Marvel Adjusts its Movie Dates

Marvel Adjusts its Movie Dates

The surprise announcements keep coming from Marvel Studios! Late yesterday they inked deals with Mickey Rourke and Scarlett Johansson for Iron Man 2, and today they are switching around their movie release dates. The move kinda stinks as we were all looking forward to seeing a few of the mentioned films in 2010. But hey if it takes the studios an extra year to get it right then so be it.

This is all to further the continuous story arc culminating with The Avengers, now set for release on May 4, 2012. Marvel Studios also scoops Sony on Spider-Man 4's release date of May 6, 2011. Here's the official announcement:

New York, New York – March 12, 2009 – Paving the way for the production and release of its multi-character superhero film, THE AVENGERS, Marvel Entertainment, Inc. , announced today an adjusted release pipeline for its self-produced feature film properties that reflects the first time individual Super Hero characters and story arcs will be inter-woven and culminate in a multi-character motion picture. Separately, Marvel Studios confirmed today that Sony Pictures Entertainment will release SPIDER-MAN 4 on May 6, 2011. Additionally, Marvel Studios has revised the release dates for THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA as part of its release strategy for an uninterrupted road to THE AVENGERS, now debuting May 4, 2012.

A Marvel character-based film will now launch the summer box office season for three years in a row, from 2010 through 2012.

“This new schedule strongly sequences Marvel’s movie debut dates, big screen character introductions and momentum. It maximizes the visibility of our single character-focused films, leading to the highly anticipated release of the multi-character THE AVENGERS film in 2012,” said David Maisel, Chairman, Marvel Studios.

Sony Pictures’ and Marvel Studios’ SPIDER-MAN 4 is slated for May 6, 2011. To date, all three motion pictures in the phenomenally successful SPIDER-MAN franchise have generated nearly $2.5 billion worldwide theatrically.

Below is Marvel Studios’ 2010-2012 updated release schedule for its slate of self-produced and financed feature films:

Marvel Studios Feature Film Pipeline
IRON MAN 2: formerly May 7, 2010, now May 7, 2010
THOR: formerly July 16, 2010, now June 17, 2011
CAPTAIN AMERICA: formerly May 6, 2011, now July 22, 2011
THE AVENGERS: formerly July 15, 2011, now May 4, 2012

The release date for IRON MAN 2 remains unchanged.

I think it is a good choice... It all makes sense and I understand why they are doing it, but for Marvel movies, the wait will kill me... But all of these movies will be taken a little slower so they can ace everything with casting, storyline etc. After Iron Man 2 it is going to be a long wait for something else...but I do recall counting down for spider-man 3 at 452 days until I was at the midnight premiere!!!

Yeah I'm ok with it, it seems that marvel wants to get it right. Wich I applaud them taking their time and not trying to feed us some bullshit like Fox is going to do with the Wolvering Origins movie appearently.

I'm curious how this is going to effect some of the other movies that Marvel has on it's slate as well?
(ie. Dr Strange, Black Panther, Iron Fist, Ant-Man, etc.)

Supermike... "I will not be shock if (Supermike) wake up and see how stuipd it will be to do a (continue messaging on these treads) and just cancel it"

(See how I did that, I used your 3rd grade level grammatical errors, coupled with your stupid comment, and made a funny!)

LMFAO!!!

JAMESH & VERBICIDE-

You should know better than to think SUPERMIKE makes any sense. Anyone know how that poll turned out on whether or not to ban his dumb ass?

I think this is a great move, I knew there was no way they were going to complete Thor in schedule with the previous timeline. In fact, i'm happy they've made these adjustments!

"supermike" sounds like that nickname a whole town gives that fat guy that walks around with headphones and talks to himself.

This is probably good. they need as much time as possible to make The Avengers amazing. so if i have to wait another year to see the movie, no biggie. as long as they use that year to make it as good as possible

I dont like the fact that Thor and Captain America are going to be screened so close to each other. I think that each movie needs more space in between.

MisterNiceGuy - 3/12/2009, 6:14 PM
its harder for them cuz there universe is waaaaaay too big and it forces them to make stupid adjustments and put too much uneccassary crap in there movies.
DarkAvengers
DarkAvengers - 3/12/2009, 6:47 PM
And how is the Hulk supposed to be involved in all of this? I imagine he will pop up in one of the other movies. Seiously, its taking them forever to cast Thor and Captain America.
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 3/12/2009, 6:50 PM
Torque,, well MARVEL shouldn't add another UNIVERSE in the movies might be a start!!! I'll say it, and i'll say it again, anything ULTIMATE is crap and shouldn't touch the MARVEL MOVIES UNIVERSE!!! ; ) WATCH THE WATCHMEN!!! : D

Mattlask

Did you see the evil grin Hulk had in the end of the Inc Hulk movie? And remember Stark saying he's got the solution for Ross' problems?

There's a big GREEN chance that the Avengers villain would be Hulk. He wont necessarily be evil but maybe a misunderstood villain as how Hulk has been presented since the 70's.

I haven't seen a crazy Louise quote since her rant about Tobey McGuire and him being a Tiger and her hopes and dreams yadda yadda yadda...I don't know why I really remember that, but I do.

WOuldn't it be funny if THAT was actually Supermike's alter-ego? Ha! Just a thought...

On to the topic; I think it's good. I felt that the release dates were WAY to premature for putting together movies on this scale with this much tie-in material and getting things meshed so there aren't any obvious holes in their plot. Good move on their part for trying to keep the story cohesive and interesting and putting more time and effort into making a GOOD series of films of different franchises that all work in the same universe and do it well. So far so good, whether they all turn out as good as Hulk and Iron Man, they're golden.
