? That way they could have used the basic designs, but not have them made from spandex. There are other materials to use besides spandex and leather.
NightBat
NightBat - 7/16/2010, 1:14 PM
@Gearstation..good point
McLovin
McLovin - 7/16/2010, 3:40 PM
@ ecks - I could live with that one on film. Although I could do without the badge and would alter the design on the belt buckle.

@ NightBat - yeah, but there is so little of it. Just give it a slight update and add just a bit more gray and we're good.

ecksmanfan - 7/16/2010, 3:42 PM
@McLovin- You love the buckle!!!! Yeah, I agree though.
NightBat
NightBat - 7/16/2010, 5:41 PM
@McLovin..it could happen in the next installment, making the body parts grayER to simulate the old yellow oval as a target for the criminals to shoot at while keeping the mask, hands and feet darkest
