In 2012, both Marvel's The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises managed to hit $1 billion at the worldwide box office. While box office performance isn't all that important to some fans, it IS important to studio execs, and a big superhero movie reaching such a high figure pretty much guarantees that we will see them continue to grace the big screen for many years to come. So, which ones - if any! - will manage to do the same in 2013? Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel seem the most likely candidates, but it's always possible that something (take Skyfall for example) will surprise us! Which do you think is most likely to reach $1 billion? Here's your chance to decide...

I think most will do well, none will pass the billion, and the lone ranger and R.I.P.D are going to be the biggest flops....

Since when is the Hobbit as CBM?
JDUKE25
JDUKE25 - 3/27/2013, 3:06 PM
The Hobbit 2 is pretty much a guaranteed billion. That's my vote.

Man of Steel may get that or it may not, but it will get at least $750 million I'm thinking.

Iron Man 3, $650 million at least.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 3/27/2013, 3:09 PM
Iron Man 3 maybe? Iron Man has always been popular and Avengers made him even more popular. Man of Steel probably wont but if it is successful, the sequel most likely will.
JDUKE25
JDUKE25 - 3/27/2013, 3:09 PM
I don't see how some people think Iron Man 3 will reach a billion.

Iron Man: $585,174,222

Iron Man 2: $623,933,331

I get that it will definitely go up because of Avengers, but jump almost $400 million more than the other 2? Doubtful.

honestly none of them will hit 1billion, Hobbit probably will but its not a CBM, so it doesnt count, I think IM3 will hit $750-$800, man of steel $550-$600, lone ranger & RIPD are looking like flops

Man of Steel will have to to ally outperform to do 1 billion in it's first outing. The sequel more likely.

Ironman 3 is a fairly safe bet depending on it's reception.

Star trek into darkness may be a dark horse here but 1 billion? Tough...

MAN OF STEEL is the only film I can see potentially topping a billion worldwide, maybe START TREK and THE HOBBIT but I don't consider them comic book movies and really shouldn't be counted. IRON MAN 3 will be lucky to top $600 million IMO.

@JDUKE25...my vote, too. If Unexpected Journey did 1B than Desolation will, too.

@Killer Tomato...since....

Just from the trailers Star Trek into Darkness looks the best( based only on the trailer).

This just looks like a killer film..

If I had to guess I would say Star Trek, maybe, mmmmaybe Man of Steel if the movie is really good. I don't see Iron Man 3 taking the leap nor Wolverine. I think both those movies will be great, but I think we will start to see a little bit of Super Hero fatigue at the box office this year. I think overall the movies will be of much better quality, but I don't think the receipts will be there.

The hobbit will most likely do it, cant see any of the rest doing it, Iron man 3 will probably make around 800-850 million, cant see it doing 1 billion. Surprised the hunger games sequel aint on the list, that would be my next bet after the hobbit to make over a billion.

Not to fussed on the gross, just want to watch a good and entertaining film

The Hobbit is a bit of a wild card, I think a lot of casual fans were turned off by the first one, and to reach a billion you either need to rope the casual fans (mainly women), or the family audience.
StormLoganSummers
StormLoganSummers - 3/27/2013, 3:21 PM
The Hobbit: blah blah blah
Iron Man 3
ralfinader
ralfinader - 3/27/2013, 3:22 PM
Iron Man has the best chance, so soon after Avengers, it will probably bring in alot of family $'s.
OptimusPrimeTime
OptimusPrimeTime - 3/27/2013, 3:24 PM
The Hobbit, definitely.

The Hunger Games 2, maybe.

Man Of Steel, maybe.

Iron Man 3, no way in hell.

Unfortunately, although probably most deserved, Iron Man 3 will not hit 1B; it has too much competition in the month of May.

PaulRom
PaulRom - 3/27/2013, 3:27 PM
The Hobbit will almost definitely make a billion. Iron Man 3 will probably come short, but it'll be close. I'd be surprised if Man Of Steel or Thor make it past $600-650M worldwide.
graveyardtramp
graveyardtramp - 3/27/2013, 3:29 PM
A comic book movie should be a movie that is based on a comic book, not just a book or a movie or TV series that may have had a comic book adaptation of it produced somewhere along the line - there have been comic book bios of Abraham Lincoln published over the years, does that make LINCOLN a comic book movie? What about Will Smith's ALI biopic? That must be a comic book movie too - after all, remember that Superman Vs Muhammad Ali comic book from the 70s?
knighted
knighted - 3/27/2013, 3:31 PM
None. Ironman doesn't look as fun as avengers. Man of steel is going to have to erase Superman returns from people's mind with good word of mouth to be really successful. Startrek has some potential since the first was so good.

...idk it's really hard to say.
Why would there be a "superhero fatigue" at the BO??
Ocelot

@OptimusPrimeTime it will be derailed by star trek 2 and the silent juggernaut known as fast and furious 6.

The hobbit will reach 1 billion, Iron Man will be second and Man of Steel 3rd.

T:TDW, The Wolverine, Kick-Ass 2, Star Trek...all of them, will be lucky to reach 500 mill.
